My first proper horse was 13, she was full of beans, I had her til she was 15. She's now 21 and still buzzy, from what I've been told! The loan horse I had before her was 15 and happily competed/hunted until she had to be retired due to illness at about 18.
At my old yard, which was also a RS, feed got stolen a lot. My mare had to have a lot of supplements and they would reguarly go missing.
She was a very highly strung arab and didn't like strangers, and I know it wasn't the fault of the kids as most of them didn't know any better, but they'd run...
I'd just wait a bit, but yeah you might find you need to shorten them permanently, but you'll adjust to it. I can't ride in long boots, I find it really hard.
I think I might feel differently if I was competing right now/my career prospect was in the field, as with your son, but I'm still in the mindset of wanting to work and being able to see my friends a few nights a week - something I don't see happening if I have to be up at 5.45 every day
