so went to my second show did bto spent about 10 mins walkin around tiny ring with about 20 other horses! and they told us sorry the judge is gonna be late so we were all told to line up and wait for them they came about 0 mins later and spent about a hour judging everyone by this ime it was boiling the horss were frustrated and my pony didnt like the mule behind him and was walking in circles backing up etc i was boiling in my tweed jacket and then we didnt eve get placed :( big waste of time poor ponies were so frustrated it wasnt fair on them also people got placed wearing flashes martingales and dutch gags

next class family pony we waited at the ringside just as the previous class was finishing and the judges disapeared for about 30 mins! then finally they came so we all walked around etc and they spent ages judging about 1 hr again still hot and the flies were out so my pony was throwing his head about so the judges didnt like that and then he wouldnt trot!!!! then i was in the line up and they only gave about 4 rosettes :( and it said in schedule MUST BE SHOWN IN SNAFFLE 2 horses got placed in pelhams

the worst bit was the judges wouldnt tell us what we did wrong!
 
I HATE shows like that. Its enough to put anyone off.
BUT, for future reference, if it says 'snaffles only' and horse are getting placed in pelhams, you have every right to make a formal complaint at the secutary (sp). Its about time that judges realise what the shedule actually says!
You also have every right to ask the judges on 'ways to improve', but be polite about it!!
Try again, and good luck for the next one.
 
I'm pretty sure Best turned out doesn't have to be to showing standards (as in the correct bit, no martingale, flashes etc), if someone is kitted up as a show jumper I'm sure they can still enter as it is about how clean and tidy your pony and tack is and the rider being in the correct clothing for there chosen discipline.

I could have just totally made that up though so please feel free to ignore me :o :D

3beasties - people did turn up in showjumping gear juniors in coloured chaps red and pink numnahs gags flashes coulored jumping whips etc! next show were going to we know the judge can actually judge

BTO certainly does have to be to showing standards! That is if it is a proper BTO, if someone turned up in my ring dressed as a showjumper, they would be down the end of the line.

Turnout should be:

If a native or unplaited horse:

A saddle that fits, preferably leather but I would prefer a clean well fitted synthetic to a dirty ill fitting leather one.
Pelham with TWO reins or either a double or a snaffle
NO coloured browbands
No numnah or if one has to be used make sure it is discreet and either black or brown
Tack should preferably be brown but black is acceptable at local level
Girths should be leather or if webbing it should match the horse as closely as possible - bay or chestnut - brown, greys - white and blacks - black.

The rider:

Tweed jacket
Velvet hat to suit jacket
Tan or brown gloves (not navy or black no matter what colour your jacket is!)
Showing cane
Cream or canary jods
Adults - long boots (can be brown or black) and spurs or dummy spurs
Juniors can wear jod boots (with joddie clips!)
Shirt and tie.
NO button hole

Plaited horse:

As above but, depending on the type, a coloured browband is correct

Rider:

Again as above but blue jacket and a button hole (to match browband if worn)

Needless to say, everything (including your stirrup irons) should be cleaned to within an inch of it's life and, if your tack is new, make sure it is well oiled! Oh and dont forget to clean the soles of your boots!

OP I am sorry you had such a bad experience, it is up to the judge to tell you where you went wrong - I would pick a better show next time, one that has judges who know what they are supposed to be judging!
 
sirenaXVI -thankyou very much now i know what is exactly right can you come and judge at our shows :p also why cant un plaited or natives wear coloured browbands and the riders have a button hole?

LOL! I tend to get booked far in advance!

When you show in a BTO class, you show to the breed standard or type of your chosen horse, natives, hunters, cobs, etc never ever wear coloured browbands and are always shown in tweed jackets, tradition dictates that buttonholes are not worn with tweed. Riding horse, Hack, PBArabs or Show Pony types are always shown in Navy (never ever ever black!) and it is correct to have a coloured browband and buttonhole - this probably harks back to past times when gentry rode this type of animal.:)

sirenaXVI - i bought my conemarra a purple velvet brownad ith matching button hole wore them today but he was plaited as mane is a mess atm (normally he is unplaited) so now do i need to get a plain browband?

Hmmmm well as long as he is plaited, at local level it should be fine, just don't let on his breeding ;) If you show him free, then yes, a plain leather browband is technically correct.
 
the problem is im not very good at plaiting had someone else do it for me as his mane is all rubbed out, now his mane is quite short and pulled can i show him unplaited like that?
 
Oh dear, doesnt sound like a good day, I am not fond of showing, always seems to clique. They should have at least given constructive feed back and I to would be one to complain!
 
Sorry you had a bad day. Although regarding the class lengths I have been in big classes lasting over an hour before. I am very fortunate that Genie just stands there and goes to sleep or just watches everyone else, but it is not always the case for others, and I have taken the time to just practice standing still with her.

I agree with Sirena on the turnout, although most shows will say no spurs in M&M classes, so I never wear spurs with Genie, even in turnout.

I hope you have a better show next time! At local level it's a bit of a minefield!
 
Thanks everyone :) next show hopefully there won't be a mule that he won't be distracted by! And i will do bro and then stick to the jumping and more exciting stuff :D
 
Next time I'm deffo doing the jumping but the working hunter looks fun as well might have a go at that anyone know what bylcream is?
