A completely ridiculous question about sponges....

For washing the horse i have a man washer and a car sponge.
For his eyes and bum i have 2 cheap baby sponges in different colours.
For tack i have a specialist sponge that came free with the saddle soap

I wouldn't put anything reusable near my horses' eyes. It doesn't matter how often you clean it or how, it's kept in a stable yard, it's going to be full of germs.

As for sponges, Poundland everytime. Reminds me, I need some!

All these answers are making me realise how rarely I wash my horse:eek:

Don't start me! Potentially harmful modern fad as far as I'm concerned. They're supposed to have grease in their coats, not keep having it washed out. In forty years I've never washed a whole horse with shampoo.

.

Um - I didn't even realise there was such a thing as "equestrian" sponges - shows what a cheapskate I am...

I do use baby wipes for crusty eyes but not very often. Anything else gets a cheap sponge, an old tea cloth or, my secret weapon, one of those shower "scrunchie" type things which is ace for getting scabs off his legs and any particularly grungy bits of stable stain clean.

However, given that I probably own the greasiest horse in the world, we wouldn't win prizes for washing off.

I have washed mine twice. Part washed maybe 4 times.
That's fairly impressive:D How long have you had him?

Glad it's not just me then

If the weather is suitable I do try to bath before clipping. it's better for the blades and a nicer experience for me ;)

Have to do plenty of white leg washing though!

Whether it be sponges, buckets, shovels, trugs NEVER buy them from Tack/Equestrian shops when there is an alternative place to buy from. Use Pound shops, supermarkets, builders suppliers & you will normally get better quality at a cheaper price. Trugs are much cheaper & of better quality at builders merchants. brooms are cheaper there as well. As soon as something is labelled equine the price goes up!

Please consider ditching the baby wipes and cotton wool pads they are bad for the environment.

I keep cotton wool for medical purposes only, if there's no infection or anything then a sponge will do.

I buy car wash or dishwashing sponges they do fine. Plus some microfibre cloths.

I’ll do that when people stop having children and in addition using disposable nappies.

I bought some big squares of thick sponge to re cover 2 stools. I kept all the off cuts and have a big bag of weird shaped sponges of all sizes. Basically a life time supply, because I rarely clean tack or wash horse - Only really when he's got very sweaty after work.

Sadly my mare lies in poo, in particular she lies with her face in poo. Eyes, ears, cheeks covered in poo. It would take a heck of a lot of disposable pads etc to wash her face every day. The sponge has been fine so far. I don't go into it, only the outer part, above and round.

With a brown horse I don't wash. With a white horse who lies in poo, I do.

A man washer? The mind boggles!:D

What a strange attitude. Haven't you heard the phrase, "Be the change you want to see in the world"?

I use biodegradable sponges for the horses - they're lovely and soft, or Hands On gloves (great for working it in to manes and tails for my sweet itch mare). Found them in Morrison's when buying for OH. We don't do much by way of bathing - if I want to have a good scrub, I use a grooming brush to lather it up and clean stubborn stains. In the summer I most often just put a little medicated shampoo in a bucket, add water and wet groom the horse to remove sweat after riding, using either the brush or the sponge.
For tack I use downgraded kitchen sponges for stubborn grease and cloths for regular wiping clean. The latter go into the machine.

It’s a practical attitude that basically people only want to give up what they find easy. I don’t have kids so I am the change I want to see - less people to drain resources from the world.

Makes a couple of packets of wipes a year used to prevent transferring bacteria to sensitive eyes pale into comparison.

People wash sponges?
is that a thing?

I assumed mine get washed when I use them... maybe I need to up my hygiene.

tbf they don’t look manky and have never caused a problem. Tend to use jumbo car sponges and they last quite well

They really do. They are so shiny.
In the 5 years that I've had the beast he's gone from dappled to white. Luckily it's a fleabitten white so dirt can easily be mistaken for fleabites:D

I am praying Ludo stays a bit blotchy like he is now, then I can pretend the poo stains are just his normal colour 😂
