British horseracing is steeped in tradition, & in flat racing every owner & trainer dreams of producing an "Epsom Derby Winner" very few geese turn into swans in this industry but this race can only be entered by 3yr olds & that is possibly the main reason for starting them at 2yrs old...
When the fences were higher many of the loose horses would refuse at the next fence & would either run off the course via the shute for this purpose
or would be caught up & removed as soon as the other runners were clear of that section, either way most of the loose ones were quickly out of...
I can't see how this would be possible with all the other runners thundering
around the course, it would be too dangerous & would simply increase the carnage !
I totally agree with the comment above ... these recurring fatalities are caused by the crowding of way too many runners jostling for position.
The course & the jumps are no more dangerous than a grade 1 event course.

What I have gleaned from reading every single post is that sometimes the decision is clear cut, other times not so, & that sometimes even Vets can make a bad call.
As someone who has owned & loved cats, dogs, & horses as companion animals all my life, I have never hesitated to put their welfare...

I took on a rescue pony who was fear aggressive due to extreme abuse, he had zero training/handling apart from this in his first 7 years. He had already been returned from a previous adoption as dangerous & unhandleable.
