I think what makes the poster feel annoyed, and myself, is the comment regarding if she can afford it. My comment always was, and always will be that no one really has the right to presume someone cannot afford their lifestyle. Parachute i am lead to believe you are merely 17 years old? Not really of an age to discuss financial stability yet ;).

Oh for Christ sake,
I asked if she was financially stable, I did not list of the costs and prices of keeping donkeys. I don't know how much they cost or what they need, i've never owned a donkey.
No, it's not really an age to discuss financial stability yet but I just did. Clearly you don't agree with my post so shall we leave it there or are you intent on dragging this on?

I take offense to this... 17 year olds are not all the same, please do not tar us under the same brush :) I know parachute she is far from a child and has showed maturity on here in the past !

Thank you so much!!

Donkeys are not good on their own, it distresses them a lot.

I'd geld the jack and then they can be happy all together. Otherwise, leave the boys together and find a suitable companion for the filly.

I would put the gelding and stallion together with the filly alongside but a good gap seperating them lined with electric fencing :)

Great advice from littleblackmule.

Donks should never be separated from bonded sets. Should imagine you know the dangers.

Could find a friend for filly, let them bond together and keep two bonded pairs.

Would recommend calling the donkey sanctuary for advice. Really nice people and know everything about donkeys, should imagine will tell you exactly how to handle this delicate situation!

ReadySaltedPeanuts still consider a mate for the filly, just being able to see other donkeys is not really sufficient. Even a goat or something would do.

Plus when the filly starts coming into season electric fence will not keep the stallion away!!

It's tricky to give advice without knowing your set-up OP, as I imagine the stallion would be more content away from sight and smell of the filly when she is in season. Pop him with the gelding yes but I'm not sure that having them right next to the filly is a good idea. Electric tape would maybe hold him in but he will be stressed if he can see her but cannot reach her when he knows she's in season. If that makes sense?! Of course you will need a companion for your filly too.

Where I used to work we would turn the stallions out at night with their companions, the rest of the horses went out during the day so there was less stress and clashes all round. I don't know if you have access to stabling? But that might be an idea.

Please please please phone the real experts at the Donkey Sanctuary. Just a phone call. They will give you real useful advice with support.
Their welfare officers ( sound scary but really not) give free advice and are LOVELY.

Thankyou all for your replies :) :)

I completely agree, but a 17 year olds outlook might and can be different to someone older who has been around the block a few times. :)

Unfortunately there was a sly dig made by her at the original poster and it undermined her mature position.

Rightyo :)

Im backing out of this...

O_C, do look again at the OP's previous thread and I'm sure you will understand. It was actually the OP that brought up the income issue herself and she did indeed ask for advice about whether or not she should acquire a 'free' (entire) pony to live with the donkeys. In the end she decided against it because one poster asked if she'd still have been interested in the pony if it hadn't been free. It really isn't about people making presumptions about whether people can afford something or not. I myself asked why money had been mentioned in that thread if, as it transpired, money was apparently not an issue at all.

I never brought up an income issue, I simply stated a rough 'value' of my income to get peoples idea on getting that specific yearling.

Well this escalated quickly..
Even though i'm most probably the main 'issue' to this lovely argument, I am offering popcorn to anybody who is watching this and who's stomach is rumbling :D

I read the OP's original thread, and whilst i do not personally agree with it, I do feel the OP was rather backed into the corner and all moral highground was lost with playschool type banter and giggles. Sorry it did not impress me. I hope the OP takes the good advise that did arise, but i personally cannot wait until schools are back in session.

hmm call me narrow minded but you have never commented on anything no past posts and jump on here to OPS defense....

-walks away twiddling thumbs-

You seem very quick to presume tessybear. I have commented on past threads if you note my old comments.

I guess i am ;) I have been wrong before just a niggling feeling i have  Like i said i will leave you all to it though im off to do childish things being a meer child ;)

Right. In your first post on the other thread you said:
'At the moment I earn around £350 a month, this is because of college, and when I leave I'm aiming to gain another job..'

Now in my book, that is a reference to income, and the fact that this has been made implies that it is something to be considered by anyone wishing to reply to your request for 'advice'.
If money was no object (which is how it appeared later on) then I'm not sure why the £350 was mentioned.

I just got the feeling that the advice you really wanted was to get the pony and worry about it in 2-3 years time, in spite of the fact that you wanted people to 'talk you out of it' - which they did.

Oh hey TB, let's go get some wollypops :D
I too, am now going to go be a 'meer child'

You've made my night, Thank you :D

The donkey Sanctuary is your best bet, although i do know they recommend and only rehome donkeys in pairs due to them bonding.

Which is admirable as apparently it can casue piles :P, sorry, being silly there. :) There is nothing wrong with being concerned about a fellow equines welfare, but I think the OP has explained and answered the questions.

Now go and hug that foal of yours.

Never a good thing lol ;) Yes this did turn nasty quickly and my heated temper as usual got the better of me.

She indulged in her mums poo today and has a poo stained face so at the moment it's pats from a distance

I did look at re-homing from there, but they have a strange clause which states:
"Subject to current availability, there is provision for the placement of a single donkey as a companion to a privately owned donkey. In such circumstances there is a requirement that ownership of such privately owned donkey be transferred to The Donkey Sanctuary. This will be subject to a ‘cooling off’ period of 21 days to allow the Foster Carer to reconsider his or her position prior to receiving a donkey under the Foster Scheme."

Which I did not want.

That old wives' tale.. Needless to say, completely untrue.

I agree... Hope they don't, or the horse's this chap has been living with for 2 years now will be riddled with diseases!

Uncalled for. Unfortunately you are now proving my comment about schoolyards...

Look, Old_Classic, I do not know you, you do not know me. Personally, I couldn't give a poo about whether you like me or not - your opinion.
We all know HHO can get a bit.. feisty! I for one, am sorry for my comments, and i'm sorry if they offended you - I've learnt to take things lightly so,
Shall we just shake hands and leave it?

Peanuts, people on here can be brutal!! But equally, you do get a lot of good, sensible, impartial advice. You just have to take the good with the bad, and learn from harsh comments rather than getting upset by them.

I think people just jumped on you a bit in the first post because they were worried about the filly, as being put in foal at that age can be damaging. But it's obvious you're going to separate them, and do the best by them, so no harm done.

Like others have said, I would separate filly from the boys, but she does need a companion! Try one of the horse or donkey sanctuaries for a companion on loan?

That is bizarre

There are other horse sanctuaries which have donkeys, have a google. And of course plenty of decent animals go for next to nothing at the new forest sales.

RSC I should imagine that clause is in so that when the Donks pair bond they will never be separated and cause suffering because both will belong to the donkey sanctuary.

I'm sure if you talk to them and describe your predicament they will suggest something. Failing that Appleby Horse fair is soon and there are always Donks there !!!!!!!!!! ;-)
