Are Rambo Rugs really worth the money?

Hi,

With potential new horse being vetted soon I am looking at different brands of rugs. Rambo's seem awfully expensive but yet to see a bad review. I was looking at this rug...

As I would have no rugs to begin with I thought this would be ideal, but what are they like when wet? Are they the same as the premier equine? As the horse would be wearing it day and night until I can save more pennys!

My oldest Rambo was bought around 1995 .
They are great rugs .
However as I own one rug consuming monster I can't buy them they are too expensive he tears his own outdoor rug and removes and trashes his friends .
 
Absolutely worth the money. They will last you yonks - my oldest Rambo is still being used every winter and has been going for over ten years.
 
I have had one since 1998, and it is still waterproof. Another from 2001 and although it lost the tail flap it is good in every other way.

However, I have also had 2 Rhinos and they have also been long lasting and waterproof, but cheaper.

Both are made by Horsewear, Ireland.
 
I only really buy Rambos and although they are expensive I do think they are worth it. I have a couple that are at least ten years old and are still in good condition. I think the outer is very tough so they seem difficult to destroy. I think the cheaper rugs tend to need replaced every couple of years so I think in the long run the Rambos are worth the money.

It is worth looking out for them on sale. I managed to get a brand new MW Supreme for £160 and I think they are usually nearer the £220 mark. I tend never to buy them full price.

I have a Rambo Duo too and really like it. It saves on cleaning costs as the liners can go in the washing machine. Even the heavier weight ones fit.

I have bought Amigos and Rhinos too. They don't seem quite the same quality although they can be used with the liner system too. The Rhino's are better than the Amigo and are often on sale on ebay too. I recently managed to get a LW Rhino to use with the liner system for £60.
 
I used to like horseware, but they come up smaller than they used to and don't last as well as they did. They are also I hear, no longer made in Ireland which is why they don't last as well. I tend to go with Fal now.
 
The old Rambos and Rhinos are brilliant - mine must be over 10 years old. The new ones are not nearly as good though wouldn't buy another now.
 
I just can't stand the clip fasteners at the front, leaving no adjustment at all. I buy their sweet itch hoodies, but they aren't big enough in the chest for mine.

People are commenting that theirs have lasted ten years, but I have Derby House and Shires turnouts that have lasted 9 years so far and were a quarter of the price of a Rambo..

If you have Rambos can you tell me how they are size wise in comparison once you have it lol.

I really rate Rambos but I do want a bucas Multipower for my mare as you can put it on a wet horse and turn them out which will be ideal for her.

I have amigos too. I like the fit on my cobs.
 
Never had a Rambo but I did have the amigo, which in the day was the cheaper alternative, however now its the mio! anyway it lasted years, until I put it on my youngster, who destroyed it really quickly! managed to break the fillet string, wiggled his way out of it, and proceeded to rip the inside and pulled out half the filling :'(

until he is old enough to look after his rugs, he will have the cheap alternative!

so in a word, until you know what the horse is like with their rugs, I'd go for the cheaper alternatives!
 
Any well made, well fitting rug is worth the moeny! Rambos are very good, I have two and love them. Always keep the rain out . I hate cheap rugs, my expensive ones last me forever and my horses are always comfy in them with no necks pulling back, tight shoulders etc. I've bought a few cheap rugs as a last resort due to shop not having sizes and they have lasted on average a week before being ripped up or fitting so badly I stopped using them.
 
Another with a collection of Rambo rugs dating back to the early 90s. Been used on a variety of horses and used consistently - been worth every penny. They wash well too.

In my opinion no they are not worth the money poor fit on big chested animals and too short in depth. Give me a Falpro or Shires any day.

My 2 Amigo's I tried last year - brand new were rubbish and leaked within one eyar and sold on 2nd hand.

