Thanks Faracat, his story is fascinating isn't it? If anything that horse proved he was tough which is why I choose him for my mare. After all, as my mum would say "handsome is as handsome does".

The problem is that I'm wimpy when it comes to XC and my mare has to be ridden with 100% commitment (my instructor used to yell 'ride like a gladiator -death or glory!' during our SJ lessons!
). I once rode around Ashridge forest on the day of the sponsored ride and I was passed by a couple of loose horses that had dumped their riders and then run off into the woods. Later I was passed by a rider on foot looking for her horse - which wasn't one of the earlier loose ones because hers was a different colour!

I have always been told that ASB's have the most wonderful temperaments. have you found this to be true?
He's special not like other horses clever too clever really but nervous an amazing mover but like lots of very uphill horse he finds it difficult to stretch down he came to me as a driving horse and I drove him for the first two years he was here he hated it( I still feel bad about that) so I broke him to ride at ten and started training him for the dressage two years ago he's obedient trys so hard too hard you can take him anywhere without leading him he will just walk beside stand when you say stand he's absolutely aware of people as individuals a stranger would not get a hand on him only lets me ride him ( that's a real pain) .
I have tried and tried to get him to accept others but he trusts me and my groom although he does not like her to ride him.
He's stuck here for life now .
I call him my care in the community horse.

Mine's pretty good about going over things when he's in the zone, he tends to lock on ok, it's just that once he's locked on, he's going over, no matter how - stop dead and full on harrier jump jet launching is not uncommon Wish you hadn't told me that - I don't want to fall off

I now have a glorious mental picture of you in full gladiator costume hurtling over sj fences yelling "To death or glory!" (which is odd as I don't know what you look like, so I'm glossing over the details ).
We were using Dave the inflatable dolphin as a filler which doubled as an airjacket landing the other day. Much cheaper than a point2 as he came from poundland

Cant think of ever seeing a inflatable dolphin or uninflateable dolphin for that matter in any Hollywood films about the Romans ( that and time team is the source of my knowledge on all things roman).
But needs must a roman style tunic made of inflatable dolphins it is , I can see it now.

I don't think that a dolphin looks like a very cold tuna to me.

I found my boy's canter was by far the best I've ever ridden. He hadn't been worked in a long time when I started with him, and I did find that he was fairly difficult at first, but his temperament never wavered. The one time he went a bit nuts and threw me off, he did look terribly sorry afterward!
I did also find that for all of his troubles and uncertainty at first, he was one of the most eager to please horses I've ever had the pleasure to work with. Hot Stuff was also very picky when it came to people handling him, but if he trusted you, he could be a real sweetheart. He could be a pain at times, but I sure do miss him!dafthoss

and if your that worried I'm sure larry lilo would make a good air jacket he might be a bit easier to mould to the body than dave

It took nine months to get mine to do three strides of canter( partly because he had been taught not to for the driving) its still not easy but he improves slowly alll the time he trys really try's so it easy to forgive him.

The horse in the pic the OP ported doesn't look like a particularly good example of the breed? Pretty coat colour but terrible confo.
The herring-gut (and the appearance of a long back) is part of bred criteria but it's sickle hocked, very weak 2nd thigh, would be postlegged if it stood properly, and stands badly under itself in front. It's also got very upright pasturns but it's disguised by it's terrible stance.
Some of the others posted are rather nice and, although not such a pretty colour, a much nice example of a horse.

They are a bit other worldy I saw one in turkey who saw pale chestnut whose shine was pale green amazing irradiance he was like a horse from a dream.
AT's are tough endurance specialists used in the improvement that created the modern TB.
I had a quiet laugh at the posts that said they did not look robust the horse in the first picture would still be cantering across the steppe long after most of our horses had given up .
