Op it is totally out of character for me too - I have actually never sold a horse - I keep them till the end. The way I looked at it - it's best for my horse. He is only 6, he could have a fab life with someone who can give him the time, or he can stay with me and be squeezed in. I'd be doing...
This is me right now so I really feel for you. I was only out of horse ownership for 3 years, I lost my 2 boys about a month before I had my second child but I kept my hand in, riding friends horses and having lessons. My children are both under 5. Last year we decided that i could buy a new one...
This is a lovely post - well done on coming so far. Very inspiring for a nervous wreck like me whom has bought a new horse who is spookier than originally thought! X
Get someone to ride your horse for a couple of weeks. It might be costly but in my opinion it's worth it (my poor hubby didn't realise quite how bankrupt we were going to become ) She could be your perfect horse but just needs time to settle in and understand her...
Ooh this is me a couple of weeks ago! I posted that I had bought a super safe totally chilled out horse as my nerves were in tatters and i was close to giving up, and got him home and he wasn't so super safe anymore. I was ready to sell him on as he wasnt as described and i was in tears daily. I...
This just about hits the nail on the head in my mind. He has come from that precise set up - small yard, able to watch everything that goes on etc. I don't think there is anything like that local to me though otherwise I would move instantly so will he eventually settle if I cant move do you...
Thank you, that's a good point. And I am desperately trying not to let it get me down but I have really got myself into a state about it :( I'm interested in the magnesium option so will look into that. x
He is currently out 24/7 and I go up morning and evening to check him, water, poo pick etc. I go up mornings usually to ride, although sometimes I ride in the evening. Ultimately though he is never without food, water or horses around. I would love to be on part livery and I am working on hubby x
Thank you, its just so disappointing that I spent a year looking for a horse I felt truly safe on and then find it and this happens. I can see I need to become more firm.
That's a fair point - he may never have been fit enough to do the hunting in the first place. Although I am not working him particularly hard, in our schooling sessions I only do about 20 mins max as I am asking him to work properly and he tires quickly. He doesn't look much different to look...
That's reassuring to hear that yours is coming right eventually. Mine couldn't be bothered to jump a gate without being chased over it :) (and that's what I loved about him and want back - the 'cant be bothered to misbehave') x
Thank you. I need to put my brave pants on and get stricter. I know I have been playing nicey nicey with him as he was new and I wanted him to get to know me but I must admit he does seem to respond well when I am firm with him.
I have had a new saddle fitted to him, I have had the farrier...
Thank you everyone, I really appreciate you taking the time to post. So, he lived in a small private yard with just 2 other mares. They were in individual paddocks. He hunted once or twice a week through last winter then did some schooling and hacking between april and june when I bought him...
I wonder if I could have any advice please as my nerves are taking over and I struggling to be rational about my situation :(
I spent a very traumatic year looking for a new horse and just as I was about to give up, I found a lovely quiet (almost horizontal he was so laid back)...
