So, it's my birthday today, and as a special treat my parents are treating me to £100 towards a bridle of my choice (obviously I can do more expensive but I pay for the rest) because currently Jojo is in a hodge-podge of other bridles and I don't feel like she's particularly comfortable in her hodge-podge frankenbridle and now that she's competing more seriously and doing more lessons I feel like it's time for a properly nice bridle for her.

For the past few months I have been debating on whether to try an anatomical bridle for her. My chiro has already said she's stiff through the poll, plus she is quite resistant in the contact and she does tend to finish a ride and rub her face on her leg (which I've recently found out is a sign that a horse is uncomfortable in their bridle)

I feel like something that's cut back a bit around the ears might suit her, but you just don't hear a lot about people using anatomic bridles on Welshies so I was struggling to find what other people might recommend for her head shape!

For added info her main discipline is dressage and her current frankenbridle is basically a simple flat noseband hunter bridle. She has been tried in a grackle noseband and a standard cavesson with a flash and there was no difference in her way of going or her after-ride tendencies

I don’t know specifically about a Welsh but I asked the same question a few days ago and had a really nice recommendation but I can’t off the top of my head remember the brand. I didn’t like the crank version which is what I’m after but the other versions were lovely. I’ll look through and find it!

Wolds exclusive bling - check their Facebook page. The make made to measure beautiful bridles - including anatomical.
You chose the colour, leather type, whether it’s rolled or not...😍
They do a whole range for natives/ponies so you won’t have a problem there.

I have a Welsh cross and I've been using a Collegiate Comfitec since March - I really like it. Cassie definitely finds it much more comfortable and she takes the contact forward so much more. It's very reasonable in terms of price (I paid £99 without reins for mine) and is perfectly good quality. They do come up a little small - she is usually in a cob size, but this one is full size and I've had other Collegiate bridles before with similar sizing. x

If your budget stretches to it then I'd recommend a Quantum bridle - details on their website, easily found by google search. They are dressage legal and are made to measure so an exact fit for your horse. My little cob has one and seems really comfortable in it.

I have had great problems finding bridles to fit my Welshie as she is part full size (headpiece) and part cob size (everything else) so I am forced to mix and match. She also has very wide ears at the base meaning every headpiece rubbed the back of her ears. Best anatomical headpiece I have found is CK Equine.

Love Henry James stuff, the quality for the price is excellent! Though CK Equine are also good, I prefer the design of my Henry James bridle.

Yes this is the problem I'm finding, she's very wide around the headpiece and browband area (she's in a cob but I'm tempted to go up to full) and like yours also has very wide ears at the base! (that's why I was thinking a more cut back design across the poll)
However most cob size cheekpieces come up too big for her so we're using pony ones at the moment.
Her noseband is cob-sized and that fits nicely!

I'm going to get the tape measure out tonight to measure her properly instead of guessing, especially if I do go for a more bespoke fitted bridle.

You've all given me some great brand suggestions, but they still have a lot of choice within them!
For a pony that rubs her face after rides, should I keep her in a standard cavesson?
You see a lot of people with that problem talking about the Micklem bridles or the PS of Sweden high jump (which the Collegiate Comfitec looks similar to?) or the GFS Prosperity.... but I don't know if anything like that would be any good for her!

Another one for horsemanship saddlery bridles. Lovely soft leather and really well made. My mare is going so much better in this bridle and has stopped head rubbing after being ridden

BR bridles. You can pick and choose your own bridle from a range of different shapes headpieces, nose bands etc. Really good quality for the price. My Connie has a black BR bridle with shaped comfort headpiece and a padded patent noseband. It’s great, looks v smart and has lasted very well.

All these newer anatomical bridles seem to be so chunky now. I guess that’s partly fashion and partly that wider leather with more padding would be more comfortable. A lot that I’m looking at would look ridiculous on my little horse! I’m struggling to find something nice, good quality but suitable for a dainties head.

I’ve just got a sabre for my welshD - sounds similar in size to yours. I’ve got the Córdoba sensitive headpiece (full size), FS brow band and cob everything else. I measured and emailed the sizes and they called to check I’d done it right. I was advised to get the measurements by fitting a bridle then measuring it flat out. I had been using tape measure over his head - wee soul, he has to put up with quite a lot!
He has a big gap between his ears and the FS sensitive headpiece seems to fit nicely.
Your mare is beautiful

I'm considering a Collegiate Comfitec for my Highland. Mainly because I'm lazy and keep having to swap my lovely block reins for my plain showing reins every week between doing dressage and showing so my solution is obviously buy another bridle 😂.

I like the look of the Collegiate, it has good reviews and the price seems like great value. I just need to do some measuring to work out the fit. Nice to see people on here recommending it 😁

Sabre cordoba are lovely bridles, I have one that is full round the ears and cob everywhere else that fits all of my horses :D It's about 10 years old and still polishes up like new.

latest victim... mine has the square raised cavesson but I don't think they do those any more. I also have a drop noseband for it.
