Having watched the Parelli demo at the Royal Show I am left somewhat incensed. The horse handling was fine, its the commentator who has made me so fuming.

During the demo he mentioned the upcoming visit of the Parellis to NEC in August (fair do's you want people to know about it and go there) but why say the following...

'If you dont love horses, I mean REALLY love horses....dont come....you wont get what we are saying'

Now does that make YOU want to go ???

How to shoot yourself in the foot.

how to put peoples back up!

Oh, it's the old "we operate on a higher plane than you plebs" attitude! I know I love my horses beyond words and I couldn't give a flying f**k what Pat Parelli, Kelly Marks, Monty Roberts and all the other sanctimonious "experts" say!!! They feed off peoples' insecurities and that's just WRONG!

Couldn't have put it better myself, so I just quoted your reply!

Now this is interesting as a work contact of mine who is involved with H+C TV is also backer of a livery yard, who ran a Pareli event recently...he sent me a mail inviting me but saying "if you don't really really understand Pareli, don't bother to come".....I was a bit taken aback myself....

As it happened, I was judging the in hand classes at a show and couldn't make it (see? I can do snooty too?!), but I also noted the somewhat superior attitude - what's that all about then??

How charming, well think they ko what they can do with that then, I love my horses very very much,.... Better not risk not getting what there saying though had I.

but shouldnt they be encouraging people 'who dont undertand parelli' to come, not put them off?
or is it only about preaching to the already converted?

I heard that comment as well and it surprised me too! Did sound rather stuck up!

I also love my horses and do respect what these people do, but I personally cant be bothered with it TBH. I do a bit of clicker training and that works well
smile.gif

I watched the demo at the Royal too.... all I could see was some horses that lunged well (Just watch me get shot down by the Parelli people for calling it lunging!

)
I was shocked by the attitude of the guy doing the commentary, but it seems something that we will have to become accustomed to as Parelli becomes more mainstream

Has anyone wathced the free DVD that came with H+R? Thta is also full of 'if you don't do parelli then you can't love your horse' cr@p....

Do you think I might get reported to the RSPCA as I don't do Parelli?

Hmmmm well tbh, I've felt like reporting some of the peeps that DO, do Parelli!!!

No, but your horse will never love you and you will not have a true bond with her.

you know I dont really have anything against Pirelli if people want to spend hundreds of pounds on an excuse not to ride thats ok by me but dont judge those of us who do want to ride and use free common sense.

although I had to laugh at one woman I know who if her horse does not give her permision to ride it goes back out in the field thats the kind of life I would like as a horse
owner: can I ride you today please
Horse: no
Owner: Aww ok have an apple

lol

thats really harsh

ive had my lad 20 years and only wish id been able to build up a special bond with him over this time , sigh

I think DD knows me well enough to take it.

Just remember peeps that the reason none of us will ever have 'that' special bond with our horses is that the work we do with them doesn't preserve their dignity....
We need dangly rope reins, rope belts and carrot sticks for that!

[/ QUOTE ] ROFL!! Thats fantastic

I have found there is value in doing some join up with horses. I like Richard Maxwell and Kelly Marks because they educate people who don't know (like me when I started out) or help those who get stuck with a problem, but both of them say that they don't have all the answers, that they do just use common sense and that your own ideas can be just as good. The Parelli 'only we are good enough to have relationships with horses' p****s me off big time though. No doubt they have some good people, but I have seen a couple of presenters who looked like accidents waiting to happen. With one of them we only had to wait until later in the day to see it
shocked.gif

Edited to add: I did some join-up with my mare and some groundwork on to help with manners, but its done now and our work together is about riding! She still seems pretty dignified to me!

I have used one of Kelly Marks students to help me with a difficult youngster. Lovely down-to-earth bloke and what he said and did made a lot of sense and helped me and the horse tremendously. On the other hand, there are a couple of parelli groupies on the yard whose horses walk all over them (literally!) and whose relationships with their horses are so fabulous they don't notice when they are lame!

That made me LMAO!! I think her horse can't reeeeally love her because PF is always VERY happy to be ridden. I'm sure she would tack herself up if she could

Has anyone gone on the Parelli site (presumably they have one) and told them how their attitude comes across?

I would be with the rest of you thinking "Pompous, up-your-backside attitude, well Sod you then" and not go on principle, even if I had been inclined to go for a look see in the first place.

I strongly suspect that to be able to post anything on one of these sites you are required to spend money and 'join' first.

Will give it a go though.

I know some people who used to swear by parelli, but they never seemed to ride and only did ground work. I suppose its got its place, but mainly for people and horses that lack confidence.

I have a fantastic bond with my horse, but that's just because I spend quality time with him.

I get the impression that as far as parelli is concerned the horse is never the problem always the human, but surely they all have their own personalities good or bad.

I quite agree however its that attitude of those who are supposed to be promoting it that stinks!

Im pretty open minded, hell i saw Pat years ago when there were about 20 of us at a demo, Im open to learning from all sides however the comments made in relation to the upcoming event have completely put my back up and are a total giveaway to the parelli attitude thats come to the fore in more recent years.
