11 degrees

I was starting to really worry about my old girl as I wouldn't normally rug this time of year unless clipped, but she came in shivering even with a 50g no neck on yesterday evening and then wasn't warm in her 100g stable rug this morning.
She's out in a 50g with a neck today and I will put her in her 200g stable rug tonight.
I'll stop worrying about her now because it sounds like most of us are doing the same!

Yay, finally my two fatties might start losing some weight! Old fella grows a really thick coat but will wear a mediumweight a bit later on. We still have 13 degrees down to 5 at night. The other two will be naked all winter, they have stables to shelter in if they want.

My cob was unrugged till last night - as he's on restricted turnout after injury, and the ground is slippy I don;t want him doing the beep test to get warm once soaked! He's got a big bedded - down shelter but now has 0g high neck PE rug on. It will come off tomorrow if the monsoon stops! He will need clipping in a week or 2 though if his rehab continues, he is getting a winter coat (his blue roan Autumn one disappeared overnight and the red roan winter one is coming through!)

BB has a 200 on now! And he will be toasty ☺️

I’m not one to worry what others do and each horse is different! Just out of interest, what rug will he have on when it’s minus temps in the depth of winter?

My last horse with muscle issues would of been clipped in a 200g by now though, he really felt the cold. My mares fully clipped as was sweating when worked and in a light weight turnout with a neck and warm. It’s still no less than 9 degrees here. If it gets any cooler I’ll put the 100g on and 200g when it’s really cold.

I find if theuy can stay dry they are happy

It’s cold!!

Unclipped oldie is in a no fill turnout in the day and a fleece overnight. I’ll see how he feels coming in today but he might need a 100g liner on if it stays this cold.

Brr.

Faran has a 0g on. Wind and rain was quite bad up here and it’s to be colder at night and he’s still living out. I’m trying to limit the amount of fluff he grows as he’s finally got serious about blowing his summer coat. Don’t really want to have to clip him as I won’t be competing this winter I don’t think. He does sweat quite a bit however so will play it by ear.

He will have a 450 on, and if it minus temperature which it quite often is here he will have a 200 and a 450. Its been 3 last night here and only 10 today so its time, if its over 14 and sunny that’s different but its damp ?

Fully clipped (legs and all) is in a 50g, would be in a 0 fill, but they all seem to leak so the 50g is the lightest most reliable in the rain. Youngster is naked and will remain so all winter.
The heaviest rug I have is 200g so I can't imagine using it right now. Only went up to 100g last winter and he was fully clipped. I live in the North but not on top of a hill so wind chill is not really a factor. They are still out at nights and will hopefully be out for another couple of weeks at least.

He looks brilliant! My in work, clipped ones will have similar weights on when it gets properly cold, last winter when it was around -7 during the day my big mare had 250g outer rug and 250g under rug on. Overnight at -10 she had a 250g underrug and a 300g top rug. She was hunting fit and fully clipped with legs off, I do think they start to feel the cold when they're fit like that.

Gosh your brave starting a thread like this ?

I'm West Coast Scotland and its bloody cold, not sure how I will survive the winter. Just 2 wee shetties for me to worry about these days, but if my old boy was about he'd probably be in 200g today as well.

I never understand how people know what weight rugs they're using! I have a turnout with no lining, a middle-ish weight one, and a slightly heavier one with a neck cover. I always feel confused when people start going on about 100g and 200g because I have no idea how that relates to my "middle-ish" weight one! Anyway, my 29 year old Arab is currently wearing her "middle-ish" weight one, and my Welsh is naked, but that will be him all winter.

It is probably a 200-300 then if its a middle, 450 is a big heavy rug to throw over and the 50-100 is slightly puffy but light ?
