    Schooling Ex- racehorses- any tips?

Patience and consistency are the key. I'm 2 years into reschooling a 17:2 hh 13 yr old ex flat horse. Lunging in a Pessoa or side reins can help encourage them into the correct outline. I school in draw reins to encourage him to work over his back which will help build top line. Hill work...

Question for owners of TB Ex-racehorses

My ex racer was also in training for along time,(9 yrs, he's 12 now). He just loves being out, but not 24/7, he prefers to come in at night. It can be tricky to keep weight on them especially through the winter, but as the others have said good rugs, plenty of hay/hayage, and hard feeds, will...

    A sad question

This is such a dilema for you. When my beloved old horse was PTS it was just me and my dog who were with him ( plus the vet) we said our goodbyes and sat with him throughout. It had always been just the three of us when he was alive; so it was when he died. The YO made sure that all the...

I took my ex racer to a local show last Sunday, we entered the in hand ex racehorse class, not really expecting anything ;it was just a good opportunity to take him out to a non racing party. He was in training for 11 years, raced for 9 years and had over 50 starts. He's been with me now for 15...

    Sad beyond words

Roxanne, as horrid as the plight of these ex racehorses is; the live export of horses and ponies from the UK to satisfy the continental horse meat market happens, its a very lucrative market. The animals are only transported live because the continental housewife insists that the meat she buys...

Salisbury Plain - anyone near there ?

Yes it is open, but the riding is great ... but for safety reasons I wouldn't ride on the plain alone, always take at least one other rider and a mobile phone .People have been known to get lost, and heaven forbid you were to be thrown.
