Yesterday I hacked Charlie, my old TB, over to my friends field where he was suppose to be staying for the next month or so. She's got way to much grass so it seemed like the ideal solution to get hers eaten down a bit while allowing time for mine to grow (I can keep my fatties on a small barer bit but Charlie needed more!). All was well last night, everyone settled and getting on very well with no problems at all.

Fast forward to this morning and I was awoken by a phone call from my friend. Didn't actually panic as just thought she was having issues getting into the yard for various reasons! Sadly that was not the case - 'Charlie has cut his leg, it's bad, he needs the vet'
I still didn't panic, thinking it can't be THAT bad but dived out of bed, raided the tackroom for some first aid stuff and dashed down to her yard.

Well, bad really DID mean bad as this is what greeted me

My poor boy :(

Phoned the emergency vet who said they'd be out in half an hour so then we waited, and waited some more!! During which time I was fearing the worse, thinking it would be un-fixable and I was going to lose him :(

The vet eventually arrived and didn't seem all that phased by the wound so got to work cleaning it up

Thankfully it hadn't gone right down to the joint but with it being over the knee it was impossible to stitch. So it was a case of giving it a major clean up and then adding a tonne of bandaging.

He also managed to take a chuck out of his hind hood too

So that's been cleaned up and bandaged as well.

Vet seemed very optimistic that is should heal well but obviously at this early stage infection is the main concern so I'll be keeping everything crossed for a while yet in the hope that he makes a full recovery. Any spare healing vibes would be much appreciated!

He'll be on boxrest for a while so have spent the afternoon sorting a stable out for him at home (I've not had horses there for over a year) and as soon as my lorry arrives home (I hired it out for the weekend!) I'll be going to pick my boy up. I just hope he can make it up the ramp :(

And a final pic of him in my friends stable after the vet had left

What a beautiful boy!

I wish you the best of luck and ever the optimist my horse shredded his leg/ tendons a few years ago and 12 weeks of box rest he's never had a problem with it since, including qualifying for the pony club championships!!

Poor boy, that's an awkward place to injure. My friends cob did both her knees badly a few years ago, she put medical grade manuka honey on them and they healed up much faster than vet expected

Hello there. Serial lurker, but I registered as I wanted to share my experience with a badly cut knee with you. A few years ago my horse cut his knee very badly with added complication of severe infection. It was on the front of the knee and a very nasty injury. Vet was concerned about the potential loss of sinoval (sp?) fluid. Eight weeks later after antibiotics, pressure bandaging and box rest you'd barely have known that he'd cut it. Amazing how well, with the right care, they heal. So loads of positive vibes to you and Charlie, I'm sure he'll be fine.

It is amazing what will heal, we had a 24 yr old TB who had very similar injury and it healed really, really well, he did have a bandage sore which left a white scar but wound closed and healed quickly and completely. Good luck.

Poor Charlie, such a shame that he's managed to injure himself on his first night in a lovely field. Will you be able to graze him in hand for a few mins each day? It looks like the vet did a great job of sorting it out so fingers crossed he won't get an infection. Do you have to have the vet daily to re-dress the wound now? Hope he copes okay with the box rest and makes a speedy recovery; I also think Manuka honey would be a good idea, not sure whether you can bandage on top though.

It will heal well.

At least you can bandage it. My friends horse ripped his shoulder open (You could put your fist in it) It was stitched but they broke down after a week. Our worry was that he had damaged the muscle, but he moves just as well as he did before. As an Endurance horse he has never been vetted out and covers the ground with a beautiful length of stride.

Get hold of Ainsworths http://www.ainsworths.com/ and get some Injury 200cc also give him some Arnica.

Good Luck. keep the photos coming with his process.

Just been to collect him, hadn't seen him since late morning but I'm very relieved that he was very bright and marched out of the stable and loaded/traveled like a dream. He's now installed safely back at home which is nice as they haven't been home for over a year, just a shame it's not better circumstances!

Will try and answer all the questions -

Vet is back out on Wednesday to redress/clean the wound

I will ask about in hand grazing then, I've got a lot of grass at home too so at least he'll get a bit although not as I had planned.

Need to sort feed out for him as he is going to drop weight - this is him after a week of box rest last time so I'm obviously concerned about that as it's going to be much longer this time

I've ordered some Aloe Vera jelly which apparently is super stuff so I'm hoping that helps the wound heal.

Thank you so much for all your healing vibes and positive stories, fingers crossed mine will be one of them in a couple of months time. I'll keep you posted :)

Good to hear he's safely home. He looked like he was a very well behaved patient! I look at the pics on here of horrific wounds in the vet section and am always astonished by how horses heal and how quickly they do so, so that is my wish for Charlie.

I would recommend getting a "Pressage" zipup pressure dressing for him - our old vets used to hire them out so it may be worth asking your vet - otherwise you will find them online. It will save you a fortune in vet wrap as well.

Also manuka honey is fab stuff our vet now recommends it for everything!

Good luck - your horse looks very much like mine and he looks such a lovely character and good patient. Ref his feeding, have you thought of something like Topspec Comprehensive Conditioner and/or micronised linseed - I think either should be ok for him on box rest?

Good luck!

Might be worth trying to feed him Turmeric, it is anti bac, anti inflam etc . If you can get him to eat it feed turmeric and either olive or coconut oil in equal quatities with 10 twists of black pepper. It really encourages healng. I hope it heals well.

Glad you got him home safely, he sounds like a model patient so hopefully the box rest period won't be too stressful for you both. Hope the vet visit on Wednesday goes well.

Poor boy, that's a big wound. Do you know how he did it?

Intrasite gel is fantastic stuff, they sell it on horsehealth. Your vet should be able to advise if it would help Charlie's wound.

Fingers crossed!

He's already on Tumeric for his creaky joints so will keep that up :)

I'll have a look at the pressage thing, have never heard of it before!

He is a good boy bless him which makes giving him injections nice and easy :)
