Me and my Husband are cyclists.

Abe rides with me on my town bike around the neighborhood and down to the park ect.

The problem comes when we want to go out for a day ride along a nice trail ect. We want to take Abe because we stop at some lovely places along the way but its to fast/ long for him to run with.

So we were considering getting one of the kids trailers for the bike to put him in.

Like this.

We have tried him in one and he fits ect and he would get plenty of stops alone the way.

What do you think?
Good idea? bad idea?

Why not, if he's happy in there?

It won't get too hot in there if it's sunny will it? I guess it's pretty well ventilated?

Yeah its mesh at the back and the front so good air flow and we won't be taking him if its ever really hot out.

We were looking at the ones made for dogs but they are so expensive compared to the kids ones so my husband is just going to take out the kid straps and attach some ones for Abe. There is room to have his water bottle in there (like one of those ones for hamsters).

I can't see a problem with that, just make sure there isn't too much sunshine blazing onto him :)
as long as there's plenty of toilet-and-water breaks I'm sure he'd be rather happy riding along in that!

It could be worse, I've seen dogs in pushchairs before now  but are you sure it's too far for him to run? I know a local dog trainer who put a pedometer on a working collie and found it ran an average of 50 to 70 km (I think that works out at 30 -45 miles) on a working day :eek::eek:

Its not just that its to far although we are talking 60- 70 miles in a day(and that would be horrible for his joints) but its fast we are cycling on the tandem at 40 mph and on the road at times.

Yikes  never mind his joints, aren't you a little, ahem, saddle-sore after that?? And what about the poor person sitting on the back downwind of sweaty armpits :( Seems like you need a genetic mutant collie/greyhound/husky mix ;) I once clocked Oscar running at over 35mph (I was doing 35 in the car and he was gaining on me - on the farm drive not the road before anyone gets shocked :D) but he can only keep it up for a few hundred metres

No when you ride that far regularly your butt gets use to it.

No sweaty armpits when you have good clothing and your fit so you don't sweat to much.

I know abe can run fast by the bike because he mountain bikes with us but its not fair to make him go that fast for that long and the places we ride to are fantastic places for him to have a romp at so i don't want to leave him at home.

My ex OH and I once tried a tandem - apparently sitting on the back with your legs sticking out and shouting "Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!" isn't how it works

I've seen a few people with their dogs in a kiddy trailer - seem to love it, bet Abe will too! :D

Good luck with the trailer then :) I bet he'll love it

Please excuse my daftness it's been a long day and I've started on the wine already
