So, my BlackBerry has finally died after 18 months of abuse :( It's on a contract so I will get a new one as my contract is for 2 years. My questions are; What phone do you have? Does it stand up to the use and abuse you give it around horses? Or, do you have 2 phones, a cheap phone for use on the yard and one for use when you aren't around the horses? Or do you have one phone (e.g. Iphone/Blackberry) that does stand the test of time and doesn't break at the first sign of neglect.

Answers on a post card please. :D

Anything by Samsung! They are truly indestructible, I can vouch for that! Avoid Sony Ericssons and Blackberrys, tried and tested and failed miserably around the yard/riding in the rain/hunting!

Apparently SonyEricsson do a smart phone that is in a rubberised casing and tough or Samsung do an ordinary tough phone that is very good.

I've got a Motorola Defy that is specifically designed to be a lot tougher than usual smartphones, and it's been fab. It's been dropped in puddles, off horses, left in a field overnight and is still absolutely fine.

JCB phone ;) :D :D

Really, I used to have a Samsung Tocco Lite, finally laid it to rest when I dropped it in a water jump  however it went through 3 years of being eaten, trodden on, dropped, puddles, rain, you name it, tocco did it!

I would avoid an iPhone, they have glass screens and crack very easily, try and get one with a plasticy screen :)
I currently have an LG viewty, personally i hate the thing but its pretty indestructable!

I'm about to buy the Samsung c3350 solid x, rugged and waterproof, good battery life, camera, torch which would be useful. Okay it's not a smart phone but all I need is one for text and calls. About £70 to buy

HTC Desire HD, it comes to the yard, gets shoved in my pocket, dropped in my handbag etc etc etc. I have a rubbery case to protect the finish on the back but no screen protector and it never goes in a case. I take it to the yard, and use it while I am there. I've dropped it in the stable, off the horse onto a concrete yard and off the horse into a sand school. It is still working fine and looks pretty tidy. I've had it over 18months.

The battery life is a bit rubbish but then that is the case with most smart phones. The screen is huge which I like as I use the sat nav app instead of a proper sat nav and the kindle app instead of a kindle.

Husband has the slightly smaller HTC desire, and that has stood up to fairly serious abuse too, although it is short of memory space so I wouldn't recommend it. To give you an idea of how he treats his phones he has destroyed at least six..... of various designs.... there is still time for this one but it is doing better than the last few and has been dropped a decent number of times. It is the only phone that he has really taken to and utilised all the features too as it is pretty user friendly.

I have the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 - which is pretty much indestructible.

In the past 18 months, it's been dropped onto concrete far too many times to remember, been dropped in puddles, and it's even been dropped in the shower with me a couple of times :p

Apart from a few tiny scratches on the screen, it still works perfectly :D

Nokia slide phone - small compact, i've not broken one yet, and easy to answer and end calls on with gloves on. Otherwise you just keep missing calls as you fumble to answer. Also have a smart phone for e-mails, but not on a horse!

As already said by someone else. I have an iPhone but it's encased in a military type case so has withstood falling off a pony and being landed in. Dropped on the floor several times. Being sprayed with water. The only draw back is the screen doesn't work when wearing gloves. :-)

I can't be doing with a touch-screen phone around horses - no good for when you're riding and have gloves on as the screens don't respond!

My first priority is always that it is small enough to fit in the small pockets you get in breeches. I have a Blackberry Pearl and love it. It's case protects it when it gets dropped and/ or wet. Have had it over 18 months now and very happy with it.

Agree with the poster above who has said that Samsung are virtually indestructible- they are really good phones and have always had them in the past with no bother- even if i dropped them!

At the mo I have an HTC and that has been pretty good too, i can vouch for that- in the winter i was trotting and it fell out of my pocket, bounced over the lane, and it still worked- the problem was i was on my (nearly) 18hh horse and once i'm on him i daren't get off as can't get back on with out a big monting block, so i managed to summons a little old lady out of her house to walk down the lane to pick my phone up for me!!

