Am i the only person in the world who doesn't like coloured horses????

[ QUOTE ]
izt???? what on gods earth makes you think i was talking about you???

i have no complex!!! perhaps your remark directed at me suggests you have???

I was making a point that confirmation IS the be all and end all ... RE: breed, type, performance not colour!!!

[/ QUOTE ]

I didn't think the comment was aimed at me, nor do I care who it was aimed at. MY point was that people can have a personal preference re horse colour regardless.

Not forgetting attitude and personality - after all you can have a stunner but if it's a git then it's not much good!

Honeypots... sorry you feel that way.. but you will see directed at no one inparticular... I think it it narrow minded, short sighted and uneducated to class ANY horse on it's colour and I feel the "colour" put down was getting rather unnesasary..oops. spelling.. 90% of horse owners ARE happy hackers.... a demeaning term ...I know... sorry... and cobs and coloured are the best by far for general fun loving, happy owning fun times!!!
I just find it astonishing.... that coat colour factors... and I am not known as being PC!!
It also makes me cross can not deny it to see people putting down a type how clearly can't ride correctly...

Don't personally care WHAT colour the horse is, so long as it is capable of doing the job I personally want it to do - for sure a cob would never fulfill that, hence they are not my cup of tea - neither are bay mares, but I own one and she is super!

Panther, you seem to have taked it personally that I asked if I was weird not to like coloured horses. I just wondered if I was alone in not liking the current trend.

It wasnt meant to cause offence, nor did I ask if people would choose colour over conformation or ability.

To be honest if I were offered a coloured horse, cob or otherwise, that would make me look like the best rider in the world and would be sucessful at whatever my chosen field was then I would probably take their hand off..... BUT if I had a choice of two such horses, one coloured and one not then I would choose the solid coloured one!

I didnt mean to cause anyone offence and would probably feel miffed if everyone started saying they hated black horses.... but no one has done a post like that yet.... or have they!!!!

What an odd post.

I find it utterly ridiculous and beyond understanding how any horse person would judge a horse on its colour unless they were showing and obviously were showing a particular breed that needed to be a particular colour

A good horse is a good horse no matter what colour it is

How silly??

Yes I think that too CM! no one complained about Milton or Desert Orchid did they!

my first pony was a bit like castle actually - only even littler! He loved his hunting too and showed all the big horses how to go on!

So, if there were perfect horses in all colours offered to you, you would struggle to choose then K?

Hey, I'm a very happy member of the happy hacker brigade and on a very hairy coloured and a non coloured cob too.
smile.gif

I think, TBH, people were just stating their preferances as they are entitled to do. I haven't really noticed anything being put down.. don't really see how people ride comes into it really...

I think you were a bit too nasty actually. Just because someone is not a fan of a particular colour - and chestnuts, cremellos and roans etc have been mentioned as well as coloureds, I don't think its necessary to have a go and say people are bad riders and own donkeys with poor confirmation!

Just because someone said they didn't like chestnut mares, a well known aversion, I wouldn't take offence as I love mine, but if someone said to me just because traditional coloured cobs weren't my cup of tea, I should shut up as I can't ride and I have an awful donkey horse I'd be horrified!!!

I can see why some people like traditional coloureds, I can see why some like cobs, they just aren't my particular thing. But if we all liked chestnut 3/4 TB mares, there would be a real shortage!!!

Yes a good horse is never a bad colour but you can't have a go just because someone isn't too fond of one particular colour.

(PS, though I'm not a total colored fan, I really like that one of I think Seaofdreams? Nearly all bay with small white splodges and top of tail white, bottom black?)

One day I was out hacking and a lady was passing by and said Castle looked like Desert Orchid! PMSL!

And she was definitely unhorsey, but I think Castle was quite pleased to be referred as a legend

Oh for goodness sake, all merlinsquest asked is whether people agreed with her re her dislike for the COLOUR of a horses, no one has said coloureds are useless, or that colour is more important than conformation or ability. Everyone has differences in what they personally find attractive in a horse so we aren't all going to agree, why turn it into an argument?

Personally I don't mind what colour a horse is, although not too keen on cremellos or those with blue eyes but have a real soft spot for black horses, probably because the horse I ride is black

ETS that was quick reply btw, wasn't aimed at you BB.

Its all down to choice, and trends, and who likes what...

If we all liked the same thing there would be a lot of unwanted horses of certain colours out there and a high price put on the ones in demand.

Weird how you dont see so many pink mercedes or lime green porches...... see its all personal preference, I like black cars, I like black horses its just my choice.

Judging by the amount of coloured foals out there at the moment there are a lot of people who like coloured horses, they can't all get bred by accident.... so perhaps despite the replies so far there are more people who like coloured horses than care to reply..... perhaps they think its a silly thread too and are too sensible to inflame a perfectly innocent situation.

