Can't see the poll on phone but yes, I started taking mine every day for a MONTH when there was that EHV outbreak a few years ago so I know what's normal even at different times of the day. I have it all on a sheet of paper tucked into their passports :)

TBH I don't really see the value in taking my healthy horses temperatures very often! They can vary quite significantly throughout the day/week/year so just work to the reference values combined with clinical signs. Ditto the other animals here!

Yes, I do take temperature if I feel they might not be quite right and always when one of mine colics. Firstly I can have information ready for the vet, also I have previously been told by them that if temperature is slightly lower or lower than normal when colicing, this can be a sign that they have been colicing for a while and to get extra rugs on to bring their temperature up to normal whilst waiting for vet to come.

Where can you get them from cheaply ? I looked on eBay and were over £10

tbf as a one off investment in your horse's care it's not a huge sum even at a tenner ;)

I have an ancient mercury style one rather than a digital one as would prefer not to have to think about batteries, but either way you don't need a horse-specific one provided it covers the correct temps (99-101 F/ 37.5 - 38.5 C)

If you aren't used to doing this stuff, print a handy guide your first aid box to remind you of the vital signs - e.g. http://www.bhs.org.uk/~/media/bhs/f...flets/5-normal-tpr-in-adult-horses.ashx?la=en

I fell it's quite important to know, as vets will obviously go within a normal range to see if a horse has a raised temperature, but often a horses temperature may be raised from what is normal to them.

It always reminds me of everytime I go for my hospital check or to the doctors. My natural body temperature is ridiculously low at 35.2. It's a hellish natural temperature and I am permanently freezing. As a result my body systems don't function properly. When I reach 36, it means I'm ill. When I had flu the other week, I made it to 36.9 and I felt like I was going to explode, yet that is still considered a normal temperature. I have notes on my hospital records as a result so that everyone is aware.

My boy's a 'hot bod' and he's the very top end of the normal range. I know that if he goes into the 38 degree territory there's something not right.

I too learnt of his personal 'normal temp' when there was Strangles on a yard i was on and his temp was taken at the same time every day for weeks.
