Depends on the situation really. I can't stand people hitting their horses for refusing to jump or if their horse is truely scared to pass anything then I'd consider it cruel.

But if the horse is just being down right dangerous and acting the maggot then a short, sharp reminder is needed rather then deading their sides by kicking. As long as it's not endless whacking then you cross the line into what I'd call cruel.

yes i agree with this but the non horsey dog walkers did not understand that this is how it is.

Me too!!!!! I have thought that loads of times; especially now; totally agree with what she has said.

Well only just found this thread and from what Heidi says, yes she was probably justified in smacking the horse twice in a controlled manner.

A smack if the horse is misbeahving is fine heid, I would have done the same

The difference with you Mis Elz of multiple personalities is thtat you stated your horse looked like an RSPCA case, you repeatedly beat her and left weals on her cos you hit her so hard,

whilst we are on the subject still, may i ask - again - why my situation was considered so very differently? as i have already highlighted the similarities...

Yes it's because you wrote this: "my horse looks like an RSPCA case" as a thread title at 10:28 in the morning. You then went on to say "thought we'd go for a nice long hack yesterday" then we got a lot of burble about what happened and why she misbehaved and what you did about it but then you finished up "her backside is now streaked with raised stick-marks; bloody mare, it was her fault, but i feel so guilty!!!!" which given the hours of daylight and the timing of your post must mean that some 14 hours AT LEAST after the incident your mare still had raised weals.

With this OP I agree, I too would have taken a stick and given the horse a couple of whacks and have done so in the past. IMHO hazel does the best job, with a switch of leaves left on the end to make more noise!

As I said to you at the time of your post though, there is a deal of difference between discipline and leaving marks still visible 14 hours later and if a couple of whacks don't work then you need to find another way round the problem.

oh gosh we have some real pedants on this forum, don't we! The marks on my horse's bum - which, may i take the time to add, were not 'bloody' nor, in fact 'welts/weals' as so many people implied at the time - had vamooshed by the time i went out to see her at about midday on the day that i posted (she was living out in the field at the time.....oops, is that cruel too? my bad) Oh dear, I'm sorry if a mixup between the past and present tense had you all fooled - my bad again!
grin.gif
the fact that the 'marks' had disappeared then shows, to me, that they had probably gone down within an hour of the 'incident.' now, try as I may to have explained this situation at the time, no-one would listen. Everyone was far too preoccupied with branding me a Horse Beater, on the basis of my first post which - I will admit - was written during a period of reflection when I was seriously peed off at having been forced to take the action i did! who actually enjoys hitting their horse? not me......
So, I have realised, the difference in the situation is this: some people on this forum are listened to, others are not. Some are given a chance to explain themselves, even when they have cocked up in an initial description...and some are not. Some people get the luck of the draw, in that at the time they post, the 'fluffy bunny huggers' (not my words, I am quoting!) have all packed up and gone to bed...others get the full backlash of everyone's bad day. Some people are just liked by others, full stop. And others are not.

Phew! It's taken a while, but I've finally got this straight!

Oh my God, are we still revisiting this one? Miz-thingy, why are you still so bothered about it? I say stupid things on the forum all the time, people slap me down for it and by the next day, its mostly forgotten.

I understand that you feel a bit hurt by the reaction you got at the time, but why do you keep going on aobut it? Are you honestly expecting that the people who gave you a hard time then are suddenly all going to recant and apologise to you? I just think its terribly unhealthy to obsess over one very minor issue (and something on an internet forum at that) to this extent. Maybe you should simply move on and start posting about the cool things you do with your horse or something.

Sweety - the bits in between the "quote" marks are YOUR words, that's what YOU wrote, look I've put it in bold so that you can see it more clearly now. I'm sorry if you want to change what you said or have it interpreted differently now but that IS what you put at the time! You know, as you're fond of writing, you could have said "when I got back from my ride I felt awful because the marks were still visible, I'll be checking very carefully when I next see her" - but no, you had to go for the dramatic effect.

Now if you were inaccurate / misleading in your deliberately inflammatory post then that's fine - but don't get all excited when people take you at your word!

Oh and if you want people to stop talking about it then you really do need to stop bringing it up and referring to it all the time- getting rid of the childish comment in your sig might help as well.

Oh, silly me.....
crazy.gif

I am fully aware that they were my words, but what I was trying to say to you is that at the time (ie IN THE OTHER THREAD) I was trying to explain what had happened, and everyone took my first heat-of-the-moment comments as gospel. ah well, im not going to bother going over it any more. I apologise if another person brought up a similar issue, and I wished to respond....

oh and BTW, my siggie is not 'childish' - it is actually representative of exactly what people on here think of me. Whats that...'it isnt', you say? I'll think you'll find it is....look at the countless number of people who jump on me at any available opportunity with a 'whip' jibe. Christ, even when I'm not here they go on about it in separate threads.....now call me immature if you like, but to me, it seems that its people on here who are obsessed, not me. I've tried apologising - several times on here - for annoying/misleading people, and they've chucked it back in my face. So i guess i will just have to continue pi55ing people off - its what im good at!

Whoever I am, I think you should forget about the whipping your horse thingie, and move on. I don't get why you keep bringing it up, when you seem to be upset about it.
Everyone makes mistakes with horse training...that's how we learn and move on...well most of us

I'd be happy to, S, really i would. I have no shame over what I did; I was gutted at the time that I had marked her, but even a simple schooling whip marks her, she is so sensitive. I think what I was upset about at the time was that I had had to get so tough with her, when we had been having such a lovely ride! That was my reason for posting it - not because I wanted a debate on whips/sticks/beating. But all of a sudden it blew up into a 'you're cruel' post.....and that was that. I really am not upset about it, and would take the same action again, should it happen in the future - however since the incident I have had no such troubles, and I hope that it stays that way!
It isnt me who brings it up all the time - Heidiboo seems to have had an identical experience, and as I was on the forum at the time, i couldnt really not post! What upsets me is that other people seem to have issues with moving on, even when they are telling me that I am immature and need to move on, etc. Look at Cahill's thread yesterday - snide, sarcastic, hurtful and unneccessary. Posts - and people - like this are the reason i keep getting on the defensive!

If I may say, MizElz, you seem to find problems and bad feeling where none exists.

You got very upset with me, to the point of sending me a PM...now, I never commented on the horse beating thing...and if you read my posts...I do use a whip and smack as and when necessary (but I use a whip with a leather flap so it won't 'cut' them or mark them).
I still think you're the Tranterer...and you're welcome to think that I'm the Devil himself if it rocks your boat

Peace?

PS Why does the top say 'deleted' ? I'm not too good at this posting malarkey yet...need another couple of thousand practices...

To OP: No you did the right thing - I wouldn't worry.

Jesus how long can we keep talking about the same post over and over. I for one find it highly boring and tedious and I cant believe all the sensible people are being goaded (sp) into replying to MisElz.
