    Rugging

Stables are concrete block and tile roof - much warmer than outside as the tack room bit has a sink and the tap rarely freezers there, thankfully!

Thank you - Shetland was in field today with snow settled on his back so well insulated

    Rugging

Thanks for reply. Yes stables are sheltered and all healthy. 12.2 has cushings managed with 1/2 pracend a day. Not really ridden much this time of year. My daughter and I are fair weather riders

    Rugging

Apologies for a rugging thread that has probably been done a million times 😊...... My three neddies (16hh ISH age 17, 12.2 pony age 23, 10.2 Shetland age 25-30ish) are all unclipped and unrugged. They are out in field from 7am-10pm with ad-lib large covered round hay bale and access to...

    hay still ok to use?

I opened a bale of wrapped hay (completely dry,, not like haylage) in around May time. I have used it over summer for haynets when travelling and for the chicken nest boxes! I have loads left. It smells ok although looks a little faded on the outside and the bits that have collapsed and its...

    stressing about rugging!!

Thank you all, really appreciate your advice. In the "old days" my TB just had a NZ rug - none of the different fill options - and he was fine. I'll leave them rug free - the ISH has the thinnest coat yet she gets really hot really quickly in a rug. Forgot to say that the 12.2 welsh has...

    stressing about rugging!!

My three are out day and night unrugged with grass and field shelters. The temperature is dropping to about 3 degrees tonight, down to 1 degree at the weekend. Ive just felt the base of their ears and armpits and all three of them are luke warm. I will stable overnight when it gets wetter but...

Stupidest things YOU'VE said or done?

Forgot my boots when going to get horse in from field on wet and windy day. So I put carrier bags over my shoes. Couldn't understand why I couldn't get near my horse who was always good to catch ☺️😳

To use travel boots or not??

I've been wondering the same. I travel pony without - he came in and with boots which I used initially but they always slipped down and he tripped and nearly fell with them! So I now travel without but he is barefoot. I'm about to start trailering my mare 1 mile down the road to avoid busy main...

    If I had gun..... sometimes!

One of my ponies is a pain to catch. He is in a fairly small paddock so I tie a long length of electric fence to a post near a corner and gradually herd him down the paddock until he is contained. But he is 12.2 and fairly quiet. Not sure I'd try it with a big exciteable horse in case they tried...

    pony screaming and stomping

I was in my bedroom yesterday and heard a terrible noise, which I thought was a dog in pain, followed by a loud thump. Opened the window and realised it was my mare screaming at my boy ponies in the field shelter next to her and then kicking the partition wall 😳. I think she's in...

    Haylage question

Thank you for the reply. There is no mould anywhere it just doesn't smell as nice - my fussy mare is still not keen. I may have to go back to soaking hay

    Haylage question

I had a bale of haylage from farmer a few weeks ago and it was lovely - quite light in colour and smelt lovely - my mare loved it! I can't remember if the wrapping had holes in it. I had another bale yesterday and it's a darker but still light gold colour but doesn't smell as sweet. There is no...

    Shetland Ponies and electric fencing.....

Would love to see that - clever pony. My shetland does seem very bright - I think it's because he's driven by his tummy!