My only Rambo is still in the bag since 1995 when my mare died - wont sell it as it has her sent on it but Things have moved on in the past 20 years and now there are much more superior rugs for fit and dept than Rambo

Will do! The only Rambo I have is The SI hoody. That fits well round the front, but surcingles have to be let right out to get round his belly!
 
Another joining the 'Rambos are great' corner. I've got a full wardrobe for 2 horses. I bought most of them second hand for a reasonable sum. I bought a Supreme MW new in a sale tho! I haven't regretted a single one of them and I've never come home to a wet horse. Been using them for about 14 years.

FWIW I wouldn't necessarily buy a duo new unless you find a great price. The outer has about 100g fill, so you'd have a more versatile collection if your outer rug was a true lightweight, no fill, and then use the liners to adjust the warmth. Otherwise you'll end up needing a LW in the spring. I've got a Supreme LW, but the normal rambo LW would be just as good and then you could choose the size of your hood. Mine are all 6'3 and I find the medium size hood that came with that size a bit mean on my cob types.
 
Love them and have loads, lights, medium and the odd heavy! Brought two when I had Mars and the one wug is still going, I was 17 and now 33! Lots of them have been 2nd and so worth the money!
 
Don't know about the turnout rugs but I always found their fleeces really weird. So tight on the chest and shoulder? This was the same on both a slim built TB and a slim built warmblood. V odd!
 
My oldest Rambos were bought in 1993 and still going strong.

I do find that the newer front clip fastening onto the central ring fit a narrower horse better than a heavier one. I use the Duo on most of my horses but the PE Trio on the two that are deeper through the body and big on the shoulder. For a rain sheet they have the Rambo Excels.
 
I had a Duo and a lightweight Supreme for my big-shouldered Irish mare, and they fit her perfectly.
I sold both when she died, and bought a few Premier Equine rugs. Blimmin' awful things - fit perfectly (he's a wide 15.2hh warmblood x Irish) but far too heavy. Shires and Fal aren't big enough for his wide neck. I promptly bought a second hand Duo and a new "Original" lightweight and I love them all over again. Wouldn't buy anything else for him now, though I will admit that Shires do fit my mum's TB really well and are fab, tough things for the price.

He is a ish with a decent shoulder and neck so hoping they will fit okay. I have some of my friends I can try on first just to be sure though.

I just can't bring myself to part with the amount of money for horse a rug - I would never spend that on me!! My last top was £6 from primark :)

Does anyone have a lightweight no fill? I was thinking maybe that would be a better option and buy the liners as I go? Just not sure which is the best way?

I have the Supreme with no fill and use it with the liners. I would say of the two the Supreme seems slightly better quality than the Duo I have. The Supreme is also good as it has no fill so could be used on warner days when the 100g Duo would be too warm.
 
I love the way they fit but mine started leaking badly after just two years which was very disappointing. I'm a bucas convert now, they are really great rugs!
 
they fit my ISH perfectly, he is a good "average" built horse. Chunky enough that you'd never get Bucas round him anyway! those things are made for whippets :o Amingos are rubbish, I only use mine as a summer sheet , no good in the rain.
 
I looked at the weatherbeeta but it is a 100g fill to start with then with the liner shoots up to 400g. You would need to purchase additional liner to get a mw option.
The bucas I've bought is a no fill outer with 150 and 300g liners. So should see me through all but the worst weather, as long as it fits!

There was recently a thread about bargain price of Rambo Original Lite turnouts at Robinsons. It's the blue one which is 100g. When I had just one rug it was this one and it worked out fine though I only rug in wet windy weather so no opportunity really for horse to get too hot. As it's breathable and fairly lightweight he didn't overheat if it stayed on in better weather until the evening for me to take it off. Wish they'd reduce the 0g because we'd be buying like a shot!
 
Rambos are very good rugs. I've bought lots over the years. However they are , i think, overpriced. After buying a Shires as an emergency stop gap I am now a convert to them. well priced, decent quality. good rugs.
