Why on earth would you use a plastic bag to get your horse over a jump?!?

I actually don't think having plastic bag strips on a whip is necessarily a bad idea

I might try that technique, see if my fat arse of a pony will start moving in the menege

He is so bombproof he will probs just look at it and laugh

I dont like the whole jumping both horses over the same jump at the same time etc.

ah these would be the 2 that I think on every vid I have seen they have had carrier bags attached to whips.

It has been suggested to me for frank (in walk!!) by a couple of people but I haven't used as we have enough trouble with placcy bags thanks

Was just going to say, sounds as if she was trying to "desensitise," the pony and she prefers it to "whack, whack, whacking." But then the pony looks quite forward going to some extent - and he is in a gag?

The ponies looked much loved in great condition, well-trained and the kids were great little riders and were having a fun time - I'm sorry I can't see why you have a problem with this?

Haven't looked at the video, but if a plastic bag came within 2 feet (amend that to 6 inches) of my mare, she would lose the plot for several hours!

Believe you me that I have tried with that plastic bag for many, many years - carrots on it, apples in it etc., all to no avail.

A big NAH to plastic bags, in any shape or form......and my mare will endorse that!

TBH guys I think there are much worse things happen. I'd be more concerned about the ground on their loose jumping strip thingy that looks a bit horrid.. but ponies are tough and they don't look too concerned by it all. I'm sure they'll cope!

nope, apparently sainsburys all the way,

*wonders if libbys do green bridles to go with Asda bags* Frank would look ok in green!

Wow. Another example of "look at how wild my horse is!" to make themselves feel good.

What's the bet that they gallop that same stretch on every hack and usually let it just go once they get through the gate?

oh FGS what an assumption!

All this thread demonstrates is that some people get off on belittling others and obviously have way too much time on their hands!

If they are rattling a bag instead of hitting their pony with a stick, I don't have a problem with it. Not sure about chasing them about with it, but I've seen much worse.

I would agree with this too. It seems that fewer kids are able to have proper fun with their ponies these days - I remember riding and jumping silly things bareback, and whizzing round fields with no reins. You can learn so much doing this, good balance etc. It comes up in H&H every so often that PCs and riding schools can't do this stuff any more because of the insurance implications so it's a worry that kids become too risk averse... which isn't a good way to learn to ride well.

OK, it's not how I would ride now but the ponies look well and seem to have some self preservation. Most ponies will tell you to get stuffed when they've had enough. I'm not convinced by the plastic bag

but the pony seems pretty wise to it.

I was their age not too long ago, and if my aunt had seen me and my cousin behave like that around the ponies we would have been sent to hell!

No, they aren't doing anything overly dangerous, but the first vid esp. is ridiculous behaviour.

Ditto that - I was thinking the exact same thing. I think sometimes people need to remember that not all horses are sensitive to these things. I think Murph would probably try to eat the plastic bag - he thinks they have food in.

I agree

I have watched quite a few of their vidoe's and they canter on hard stony tracks and roads, seem to take great pleasure at making a pony rear and are constantly waving plastic bags at them to get them to jump big fences.

Yes they are pretty good riders and yes the ponies look well cared for but that's not really the point.

At horse sales near me plastic bags on sticks have been banned as they terrified the ponies so much

Well, I thought the ponies looked super and the girls were really good riders who were having so much fun!
There are a lot of really sour critical people on here. I honestly could see no harm at all in the video, as it had obviously been well edited and wasn't in 'real time'.
Lighten up!
