Are they really going for £9K these days? My word, I doubt I’ll ever buy another at this rate!
To be fair, from his advert he's had jobs since leaving racing. To me an "ex racehorse" is one who's no longer racing but hasn't really been restarted as anything else.
That dude is a nice event type, good all rounder who happens to have raced previously. Other than perhaps that he'd be eligible for RoR stuff I don't think the racing bit is hugely relevant. It's a bit like me saying Charlie is an ex driving horse - technically he is but he's also got novice BD points, and a clean xc record at 80. The fact that he's been in shafts at one point isn't really hugely relevant

I just read the advert, hadn’t seen the updates after the OP said she’d refunded the money. He’s a lovely looking boy.

Y'know I was thinking about it...when people here "ex racer" they expect the horse to be cheap. Which the horse may be cheap if it is fresh off the track and/or has an injury, or something that may impact its ridden career.

If a horse is sane, sound, and doing well at another job outside of racing (whether that's hunting, eventing, dressage, or just all around riding), and is overall a nice type, it should fetch a good price. The fact that if raced at some point doesn't equal cheap, and it shouldn't, in some cases.

What does make me laugh with the prices of racehorses straight out training is you now add on another 0 to the price tag. If you put that very same horse through the bloodstock sales it would be bottom bids of £800-1000 ???

We sell most of ours now unless the owner specifically wants them loaned and it's safe to say I won't be buying one any time soon - mainly because I know exactly what they are ???

i think both of theses people seller and buyer where both out of line and it’s was inappropriate to b## and fight on a public forum. I also think there needs to be rules to stop stuff like this on this forum because it’s causing unnecessary drama .

Really? I suggest you go back and re read. The seller was messed around from the payment being made, the buyer was clearly out of her depth and not in contact at all till prodded. The buyer made an appointment to collect and didn't show up, not even a text.
It took the seller to use a different number to use to get through as buyer not picking up or responding otherwise.
Seller has come out head scratching at the whole debacle but head held up. Buyer a muppet of highest degree.

But aren’t many posts on forums out of line? Just look at the comments re Charlottes horse. She was decent enough to announce she’d sold him and no doubt realised there’d by ‘feed back’. Many of these comments have a whiff of the green eyed monster. Just because someone can’t afford to pay for a horse at whatever level doesn’t mean it’s over priced - just that they dont have the means to progress a sale.

I think I’m (wrongly) prejudiced after a mate bought an ex-racer. Even getting him out of the field was a trauma! She’s an amazing horse person and has worked wonders on him, gone through a massive rehabilitation after an injury.

I think I hear TB (having had a TB mare on full loan and seen her injury post trying to get through a fence, she very nearly went through the tendon) and automatically imagine it’ll be a nightmare. I know this is wrong, much like Shilasdair’s outrageous stereotyping of cobs. ?

Seller was a bloody saint!

She refunded when there was no legal necessity to do that, the buyer was very naive and very lucky.

He’s gone to be a huntsman’s horse, believe me he is worth the money. My others aren’t that much money, they have only just started re-education.

I'm glad he's gone to a good home. One good thing to come from Covid and the hike in horse prices is that properly produced TB's are realising the prices they deserve, comparable with WBs and ISH.
Just be careful you don't get a warning for advertising.

I have come to the conclusion that very sadly I won't be able to afford a horse to care for & ride again after H. I'm too old for quirks and youngsters and I simply wouldn't be able to find the purchase price of something reasonably sane. Although I occasionally think that a life without early mornings and endless poo would be nice, in reality I'm pretty bereft at the thought of being horseless after ... oooh! most of my life ... ?

if I win the lottery I would open a yard and find lots of bears (my pony) for people such as you to loan to. I couldn’t have got him without help from family and I can’t “take a punt” cause I’m just too nervous for that sort of thing. So in my dream yard everyone will be the super gentle happy hacker without the price tag. What could go wrong ?

Good news! Some folk shouldn’t be buying horses if they don’t know the first thing about the terms surrounding horses. Your advert was very very clear.

Clearly a very novice owner being led round by their nose by a friend. Yes exracers straight out of racing don’t tend to go for that amount however he’s clearly being doing other things and the value has risen. glad he’s got a better home now ?

An uncalled for comment, in my opinion.

The person was an epic time waster. Think of how the OP feels. If the truth makes them feel bad then there isn’t anything that can be done about it. It is what it is

Buy horse, pay for it, then don't get in touch despite umpteen attempts by seller, who has now turned away other buyers, say you're collecting horse, don't show up again, have to be contacted on a different phone.
Not sure what else other than time wasting this is.
Once buyer had wobbles, they should have contacted the seller straight off & told them they didn't want the horse.

I can have poor impulse control when it comes to animals, especially horses, and I think that may be an issue for the initial purchaser. We all make mistakes but she should have taken ownership of hers and talked candidly to the vendor. The worst that could have happened was she would have to accept ownership of the horse and see how it panned out. I absolutely fail to see how she could have claimed deceit over the horse’s racing background given the advertisement clearly depicting the horse racing. However, it’s an ill wind and the horse now has a new home and I hope the partnership brings much joy.

"Ex National Hunt" was a bit of a giveaway, too! :D
