Am I the only person not clapping.....

I do it because I think its nice, But I do completely understand why most people don't. A lot of my NHS friends have said they really don't care about it and would prefer other things, but I am clapping for the few who have said how nice it is for them and that it cheers them up. Obviously there is many other things we could be doing for the NHS and carers right now, but in those few minutes on a Thursday, the only thing I can do is clap. The rest of the time we should be pushing for social distancing, policy changes, protection and whatever else those in the NHS say they need.

We don’t clap. It’s pretty meaningless as far as I’m concerned. I’d rather the government did something about NHS pay and funded services properly. I have a few doctor and nurse friends and they feel the same.

It feels a bit like turning then into heroes and making out that they’re all doing it because they’re such good people makes it ok for the government to treat them badly.

I was until a few weeks ago when a nurse in our neighbourhood said her dog was petrified. We've stopped.

Let me tell you about it from the other side.

I am a courier, most of my normal work has stopped so I've been doing argos deliveries.

Now just think about how many people have touched each package I've put into my van, think about how many gates / doors/ bells I've had touch. The chances of me getting the virus or spreading it are very high, I suspect that I haven't so far as I've adhered to lock down, my van is disinfected 4 times a day my hands are done every time I touch something.

Now the emotional side, I was delivering the other day at 8Pm the street was out and asked if I could give them a flash and honk on my way down as this clap was for me. You can't not feel emotion and I'm the most unemotional person ever but you can't help fell emotional.

So when you say you don't get it or see the point... Its for a few minutes out of your life's to ACKNOWLEDGE other people out there working and keeping things going.

Nope I'm not clapping ? going to be honest I'm not sure I understand donating either - surely everyone who pays taxes is already funding the NHS !?

Quite, round here I heard not one clap but apparently in the centre of the village loads did it, Like others said patronising and pointless, we fund the NHS anyway, through taxes

I’m still working because I’m apparently keeping things going. I have no issue with people not seeing the point in clapping, and can empathise with those who don’t. No one has said it’s because they don’t appreciate what is being done. People can appreciate things from inside their own homes.

The first night I was picking my dog up from my daughter's at 8 p.m. and felt quite humbled by all her neighbours clapping, they were pleased as they got an actual NHS nurse to clap. Now I feel cynical, I'm no more heroic than the delivery drivers, garage staff, checkout people, less so in many ways as I have better PPE. I also think people are being encouraged by the govt to clap to "support the NHS" so they don't start to ask questions about sending CV people to care homes, the 90 yr old I saw last week who's had her valve replacement cancelled and will probably die, the friend (young mother) of a colleague who had her cancer surgery cancelled.

‘The UK's weekly applause for front-line workers tackling the coronavirus outbreak has "had its moment" and should end next Thursday, the woman behind it has suggested.
It would be "beautiful" to end Clap for Carers after its 10th week, and make it an annual event, Annemarie Plas said.‘

Coronavirus: Clap for Carers should end, says founder https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52773032

I hope that her wishes are followed. The weekly clap has had its day.

Thanks, Tiddles - I was too lazy to find a link. :D
I agree it should end - in my street no one much did anything last Thurs anyway.

Its time it stopped now. It was really nice for the first few weeks but its getting silly now. At least stop it until the next wave.....

Haha, I haven’t been a Tiddles before, though I have variously been most other variants of my username on here.

Good name, though, for that up-to-now nameless feral cat that lives in my hay barn...

We had nearby fireworks on week one, but have not heard anything since.

Consider yourself lucky that you weren't Pomster, or Pomikins.
:p

Its been a bit hijacked.
The truck shows are cancelled this year so all the truck show people are polishing their diesel tanks and driving past hospitals instead
I dont get the connection and think it might be more about showing off than supporting the nhs!

I hate to brag but I've been appreciating key workers since before it was trendy ???
(Social distancing too but that's another story lol)
I have *always* said thank you my bin men when I see them, same for my postie, people on tills in shops, the lady at the PO, hospital staff, DRs, vets etc. I do what I can to make doing their job easier (except the vets, my creatures are much less obliging than me....those buggers really earn their money ???) I vote for a party that I feel has more genuine intentions towards the NHS.
I'm very polite (unless you piss me off) and genuinely do appreciate people doing their jobs.
I think people generally appreciate a bit of manners and kindness over the clap ???
I did do the first couple of claps as we have several NHS workers on my street but now I'm finding it a bit wearing.
