It is deep bacterial dermatitis and probably cellulitis as well. Topical antibiotics will help such as hibi scrub and flamazine but you will need to get a longer course of antibiotics from the vet and don't stop for atleast 48hrs after it looks completely better.
I've seen laminitis several times in horses/ponies that have recently moved yards, no other risk factors identified and reasonably young too. In two cases it was definatley down to stress which makes sense because stress results in increased circulating cortisol just the same as cushings...
At 18 years old thats a long time damage is going to have been accumulating! The problem is that fat is metabolically active producing adipokines that alter normal metabolism. This mare will definately be suffering with insulin resistance which causes damage to laminae, kidneys and liver (and...
Of course your welcome to do what you like but you need only spend a couple of minutes reading the data sheet for Fucidin to see for yourself it should never be put on open wounds - in fact your vet should not have prescribed it all, it is not lisenced for use in the horse and more suitable...
Fucidin h contains a steroid and is designed to treat allergic dermititis NOT wounds in which it will increase the risk of infection. I wouldn't put this on it again, ask vet if they will let you have a course of antibiotics and keep it clean with dilute antiseptic like iodine/hibiscrub.
Usually he replies within 1 week but he does travel alot so sometimes takes 2 but never longer. He has definately been around in the last 2 months - your vets are having you on I'm afraid. If you have sent photo's and not paid for a consultation this may be the problem. Liverpool have recently...
I would try Panacur 5 day before any thing else but be prepared that this may not work. If not then triple dose of pyrantal (strongid P or pyratape P or Exodus). Stubborn cases are best managed with the addition of ivermectin applied to then anus in a mixture with propylene glycol every day for...
Hi BOF, sorry I havn't read your previous post so don't know how long you have had this little guy. First of all if he is BCS 1 he could be worse and I think you have a good chance. It is very important that starved horses do not over eat in the first 10 days, in fact feed should be severly...
Did every horse have gutteral pouch endoscopy done to rule out carrier status? Including the ones without symptoms because it sounds like you have a carrier hiding somewhere.
Just thought of another condition that presents in weird ways - aortoiliac thrombosis, blood clots in the vessels to hind limbs. Can be ruled out by rectal scan.
It sounds to me like one of three things;
Suspensory desmitis - has he had the specific herve block for this?
A nuerological problem (Get his sacral area scanned per rectum). Could try him on a nuerological analgeasic like gabapentin or cheaper steroids.
A muscle problem - can present in...
By far the most common reason for horses not liking their ears touched is because they have been ear twitched in the past. If you are patient and gentle he may learn to accept you touching then but I would leave trimming any wax off until he is super confident because it may be pushing him to...
