I was 5’9 on a 14.2hh…. We looked fine! Next one will be 15.2hh, I don’t want to go much bigger, if I was a few inches shorter I would stay on ponies forever.

I'm 5'6 and my pony is 14.2. she's really broad so taller people don't look odd on her.

The saddle is so often the limiting factor, make sure the back length can take a saddle that can also take you!

Very very true. My Connie took 6ft rugs so had plenty of room for a 17inch saddle which really helped. It’s very important as a taller person to make sure you are sitting in the middle of the saddle, not pushed to the back of the saddle over the loins. I always get on better with straight cut saddles and longer stirrups on smaller ponies.

Sadly rug size isn't always an indicator of ribcage length, so many ponies are being bred with massive fronts, and back ends, that there's little left in between! In hand Welsh breeding is the worst, you have a curved, short, dropped back, curved trees are all wrong for these shapes so you need a super short, curved panel instead but still must keep the rider in the right place, as you say. and that's not always possible.

It makes me cringe to see small pony having massive saddle that takes up most of their back just so there rider can have a pony. This isn’t a dig at anyone but I do think some people do take it to far.