Sorry not meant to sound defensive but dont like to think that i have offended anyone, not what i meant to do at all
grin.gif

Hurrah, someone else likes black ones.... I was beginning to think that black was non existant as no-one has said they like or dislike them........ they do get dusty though if anyone needs a reason!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
grin.gif

"My" pony gets hideously dusty in the summer, and all the little cuts and scratches he gets in the field really show up. Mind you it could be worse, I'd rather brush off dust than scrub poo stains

my personal dislike is cremello.

but as has already been said, a good 'un can be any colour.

right ok.. as a breeder.. of repute .. i have to say.. sorry for those who don't like what i say.. but true none the less.... i find it rather silly, daft, childish etc... etc... to discuss colour as i felt as some sort of abilitly stopping factor there are coloured around Badminton!!!.. although this is not directed either personally at marlinsquest... who started this thread.. may be my bad mood... maybe... the fact the us breeders invest soo much time and effort into our horses, their select breeding etc... it pee's me off, i don't know... but... i find it very chav... ohh god ... know ...someone... wil take it wrong way... but on H&H site perhaps I expected alittle more than that??
Perhaps discontent even at "some" of the current horse franturnity?? Our chestnut gelding who is TBxTrek and notouriously hot mix has taken my 12 yr old to BD medium plus!!! Find talk like this such trivia... so silly..... so chav..... but as I am new to this and as it is a discussion forum I should shut my mounth! probably yes!! So can not help then but comment on people's position etc..... Can't help it in the blood!!! As a child my mother was humililated by my DC many a time... and I have been too by my daughters DC... like in boot camp... BUT got to say cos i will never lie...never does anyone any harm... constructive critics!!

Don't get me wrong, coloured cobs look the bees knees pulling a gypsy caravan or, like one I used to know, pulling a coal trolley in trade turn-out showing - he looked brilliant doing that because, to me, that's what they should be doing. I just don't do hairy unless, of course, it is something stunning like a Shire or a Clydesdale (but they're not coloured!!)

I could start a really controversial thread as I don't like bays (I'm famous for it) and they're arguably the most popular colour but I think bay is THE most boring colour there is. . . . LOL!!!
wink.gif

Forester how dare you !! :P :P :P

Not keen on bays either and do find them quite boring but as Missy is all bay and no white ... I couldnt care less about colour as I love her to bits , shes doing her job well and will hope to go far .

As for coloureds Love all coloureds, be it piebald, skewbald, roan, palomino, grey, black brown, pink, green, red, flourescent yellow !! As long as they do their job and have a good temperment couldnt care less ....Did I say

Couldnt care less ? :P :P

See now I never saw anyone saying they didn't like colours as they couldn't perform, they just said they didn't have a preference for them, but at the end of the day a good horse is never a bad colour.

I wanted a black 15h gelding as my first horse, I got a 14.2 chestnut mare - I didn't want a chesnut mare, they weren't my cup of tea but I got one!

So I might not want a coloured if i was shopping for one, but I still looked at coloured stallions for my mare if they were the right size, type and performance.

I'm using a spotty stallion and its not for his spots, its for his performance and the horse he is. I wasn't actually convinced about his colour, but the stallion himself won me over!

i never used to like them but now there are alot more quality ones being bred in both the traditional and finer types, i am starting to quite like them, although if i had one i prefer the ones with more colour than white and i prefer dark heads with a nice blaze, rather than white heads, the only colour i really could not own is cremello.

As you said Panther 'it is a discussion forum'

I didnt post this thread to cause an arguement, but you seem determined to have one. You are spoiling what was an innocent question, and reading all sorts of predjudices into it.

I am sure there are millions of fantastic coloured horses out there, but I dont want one, I wanted a black one, does that make me weird, thats all I was asking.

I wouldnt buy a mare either, its just my choice, even though the first pony I looked after at the local riding school a million years ago was a mare...... (come to that she was black, that must be where it comes from) I just wouldnt want to own one. The hafflinger in my sig is a mare and that is the one reason we dont own her!!!! So how short sighted is that???

I doesnt really matter to me how good they are as I am just an average rider who wants a friend. But I want to look at that friend and be happy with what I see, and if I dont like what I see I would be less happy.

I can understand the more competitive riders than me wanting to have the best horse possible regardless of looks or colour as the horse has a job to do, but mine just has to look pleasing to me................. and he does
grin.gif

I couldn't give a toss what colour a horse is. So long as it's personality is right and the overall picture is good. I'll buy them.
smile.gif

im not keen on coloureds, but if they are nicely marked then i do think they have the wow factor more than a "normal" coloured horse.

i saw a skewbald at a show once and it was the most beautiful coloured horse id ever seen.

im not keen on greys but i like dark dapple greys!! i only like coloureds with more colour than white. they cant have a white face!! i used to think bays were boring and i own 2!! i never used to like blacks but im buying a fell pony in october!!!
