Chicken manure on pasture - how safe?

Thanks everyone. I did speak to my vet as well and they confirmed what you've all said - salmonella is a risk although all commercially farmed poultry is supposed to be vaccinated these days, and botulism occurs mainly in chicken manure from intensively reared farms as chicken carcasses don't...

Chicken manure on pasture - how safe?

I haven't been on for ages so apologies if there's been another thread on this recently... but does anyone know if it's safe to graze horses on land that's been recently spread with chicken manure? My landowner rents his grazing primarily to a tenant farmer who has just, with no warning...

    Access Question - Scotland

Not a clue - but interested in the answer, if there is one! Why not ask your council's Access Officer?

    Trotting on roads...

I used to do a lot of endurance training trotting on roads but when my old horse was diagnosed at age 14 with bilateral navicular the vets suggested one contributory factor might have been excessive concussion on roads. So my current horse only trots on roads in competition - we do a lot of walk...

Interesting debate in Country Living Mag - Horses ruin the countryside

Don't agree with the argument at all, but I'm particularly interested in the pasture thing, as my horses graze a field split 50:50 with cattle - and the half my boys are in is like a billiard table, short grass and hardly any weeds, whereas the half the cows are in is very rough, pocked with...

ok, SO MUCH worse than we thought

When my old Arab was diagnosed with navicular 6 years ago, the vet hospital recommended wedges. After about 6 months my farrier refused to keep using them as he said they were crushing the heels and hampering regrowth. So he's been in normal shoes with filed-down toes (thinned more than rolled)...

    synthetic saddle advice ??????

Another vote for Thorowgoods - I've had about 6 over the years, ranging from jumping to endurance, and have never had a problem with any of them. I started out with a narrow cutback pommel GP for my skinny high-withered TB and at the moment I have an extra-wide endurance saddle that fits my...

    Endurance Riders

I've been doing endurance for 13 years. My now retired horse took me to Gold series which is rides of 50miles (80kms) and upwards. My current horse is more injury-prone and we're a bit stuck at the 80k mark but hoping to progress. I personally don't do interval training, preferring to rely on...

    Can Thoroughbreds do endurance?????

I too had an ex-racer when I started endurance. He had pelvic trouble which precluded long distances but was superb up to 30kms - low heart rates, very comfortable, ground-covering ... just a bit tall for gates at 16.3! There are quite a few successful TB endurance horses up here.

    Hello from Scotland :)

Seeing all the Scots are coming out of the woodwork ...another hello from the Borders, representing two horses and one donkey.

I've just made a police report

So glad you and your saint of a horse are OK. I had a vaguely similar experience last year, riding my spooky Arab on a quiet back road near my home, narrow but with wide verges (thank God as it turned out). I could hear a vehicle coming fast towards me as I rode towards the brow of a hill, so I...

    show treka M / L

Another vote for the EquiTrek - I have the Show Treka M (it's my second Equi) and think they're great: easy to tow, horses travel well in them, good to manoeuvre, plenty storage space... My boy is 15.3 and fits the M easily - I would expect a 16.1 to be fine. Yes, there are plenty posts on here...

Strangles - also in Comp riders

If it were me, it would depend on how close the outbreak was to the event. A few weeks ago there was a strangles outbreak near Jedburgh - I was due to be at an endurance ride 6 miles away, which went ahead on veterinary advice. To avoid any cross-infection, the officiating vets didn't do the...

    Synthetic stirrup leathers????

I've used synthetic Thorowgoods on my T/good saddles, which are fine, but even better are the Wintec Webbers; because they work on a 'hook' system rather than a buckle there's only one thickness of strap between your leg and the saddle. Both are very hard-wearing and I would happily recommend...
