3.5t for £10k - is it even possible?

There’s a Renault 3.5T box on “Horses and ponies for sale in Cumbria” for £10K

Thanks Sammy! I did look at them previously but it looks like they only do van conversions, which I'd ideally like to avoid as I'm just not sure they've got enough clearance for my boy.

I travel my 16.2hh warmblood in mine. Weight wise i could not take another horse, but size wise he is fine in it :)

I built this for £8k including buying the base van

Wow PaddyMonty , that is amazing ! I'd never have thought you could do such a fantastic transformation for that and kind of budget . Beautiful box .

Yes I have one for sale for 8500, 54 plate Vauxhall movano, it is sold subject to collection but I can let you know if it doesn't sell!

Thanks guys! Feeling more hopeful now :)

OH and I are still exploring the DIY approach, although finding a suitable base van which doesn't blow the budget is proving trickier than expected. PaddyMonty has given us a lot of food for thought though (will reply to your super helpful PM when I have more than a few moments free).

Will also follow up with Polly and see what she can suggest.

Will go have a look now

Wine AFTER welding, I hope!

Of course!

exciting times.
I have shown my OH PM's posts in the past and he was quite receptive too... just have to get all the other projects finished (! :D) then hopefully he will get round to building me a box before mine rusts away :p You've been a good example, PaddyMonty!

I bought mine for 9k I think! Years ago. It's R reg so old but at the time all we could find. There seemed to be a big jump from under £10,000 to over.
Like I say it's elderly but has fairly little use, actually not been used all winter except for a few furniture buying trips but still starts like clockwork.
They are out there!

Now trying to convince OH we should upgrade and make our own ;)
Paddymonty can I ask did you reinforce the bulkhead and how is this done?

Haha I fear this thread may lead to a lot of OH's being badgered to build a box!

I know what you mean about the jump between prices though, I seem to be able to find a fair few around the £5k mark and plenty around £15K but very few at the budget I have.

Yes there are now loads of 'look what P+M did for his wife, he is so much nicer and must love her lots and lots' ;)

FF I think there are more coming in at that price range than there used to be just because of the amount of time they have now been popular but the ones that are don't hang around very long because there are a lot of people that want something nicer than a 5k but can't stretch to the 15-20k mark.

Agree. We went to a dealer to have a look. Everything was £14,000 upwards. We just felt we couldn't justify this much. He then showed us our little old weird coloured lorry parked away dusty behind a million others!
I'm guessing around 10k is the most popular budget!
On the plus side op if you look after it you won't loose a lot of money unlike cars, they do seem to hold their value.

Yep- have been told mine would get 10-11k if I sell it privately. It's a bit of a pain cruising the websites for second hand ones but horsebox builders might have some stock in. I'm likely to part exchange mine for a new build, and assume the company will sell it on pretty quick.

Looks can be deceptive.
Prior to building Timmy half my life was spent driving OH or daughter to dressage comps, training sessions and anywhere else either of them wanted to go. OH didn't really like driving our 7.5t. Agreement was reached that if she had a 3.5t I wouldn't be required. Much searching convinced me there was a lot of rubbish around in the 3.5t market. Those that were OK were silly expensive and all had areas we didn't like.
Thus I built one to our own design. Happy OH and daughter and lots more spare time for me :)

We are planning to get a box this spring - anyone used or know about Three Counties Horseboxes? They said they can do a reasonable lorry for £10,000.

Mine was a three counties van conversion, old but serviceable, the conversion was good and solid, van underneath was starting to get past it's sell by date. I Think they are all conversions though they do different heights.

They were also very helpful as my seller couldn't manage the ramp as it stood (when it was built the person buying it opted for budget no springs etc) they quoted her for the work and it went straight to them after selling as it was on her way home :).

I went to their workshop and had a good look at some that had been finished and others in construction, I thought they looked like a good option if I hadn't been able to find a coachbuilt one. Very flexible on the design, well thought out, good attention to safety.
