A very hard decision ahead

Re the sedative: I double dosed Ginny with Domosedan and she was utterly oblivious at the end. I sedated her in the stable with Amber nearby and once she was drowsy I led her to the arena where she was actually PTS. She was a needle shy and stressy pony but once the gel started working she was totally relaxed with everything and it was very peaceful. The gel does last several hours too so there is no rush if the other horse will be being loaded that same morning. Thinking of you at this horrible, horrible time.

Big hugs OP. I’ve had to make this decision many times and it never really gets any easier. I generally bring all my horses in and then when the vet arrives, take the one being PTS out to the field to do it there. I take a pack of polos out and they have a fuss and some sweets and then we set everything up. A big whack of sedation and they don’t know what planet they are on, let alone anything else.
I don’t let my other horses see the body or anything, but they just seem to know what’s happened and are always a little quiet for the rest of the day but generally don’t shout or make a fuss as they seem know their friend has gone.
They do just seem to get on with it afterwards.

The call was made last night, hardest call of my life and I broke down after and cried the rest of the evening. Ruby is being PTS Thursday at 9.30.

Oh Lauren I'm so sorry! This is a horrible time for you, but you are doing the most selfless thing you can for Ruby. Keep that in mind over the next few days.

Hugs xxxxxxxxx

Honestly you have been the best owner for this mare, it's easy to know what the right decision is logically sometimes but that doesn't mean it still isn't a tough decision to make.

the time before thursday will be the worst for you but you can spoil her for a few days and remember you are doing this for her even though it will be very difficult for you. sounds like ambers echo has the solution for you as well....big hugs for you...

Sorry your having to go through this it's the one bloody awful thing about having a horse, but I think your making the right decision and putting Ruby first.

The last thing you need is other people making it more difficult for you, she is being rather selfish most horses don't react at all I have had to have one of my own pts at home, with 3 other horses very nearby 2 in the adjoining field and the other in a stable with the top door shut as he was on box rest, they were all absolutely fine afterwards maybe you could ask her your vet to speak to her about it.
