Sorry if this would be better in NL? But just trying to gauge whether it is worth me taking on a lorry on loan, and how many times a month I might compete - so wondering on average how many times a month you compete?

Plus can anyone add to my list of venues in the Glos area which do UNAFF dressage, SJ and Hunter trials, I have:

Hartpury
Summerhouse
Allens Hill
Bromyard
Sapey
Hilltop XC Ledbury
Gadbury
Huntley

Thanks

Well, once the weather is better and we have the lorry we will be out around twice a month, more in the summer. In the summer probably go somewhere, whether dressage, XC practice or an event of some sort every week I hope/guess

If we come anywhere near you are welcome to pop B on our little lorry

Well when I had a fully functioning horse ;

I used to compete 3 times a month (2 weekends and one weekday)
And go to PC rallies every week

So the lorry would be used 7/8 times a month !

Now the lorry is used more in trips to the vets lol !

At the moment I'm doing about 2 dressage comps a month, but now Jenny is starting to jump again I plan to either do 1-2 BD and 1 BSJA a month or 1-2 BSJA and 1 BD a month depending on what is on. I also use the lorry to go out for lessons and for off road riding, XC rides etc.

Hmmmm, it already sounds like my plans to go out at least twice a month are not unreasonable then!

I am just not sure whether I would enjoy competing that much - before when I had my own transport I also had an anti-horse OH, so didnt compete as much as I wanted to

But am I too lazy to compete 2-3 times a month

Sorry this is rhetorical, I am just dithering here

There is only one way to find out , Hire some transport , get to one competition , see if you enjoy it and then make a choice over the lorry

I'm sure I wouldn't get bored going out weekly:p, but due to family etc. can only get out once a month but for most people 2 times a month seems to be average.

Ooooh Gracelands, had forgotten them! Thanks BQ

And thanks Lucretia, I didnt realise Hunters did unaff too, I thought they were just for posh people

Forest of Dean
H & DRC, hold unaff dressage comps at various locations (Nick Schudemores Yard and my yard) and at Home Farm, Allensmore.
Bromyard EC
(sorry if some are too far and not Glos) just thinking of all the regional places.

I have planned most of my year up until Sept and it works out about once a fortnight - that includes going XC schooling too though
smile.gif

We do BD & BSJA & weather permitting, we try to be out every week doing one or the other all year round. We used to be out every week going to lessons too but now that I've got a school at home, someone comes to us.

I usually get out twice a month spring-autumn, and once a month in the winter. I think Abbey Dressage do unaffiliated stuff too (nr Ashchurch)

I like to get out once a week-sometimes more than that in the summer and sometimes less in the winter. I'm usually out in the trailer a couple of times a week even just to hack somewhere different.

I BE so try to do 2-3 BEs a month, plus have at least one or two training sessions a week to tide me over. Then I've got youngsters coming through so they'll be going to other things the days I'm not eventing. I can definitely justify having a lorry!!

Not much at all.

Last summer I did 5 local BSJA shows, 3 PNs and 2 local working hunters.

Really got my money out of my BSJA and BE membership!

Badger doesn't mind though!

Prior to an accident 2yrs ago, I was competing twice a week at one point, dressage and showing. Hope to get back to at least once a fortnight and build up on it this year

I competed 6 times last year, a few BD Novice tests and RC team dressage.

No transport and limited fundage so we don't get out much. I won't bother re-registering with BD until the days get longer and we can start hacking to Norton Heath (just moved within hacking distance).

Or I befriend a dressage minded livery who has a lorry and will accept petrol money, bacon sandwiches and test calling in return for lifts!

ATM, 2 x dressage and 1 x jumping/month, all unaffiliated. I don't have transport yet, so that's what's within hacking distance. The jumping is on school horses; once I get the spooky pony jumping, we may go more often.

I reckon I get between 20 and 22 competition 'days' per year...but there'll be two 3 day stay away shows in that total so the lorry probably does about 18 journey's per year. At £100 a time roughly to hire one I can afford to spend about £1800 per year on tax, insurance and servicing costs before hiring transport starts to look attractive...notwithstanding the convenience of having your own
smile.gif

I am not getting out much at the moment due to full-time work and studying at the same time! Having said that hope to be out at least twice per month in the summer.

I bought a lorry 18 months ago, took out a of a woppa of a loan to do it and got a 3.5 ton new build. As much as I occassionaly have palpitations when I look at my bank statement I really love the freedom and ease of having a wagon (as opposed to my previous ancient trailer). As much as I think it is a good thing to be sensible (whilst I clearly am not!) I also think that sometimes you've just gotta go for it!!

To add to your list:
Rockhampton
Lyneham Heath (Nr Burford)
Crown Farm
Gracelands
Deer Park
Abbey Dressage
Home Farm Cheltenham

Further afield:
West Wilts
Blewbury
Addington

I am out generally every weekend (except when snowed in!). Because I have 2 fit, I will also compete both sat and sun on some occasions!

Thanks v much for the additions to my list of venues everyone, it is much appreciated

I had forgotten Pauntley because it is within hacking distance of our yard

but have added all the suggestions to my list
