I feed my horses Allen and Paige feeds, and just looking on the back of the bag, it says my gelding, who is 16.2hh, should be fed a minimum of 4kg of the feed for what work he is in (this is in the light-medium work catergory). Seeing as this is fed alongside the same amount of chaff, is this not a hell of a lot of feed? So far I've been feeding him about 1kg of that feed a day, along with the same number of scoops of chaff (so not the same weight), and that seems like a fair amount of feed.

Are these guidelines aimed at horses that don't get any forage of something, or am I just seriously underfeeding my horse (pretty sure I'm not, but opinions welcome

Thanks for anyone who can help me on this issue.

Nope, not speedibeet, but put enough water into in so that the pellets of feed turn into that sort of consistancy (some of the feeds say to add twice as much water as feed, some say add same amount of water, but I normally go for sloppy feed over harder feed).

Atm mine says 3kg - which is only 1 scoop morning and evening! plus i think 4-7kg of forage
A stubbs scoop of nuts is usually around 1.5kg, mix - 1kg, chaff - 300g from what iv found that is, so could you be feeding more than you think?

or is it a fibre based feed so 4kg is ok

p.s. thats normal pony nuts size not the really small pellets of fast fibre etc

Nope, mine says 4kg, and is the Power and Performance for Wings, and Calm and Condition for Monica (Wings doing a lot more work, and in medium work). My scoop is really small, so only holds 500g, so that would be 8 scoops overall to feed him the minimum amount it suggests?

IME all feed manufacturer guidelines are like this. If I fed my horse the amount it suggested on the bag, she would be as wide as she is tall. I wouldn't worry about it - if he is looking well then just carry on as you are!

ahh ok that does sound about right for medium ish work

but i dont think that takes into account the chaff (especially if its high energy) I usually use that weight as a guideline for the total amount of feed and change it on the individual horses condition.
Im sure somebody will give you a much better answer

Bob_Rob_n_Tiff, thanks for that, I thought 4kg was really huge though, especially as that is the minimum guideline, the maximum for medium work is 6kg, which is a huge amount, especially when you add the chaff?

I tend to agree with this. If you are really worried you could add a generic vitamin and mineral supplement although I tend to work on the basis that grass and good quality hay/haylage is sufficient.

As an aside I also think that what we class as medium work these days would be classified as light work 10 years ago. Mine school 4 /5 days a week for about 45 mins, jump once a week and hack for about 45 mins once a week. I count this as light work.

Thanks for that. With Wings I do 2/3 sessions of schooling (pretty much constant work) for 45 mins, 1/2 sessions of fast work, 1 jumping session for about 1 hour, and the rest hard, fast walking/some trotting hacking, with one day off a week.

The 4kg of feed is in the light/medium work catergory, and is the minimum guideline amount for his size/work/weight.

Yeah, I've always thought Wings is in medium work, because of the fast work etc., and soon will be doing lessons, showjumping competitions etc., which I think is classed as medium work, whereas hard work is three day events etc.

I phoned allen and paige .I have 16 h slightly built tbx who was underweight. She is on small scoop of c and c small scoop of fast fibre large scoop of chaff plus as much haylage as she wants twice a day. They said I was feeding the right amounts and she didnt need any supplements as they were all added to c and c .She has added 50 kg in weight on this feed .
She is ridden 6 days a week long hacks and schooling occassional jumping.

I have the A&P booklet and light/medium work to them is 1-1.5 hours a day of hacking schooling or competiting at RC level. They say that William Funnel is feeding the medium energy hacking mix in the Medium to light section.

Medium/Hard work = racing/ three day eventers or advanced ODE's/point to pointing/racing/hunting.

Power and performance is part of the Medium/hard work section feeds and the activities they talk about in this section would indicate quite a bit of work.

I would continue to feed at the light work rate as compared to what they seem to consider as medium/hard you are probably more in the light section.

I think it can be confusing but they do say all recommendations are guidelines and should be adapted for individual horses.

I do what I consider LW which is hacking/RC/showing and I am feeding the bottom end of the LW of slim and healthy to my pony and he still has a shiny coat and enough energy to do what I want.
