What do you do with yours ? Is it a reiner, cutter, pleasure, halter horse? My best friend went out to montana a couple of years ago and won a stunning filly in a raffle at the Nile Rodeo she is worth a lot of money lucky thing. He imported a stallion with impeccable halter blood lines and has won just about every class and championship it has been in since it has been in the country, also imported his son and that has done equally as well.He hopes to set up his own stud soon and has more coming into the country in the next month. His stallion has had many enquiries for stud services already. What blood lines do your horses have?

Christiamas will be able to help you here I think

I don't have "show" QH's though, or racers or halter ones - I purely
have cattle stock. They're the best in my opinion. Most of
mine are Foundation Bred and are the chunky small
ones bred for cutting, heeling or roping.

fab...love these posts....Ive got one although I dont think he has particularly good blood lines...he is very chilled though...I worked on a ranch when I was 19 with a grey moody QH...Loved her...didnt think I would get one of my own....8 years later have one myself...lovely breed..very chilled, look like big ponies at times and have big bums which makes you feel better about yourself as they look good...:0)
here's mine....

gorgeous horse just like my friends first stallion jay.His stallion is the most kind natured stallion i have ever met and i have never seen such a well put together horse in my life.I have tried riding western and find it quit difficult to get used to after riding english style for so long. But what amazingly talented and gentle natures these horse have and with western riding now becoming an olympic discipline i can see that more and more people are going to get into it!

Can I ask what exactly is 'Foundation Bred' ? I don't know anything about quarter horses really and this is a term I see quite often. There seems to be quite a few different types of quarter horse?

Spice was ex of an AA by Zero Skipkeo who was by Zero Depth Charge. The nicest mare but we lost her rising 6 when she broke a leg. The next was ex of a Welsh C by Red Hot Profit

And Sas

Sas had a son by a Trak stallion who seems to have more QH about him then mum. I think a dash of QH makes for a very nice horse.

this is great thankyou im going round to see my friend tomorrow to show him all the pictures and posts because im sure he would love to get intouch with you all to discuss more!

dont quite know to be honest...think it must be going back to the original breeding...might have to ask the others...?
Yep they are a wonderful breed...mine is so chilled....western riding is brill...prefer it to english....nicer manner and the horse is able to breath really....you are working more as a partnership really and relying on the horse as a colleague.
I ride long english style too....bad habits from western riding....

The Foundation Bred QH's are specifically bred to work cattle, basically
by careful usage of the foundation stallions of the breed.
So they are not bred for their beauty (although they are far more
beautiful to me than the show QH's and most definitely more
beautiful than the halter ones....euurgh!) but for their calm
and dependable nature regardless of the situation they find
themselves in.

Now with my all be it limited knowledge of western riding, I have actually found them to be quite similar in the way that the horse is trained, it's just trained to do slightly different things depending on the end job, but there is a lot of similarity in the training methods after all a horse is still a horse whatever breed it is!

I think it more likely that you ride better western if you find you now have more of a partnership with your horse than the style of riding itself.

yep you are right...western trained horses are generally just trained at a different pace I believe....mine is so much more relaxed and is used to things like gates, walking past plastic bags and walks backwards if asked....western riding you use your body much more then your legs....and your hands are used for stiring...its your body that does the command...where with english it is the reins, legs and bum...so quite simular but just different concepts too.....
I just find western riding so much more chilled....the horse can lower his head and you just seem to have a better bond as you are much more reliant on your body language and voice...I also feel there is more contact and you are sitting deeper...so it feels more natural...I think that is what is good about western riding really...

Can you ride quater horses in an english style and do well with it? Say if you wanted to do show jumping or dressage, would they excel? Because they look like such well put together horses, but I don't know of many that get very high up in english competition...

Yes they are pretty flexible horses and make nice round jumpers. I'll search for a photo of one of mine jumping with my daughter for you if you like. Will post here so check back.

The course in these piccies is only small, she is jumping to about 3ft nowadays. She's 11 years old by the way and the horse is 15.2hh.

No. He is the least valuable one I have - bottom of the pile I'm afraid, but my daughter has fallen in love with him so we have to keep him for the time being, LOL!!

I can't be bothered to dig through all the photos of my lot - too many and everyone has seen most of the piccies I have online, so would be boring.
