Boggle- USA bound!

Sorry things aren’t yet going smoothly for you, let’s hope this is the last of your problems. Good that Pepper is ok and fingers crossed that Atlas has just tweaked something

Oh her poor little cone face! Am glad it was relatively simple, though surgery is always aargh. I hope Atlas has just tweaked something and he's also straightforward to fix.

We enjoy watching Saving Lives at Sea on the BBC, and I would say that 4 out of 5 dogs that have to be saved because they jumped off the cliff/chased a seagull out to sea/gets stranded seem to be spaniels of one sort or another. and we have friends whose spaniel jumped out of a first floor window when he heard his name being called. Must be a spaniel thing! Glad to hear she is now recovering.

My sisters dog just last week had to have surgery because she'd managed to gulp down a kebab stick. Apparently it has been happily sitting in her stomach for 3 weeks (When they had last been around said sticks) and no one was any the wiser until last week, when the stick decided to turn itself sideways in her tummy and cause a whole host of issues.

I bet you can't guess what kind of dog it is....

Cocker Spaniel 🤦‍♀️

My westie ate a stone and had to go into surgery last year age 14 🙄. I was beside myself with worry that she might struggle with the the recovery, but not a bit of it, she was bouncing around wanting to do stuff a week after surgery. Hopefully Pepper has a similar bounce back.

Of the dogs I've known to jump out of a 1st floor window, one was a jack russell, one a dalmatian and my own malinois cross (I do suspect he fell rather than actually jumped - he's not tried again since). The jack russell and my monster walked away from it, the dalmatian required expensive surgery for a badly fractured leg. So unfortunately, temporary lack of survival skills is not limited to spaniels.

Thanks everyone so much for all the Pepper well wishes!!!! She is doing good although keeps peeing herself but she's less than 48 hours post op. Hard to know if it's from the GA or the side effects of the gabapentin (though she doesn't seem dopey). She's in excellent spirits and seems to think she's just fine.

Atlas.. I don't know. He looks good on one rein and now just short on another in both fronts (he was obviously lame on one the other day). I have noticed the last few weeks he has preferred to walk on the gritty verge than tarmac, which is odd because he's totally rock crunching over all surfaces so it seemed strange for him to be "footy". He's overdue a trim as trimmer had to cancel, and he does seem to have quite a bit of false sole. But he has plenty of hoof wall so I don't think he's over worn his feet.

His feet are cold, no pulses, and I've put him on stall/run rest since friday (which is really big enough to trot around if he wanted) to reassess. Not a bad idea to pull him off the grass just incase albiet it's mostly dried up now.

Maybe the false sole is causing pressure somewhere? Odd for it to only show on one rein though maybe.

Of course my natural reaction is to run him down to the vets for a work up but I'm trying to be sensible and conservative and as the vets may well say rest for two weeks then come back, it seems sensible to perhaps try that first :)

A trim could be the answer.
My boy was “off” a few years back, as he had recently had hock injections I got twitchy and called the vet. In between making the call and the vet coming out, the farrier visited and he had his routine trim / shoeing.
He was absolutely fine for the vet when they came. His feet had got quite long and he is the horse version of the princess and the pea.

I’m still catching up reading your whole story on here (I started at the beginning because I’m moving my pony from America to the UK the end of this month and I’m so glad I did. Your journey has been amazing to read through and the community on this forum has been amazing.) but maybe he is sensitive to his angles being a touch long from a missed appointment? That’s something that always makes my guy a bit weird in his fronts and causes him to trip and just walk a little NQR. Mines also upright in his pasterns so I think the angle has a bigger effect on his movement.

I've got one who can start to look very lame if her false sole builds up. Fortunately she's also one who sheds quickly at the first sign of rain.

I found out earlier this year that not all vets know what it is and trying to explain leading a total drama queen across hardcore was a challenge - I swear she hadn't walked like that an hour earlier 🙄

Thanks all for the input I appreciate it! He’s looking quite a bit better. Still a little less “flowy” on one rein but he’s always been stronger on one than the other and my test is on hard undulating grass so not an easy small circle for him to trot.

He has ballooned in weight after just a week of doing nothing- Urgh!!!

Pepper is buzzing around like nothing ever happened but under strict supervision!

Thought I’d share these photos from the other week. We got caught in a huge hail storm and Atlas was such a babe about it. Felt a bit bad as D parents had come with us and we all got thoroughly drenched. I had his saddle a little too far forward so ignore that 😊

I love how Pepper is intently staring at the ball she’d carried all the way with her. She constantly likes to throw it in front of a very patient, good natured Atlas!

Wonderful photos 🥰

Is it possible he's just got a bruised sole?
Abscess coming?

He looks a bit down on his heals in the photo, I'd not be atall surprised if after walking on stones he's got an ouchy foot.

All possible… it was kind of odd when he started hugging the verge a bit because he’s really superb over all rocky surfaces and I don’t feel his feet were wearing too fast.

I was more worried about his heels being a little low behind but honestly I just don’t know enough about feet.

Are you able to take a picture of his feet just straight on and the bottom? Kind of more to look if they’re level and any possible things. My guy is built a lot like your boy in the feet department and I’ve found angles mean a lot. Also if it’s been off and on wet/dry even close to how Kentucky has been I would put solid money on a likely to be drawn out abscess you’re dealing with. I’ve known them to take a solid month or two to properly be done with on some horses depending on where it starts and where it ends up blowing out. They channel to least resistance route and that annoyingly can be the opposite of the quickest route

As much as I adore HHO I shy away from posting hoof photos because I feel you get so many opinions, often different and I get even more worried! He doesn’t wear level but he does land level. Or did. I need to recheck. I don’t think I’ve ever had a horse that wears perfectly though but maybe all mine have been broken 😞

I booked him into vets for next Wednesday so that would be nearly two weeks and in the mean time he’s in stall and run only.

Ps that’s interesting re the abscess thank you. We’ve been having crazy weather here too. Lots of short intense rain and then very hot and dry.

Winston's feet are a state at the moment. We had such a long dry spell, then some rain, then dry, then rain. His frogs are shedding, I'm presuming some false sole has come away, his bars are raised. And that's without the canker to worry about. (And he's being seen by the farrier every two weeks to cut back his frogs and debride the canker.) He is usually absolutely rock crunching but even he has found the stones a little uncomfortable.

Chances are it is weather related, so try not to panic. Do you have a trusted farrier you get to take a look?