Another Samsung person here. I've got a Galaxy S II and that stays firmly in the car when I'm at the yard. I have a cheap little fold up Samsung that I use round the horses. The screen can't get damaged as it's a foldy-up and the battery lasts several weeks before needing recharging (I hardly ever make a call on it though).

I sometimes have to open up the back to remove bits of hay, fluff etc from around the battery and even that doesn't seem to worry it. I think it cost me about £25 PAYG. It doesn't have a camera or anything but for a great emergency phone it's brilliant.

Forgot to add .... the little Samsung is so small it goes in a joddy coin type pocket. Except when I was out hacking the other week and I felt the saddle had gone lumpy. The phone had migrated out of the inside pocket and round to my bum. It survived my rising trot though!! (Fishing it out discreetly while riding along the road proved difficult but probably kept the motorists guessing what on earth I was doing!!)

I have an iPhone and a blackberry bold. Blackberry has just died after 6 months :( dropped in bucket of water twice! In a month! Have had 2 iPhones since Xmas too :((((

Another one for any Samsung. Got a """ TOCCO LITE""" Really good phone. My 14 yr old dropped it in the bath 2 years ago and it got drenched, anyway she dried it out and it worked perfectly. However it now needs a new battery. I use my sony vivaz but its touch screen,so have to avoid getting it wet. I wrecked my HTC wildfire as it was thirsty and got a drink of coffee!!!! lol (doesnt slide so cant use it). Ooops.

I have a htc for normal use. Use old phones with a payg sim for riding though so it doesn't matter if I lose or drop them. In summer I rarely have anything with zip pockets on so its jeans backpocket, jod pocket or the waistband of leggings so they often fall out. Best was an old Motorola razor, it once got lost hacking, found it a week later when the puddle it had been hidden in dried up. After a week in the airing cupboard it was fine again. Currently using an old cybershot that manages mud, puddles & drops well.

LOL - love this! ebay do some great, cheap cases that will protect even the most delicate of phones.

Avoid touch screen phones! I have the HTC Wildfire and it's useless in the snow/rain! I dread to think what would happen if I ever needed it in an emergency during those weather conditions. Really considering getting a cheap phone for yard use.

I have a samsung b2100 (solid extreme) its a couple of years old now, buts its waterproof, dustproof, drop proof (up to 2m onto concrete apparently), its got a torch and a camera/video. Its been so useful. when I got it I was working at a yard and kept dropping my poor old phone everywhere (waterbuckets, floors etc). This one is a little scratched from the abuse but still works, and just about fits into my pockets.
Oh, and it is most definitely slobber proof!!:D

I must say my blackberry curve (without a cover on) as been through hell and back... its been dropped on so many occasions, been for a dive in the loo, water trough and soggy puddles.. after 1 or two days with the hair dryer and then in the airing cupboard its fine.

I had the Iphone and that didnt with stand for long, i took it to the phone mechanic after getting it wet, we took it apart and i was shocked at all the starw bits and dirt i got collected in there.

I think the problem with some phones are that when they get wet , you need to avoid pressing any buttons and avoid touching the screen... u need to leave it or just take the battery out quickly. as once a button is pressed or so this is what then breaks/blows the circuit.

I hate touch screen phones.
I had a Blackberry for a while, until the cat broke it, then the next one ended up in the washing machine!
So now have a nice old and cheap phone, which is certainly tough and withstanding alot!

I have an old Nokia who has survived some impressive trials and tribulations - living outside in a field for some time, being pooed on when dropped in stable (only found it the next moring when poo rang!), being dropped in puddles, and most recently, dropped in a large pot of Creasote! Office tried to buy me an Iphone, but I declined - doesn't fit in my bra (no pockets!), and don't fancy falling off on one....

Nokia 3710 Fold – small and slim, no fuss answering and can’t accidentally phone anyone when it’s tucked down jods :). Survived me squishing it the other week…..before I’d stopped rolling 3 things went through my mind, s**t my horse, my saddle, my phone.
