Disclaimer: This post contains photos of me riding hatless. I am a grown up, I am well aware of the risks. If you are offended by my choice, please do not comment saying so, and read no further.

So, I have returned home to the Shire from uni for my Easter hols...I have taken it upon myself to extend the obligatory 2 week break to just over 4 weeks  I have a show at Vale View coming up on Saturday, and then my second rounds at Swallowfield. In preparation I'm getting my butt in gear and am determined not to ride like a sack of spanners, and make Bruce go like he does at home/warming up at shows in the ring. He has this horrible habit of warming up all pingy, bouncy and active. But as soon as you enter the ring it is dead to your leg regardless of pony club kicking. I have swapped to longer spurs with a smooth rowel - am loving the cowboy swagger clunk noise they make when I walk!!!

We are holding dressage clinics at our yard at the mo - so my time in the school was limited, but I have lost 100% of my muscle tone so a short lesson suited me fine!! Fran/PS came and shouted at me in the school, making sure I wasn't doing awful things with hands/shoulders and ensuring a lack of dead baby neck.....

Bruce was super super super uphill and active today. He used to be ridden in an Albion SLK (which me/Fran/mum all HATE), we have now sold that and bought him a Bates Innova (cair removed and reflocked). That is currently being ripped apart and reflocked by our lovely saddler, so he was ridden in CS' today (having lost HUGE amounts of weight Bruce has gone from a wide headplate to a medium). I LOVE this saddle, the seat is just right for me. I have a dodgy right hip that cramps really easy, and in the SLK the seat was too deep and broad and I just couldn't wrap my thighs round Bruce in order to use my knees for gripping and aids so was using my lower far too much and giving myself a sore back and shoulders trying to force myself into that position.

Schooling today was a total success - I am pain free and am super pleased that Fran/OH/clinic instructor/audience said it looked lovely because it *felt* lovely! Was having a "I'm a rubbish rider, I look rubbish, it feels rubbish and I might as well give up" sort of phase and today has really really cheered me up :D Bruce has really started using his shoulder more, much more *up* and active. Like to think it is a combination of fitness/schooling/saddle change (I ride and sit differently in the Innova so I think my aids are clearer which helps). If it goes like this on Saturday I will drown him in sugar lumps...

I am pulling some deeeeelightful faces in these pictures and seem to be a, orange and b, jaw-bone-less....! But Bruce makes up for it:

As I said, time was of the essence so finished on a high note and took him round the field. This fields not in use at the mo as it is the summer side of our land - so the ground's perfect - bouncy, springy and stablio highlighter green apparently....

Mad hanson mane!

CC welcome. But zero hat comments.

He is absolutely stunning! Not much else to say really looks very similar to my boy taz just slightly more dappley in places, good luck for saturday

Awwww Bruce! Such a handsome boy and looking fab! He looks so soft and uphill! Well done for the matchy matchy and good luck next weekend. Can't wait til me and Duchesse can go out to some parties!

Yes I'm a fan he is a sweetie. Don't normally like the stripey pads but loving the blue colour combo!

I like your face photo but also like the swishy one too! He has lost lots of weight, what regime is he on!

:)

He looks lovely :D

Is PS going to be kicking your bum over the next 4 weeks by any chance ;)

Good luck at your events, already looking forward to the reports and lots of pics :)

I love bruce!! He's looks so similar to my old pony, absolutly stunning.

You two are looking fab, loving the blue. Best of luck in the comps and really look forward to reports :)

I'm also taking a sly early easter holiday and extended to 4 weeks. :p

He looks a lot more uphill and he's probably finding all easier now that he's lost a bit of weight. Now all he needs is a little prod with those roler spurs down the centre line and he will wow the judge!! Good luck!

there will be lots of butt kicking going on, me niks, and nik mine-she's the only person who can bluntly tell me when something is flipping awful and ill take it, and i think its the same with her.anyone else and id blow up!

really pleased with how he went today esp as we only had half an hour so really put the thumbscrews on him to work properly NOW, and he knuckled down and really did try.

a week of practice and im hoping he can maintain this quality of work at vale view, he'll have had another 2 weeks fittening work since his last show, so hoping the canter stays more active.

Oh, I'm not offended by your choice. It just tickles me that by putting that 'disclaimer' you made everyone who sees this think about the fact that you aren't wearing a hat. :D

Brucey looks awesome :) What a difference losing all that weight has done, he looks soooo different!! Good luck for your next show :)

He looks fabby!! Very trim! & check you out with your super long legs!

Bathed my pseudo bay today as lesson was cancelled and she deifnately came up like a mini unicorn! Even trimmed her tail ;)

Good luck for 2nd rounds!

Me and Fran/PS both ride Bruce, and we look very similar so therein lies the confusion!! And thankyou :)

No problem to answer that as you asked politely. Out of habit I suppose; I found they gave my prone to migraine self a really sore head, so from the age of about 14 I didn't wear one (only on the flat and only at home). Within less than half an hour of wearing one I have a thumping head.

Maybe you could get one that fits? Just a thought....

Like the Bruce one, but oh how I'd love to have legs like you!!
And, I am glad that you have made it clear you and PS look alike, and ride alike - I knew I wasn't imagining it lol
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply :)

How long have you had him ? how old is he ? What are you aiming for with him this year ?

Appologies if you have answered these questions in previous threads

My hat does fit. The GPA that I currently have for shows, and the spare one I have just in case do fit. Perfectly. But I am prone to a sore head and I would rather it not ruin something I love. END OF.
