Already posted in the common room but hoping i get more responses here.

Yesterday a livery at my yard called to say my horse had ripped her horse's rug on sunday. She now expects me to buy her a new rug because it's completely shredded (my horse apparently bit the rug as they galloped around so not entirely convinced it's not repairable..)
My problem is, I don't have £100 lying around. She claims she's skint (been on 6 month sick leave because of her back but she can still muck out and ride..) but I'm at college and don't have a job. I'm paying for my horse out of my savings and being very careful about money.
Also, the ripped rug was given to her from a friend. Should i be replacing it with a brand new one?
Lastly.. Not sure why she waited 3 days to tell me about it. The groom that really disrespects me was whispering to her during the phonecall so thinking she convinced her to ask me?

WWYD?
- just buy her a new rug
- offer to contribute half
Any other suggestions?

I understand I have to be responsible for my horse but I wasn't there, I don't know exactly what happened or the extent of the damage. She chose to turn my horse out with hers and while they get on fine, I never asked her to so doesn't she take some responsibility for it?

I've offered her my HW combo which is only a couple of months old but apparently it's too big. She says she needs a new rug asap because her horse can't go out. I don't know what to do! :(

Any other suggestions?

Yes, tell her to stroll on. I would absolutely not pay for a new rug, nor replace the ripped one.

She has accepted the risk of turning her horse out with another by - turning her horse out with another.

This. No chance, how do you know she's not making it up? Her horse could've scratched on a hedge, spiky bit of fence and ripped it. I'm afraid if she turns out with others then its a possibility the rug could get ripped.

Don't give her a bean!

I would tell her to take a running jump!

Sounds to me like she wants a new rug and is looking for someone to fund it for her! If she chose to put your horse in with hers then I would say that she took that risk. I recently had my horse in with another horse who I knew was a rug destroyer, that was the risk I took and yes, he did end up with a couple of trashed rugs...and no I didn't expect the other owner to cough up for new ones!

Id first have a chat face to face and check out the rug to assess the damage. Personally I'd be happy to contribute towards repair costs because that's just me but I wouldn't expect to pay out for a brand new rug... Let's see what others think. If I horse say injured another horse in the field would the owner of the horse inflicting the injury be expected to pay any medical costs?

Oh I've just read the other replies, I guess I'm too soft! If it was a livery I trusted I'd contribute but someone trying to pull a fast one is another matter.

I wouldn't buy her a new one. She might just be trying her luck to see if she can guilt trip you into buying one. You've offered her a replacement one so its not as if you aren't trying to be helpful. And if she was that desperate surely one that's a bit big would do for a while?

Horses ripping rugs is just one of those annoying things that happens every now and then. It's not your fault :)

Likewise I would not be giving her anything ..... its just one of those things that happen when horses are turned out together. Very unfortunate but ....

When I was on livery and horses were kept together.....it was part and parcel of horses living in groups
Rugs got ripped. Horses play fought/kicked. My horse had a broken cannon bone, most likely resulting from a kick....horses are horses.

Tell her to do one.

Situations such as this one are precisely why I write it into the livery contracts that other owners cannot be held responsible for damage to property such as rugs or for injuries to your horse.

Apparently it's not repairable.. I struggle to believe that though because a) it's totally out of character for my horse and b) she said he was chasing her and bit it.. surely he wouldn't tear it apart from a tug?
She has lied to me before about something else so that's another reason for me not to trust her but I don't want to fall out and the other liveries to side with her.. The yard is bad enough without everyone against me!

As I said in your other thread, it sounds like this woman is a bully and just trying it on. Don'tlet her. I really don't think others would side with her as it is a common situation and the understood thing is that owners take responsibility for their own damage to rugs etc and for injuries to their horses.

If you turn your horse out with other horses then you just have to accept that rugs can get trashed. That is just horses! If one of my rugs was trashed I wouldn't expect the owner of the other horse to pay for it - particularly if it was an old rug!

Equally on the very few ocassions there has been a dust up in the field I haven't expected the owners of the other horse to pay my vets bills, and vice a versa. If she wants you to pay for the rug, what will she expect if the horse ever comes in from the field injured?

If you give in to this completely unreasonable demand she will only ask for more in the future. What next? Your horse makes hers gallop and you have to pay for the farrier to put the shoe back on? Your horse makes hers box walk so you have to pay for the extra bedding she needs?

She is taking the piss, tell her so. Have another yard linned up and give your notice if the liveries at this yard make your life miserable.

Can you have a word with the YO to find out what yard policy is on matters like this? No reason why you should buy a new rug to replace a secondhand one. I for one wouild be dropping an anonymous word into Social Securities ear if she is claiming for being off sick!

Cheeky mare! If she doesn't want her rugs ripped in future, section her mare off. Horses have teeth and occasionally use them.

I'd tell her to piss off.

I keep my 3 in with my friends 6 horses. 3 of his bicker and shred rugs, I started off with 3 shiny new rugs, I now have 3 scabby looking patched up rugs as his have shredded them. I wouldn't dream of asking him to replace them! It was my choice to turn out with his horses and therefore my risk

Nt being funny but.... Who exactly can afford £100 rugs when on sick leave?? Methinks someone is on a tax dodge.

Totally agree ^^^ Tell her to bog off perhaps:D

I've been in this situation before and was told my horse ripped the rug of a horse he passed by on his way into the stable. The owner of the horse left me in no doubt he expected me to buy a new one and as he was a policeman I did.

For me it was about taking responsibility for something my horse did and I wouldn't want another owner so financially out of pocket for his bad behaviour.

Reading some of these answers from you militant lot makes me so glad to have my own yard lol x

I wouldn't be buying another rug either. I might be prepared to pay for repairs if it was definitely my horse that did the damage and I was caught on a day when I was feeling both good-natured and flush. As other posters have said, how can you be sure that it was actually your horse?

If she needs to turn her horse out before she gets another rug, there's always the one you offered. Even if it doesn't fit that well it will be ok until the weekend when she can go shopping - or she could go now if she's on the sick and can drive.

I am slightly enraged at the thought of this woman and a conspiring groom trying to get a new rug out of a college student.... Tell her to do one!

I bet it is repairable, you COULD offer to pay for repair, but then you'd be accepting responsibility.

Yes, but that was witnessed someone who was independent - the person leading your horse, who really shouldn't have been that close to another horse anyway so that the event occurred. And frankly, just because it was a policeman's horse, what difference does that make? Are the police related to God or something?

The OP has only the other owner's version. Anything could have happened to cause the rug to rip. My own horse totally destroyed her rug because she had a funny way of rolling which pulled the rug so far to one side that she panicked, took off, broke the leg straps and the whole lot went over her head and was on the ground in front of her, still fastened across her chest. There were bits of rug and lining scattered all over the field.

You can easily get a decent turnout rug for well under £100 if you aren't a label fanatic and finally, why on earth has this owner only got one rug? That is just plain stupid and short-sighted.

As many others have said, she chooses to turn out with others, so she has to allow for a bit of "wear and tear" within the normal scheme of things. I'd only even consider paying for her repairs if my horse were a known serial rug-trasher and there were no other T/O options. Otherwise, them's the breaks I'm afraid. As you have described things, she can get lost!
