My friend. I have pain relief I can use but it’s not as strong as bute. But less hard on kidneys so I’ve given him that and I am 90% set on loading him up and taking him to this barn for some recovery.

What a mess. I feel so bad that I made the wrong choice and let him down.
 
Blimey what a horrible turn of events. I'd also move him now, before the bruises start to make him stiff. If it were me the trust would be gone now. How do you know they won't put him in danger again? It's utterly irresponsible to put him in with a known bully who's already hurt one horse. As for the dog, can you be certain it won't be off lead again?

It's not your fault. There's no way you could have known this was going to happen.
 
I can mitigate the dog by never taking Pepper there again but the whole thing was so traumatic.

To see you horse upside down having flipped over a fence. I ran over as soon as the cornering happened I was only ten meters away but I was on the other side of the fence and no amount of me yelling as I tried to get in would stop it. The horse just went crazy.

Atlas is no saint he’s cocky and young but he absolutely never does or has done anything like that in his life and he did nothing to deserve it. I didn’t take my eyes of him the minute he was turned out and within 20 mins this happened.

There may be another paddock option but I wouldn’t be turning him out in one for the foreseeable and I need a small quiet horse or two for him now not any kind of large herd I am terrified by what happened. The other barn came up with a million options and steps to get him ok and comfortable and seemed so thoughtful with how they could help him.

I’m going to go get him now. The poor poor thing to be moved again I hate it for him but I do think waiting until tomorrow will be a disaster.

Thanks he has a wound on his leg and kick mark but no obvious marks I didn’t see where they landed, I’m more worried about his entire body and neck from flipping over the fence. I would get the vet but he can’t have an IV of bute which I suspect is all they’d do anyway due to kidneys so I will wait until things settle next week and then have him looked at depending on what symptoms present.

A gallant effort of his though to try and jump something like that from a standstill even if he didn’t quite make it.

He was trembling and so upset but within five minutes he removed my cap with his teeth so I hope he will emotionally be ok quick.
 
What a truly ghastly thing to happen to both of them. You know him best so you are the best judge of when to move him but I would certainly move him. I think he might be constantly on alert and wary of his surroundings now and on watch for something happening again and that level of stress would not be good for his system. A quick move to somewhere he can feel safe would be the best medicine in my book.

Do you have equine bodyworkers or equivalent over there? Sometimes sore muscles just need some gentle massage rather than drugs to settle things down again - that and a calm routine and atmosphere.

I hope things get better soon for all of you.
 
Just seen this & taking the whole situation into account I’d get the hell out of dodge as soon as you can. It’s 35min not another epic trek across the country. He’ll be ok and probably will cope better before he stiffens up.

You’re never going to be able to trust current place to keep him safe. They’ve lied to you about the history of this other horse which given Atlas’s health history is unforgivable. If any horse needs NOT to be put in with a known bully it’s him!

What happened with Pepper is just the icing on the cake.

Well I guess I mapped it wrong. It’s 50 mins. That’s a lot for me to do every day but other than where I landed I didn’t ever find any good options closer as there’s less space.

But either way he’s installed and happy and I feel so happy with this barns attitude and the level of care they have already applied. If I only go four times a week or whatnot it’s better he’s somewhere where he’s safe than I can see him every day.

He says thanks mum for the fancy new dressage place.

What a horrible day. I need a drink. Thanks guys for all your support I am so glad I got him out and he seems good. We will see what he looks like physical tomorrow.

So sorry for all of you, what a horrible day. What does the barn manager have to say about the aggressive horse? Surely it has to separated from others now? I hope Atlas has got away with it without any lasting injuries, he’d probably benefit from being able to potter about and walk any stiffness off if possible. I think I’d be moving too if you’ve lost trust where he is. I hope you all recover quickly 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

ETA just seen your post above 👍🏻 I do love the barn set ups with the outdoor space they have over there. Definitely get that drink!
 
Beautiful barn.

The commute's a bitch, but I had a similar commute for a very long time, like eight years, because it was the best thing for that horse at that time. When I had to leave that yard (long story), and a better option happened within 20 minutes of my flat (where I am now), I took it, but you do what you have to do, sometimes, even when it sucks.

I still can't believe the barn manager put a youngster with known health issues in a paddock with something who has a bad rap for aggression.
 
Ohh the new place looks fab! Much better for you not to have to worry about what’s going on. Such bad luck but you’d always have a slightly niggle that something was going to happen if you weren’t around. Hope you can relax a bit now and get that drink.
 
In her defense (if deserved) I could see the horse was a grumpy old man over the fence but I thought he was a fair grump and actually it would be good for Atlas to have a boss. What he did was unreal though I’ve truly never seen something like it. Atlas went to the gate and this horse saw he was in a corner and made a bee line for him, it was like a calculated predator, he didn’t even approach just went, turned and kicked the living daylights out of him. Barn manager says whilst he’s for sure the boss and there has been some “trouble with the herd dynamics” he’s never done anything that bad that was backed up by others that his behaviour was particularly extreme, but those others also said they’d been campaigning to have him removed for a while. The barn manager has checked in on Atlas and did apologise sincerely but I haven’t heard a word from the owner and his son about my poor dog.

Horses are horses and they will always do shocking things but when you combine that with an aggressive dog that the barn owners son couldn’t even apologise for (his argument was that Pepper wasn’t bleeding- yeh because my partner literally had to wrestle/whack the dog to get it off her).

The whole thing was just horrible and for now we all need a safe place and it sucks how far away he is but I feel very comfortable he’s got full care there. Just got a video from the owner who’s checking on him herself right now.

God that sounds horribly stressful. Poor Pepper, she is such a sweetheart!!

I think you did the right thing moving. The commute is a pain in the ass but with your work travel etc, you need to have him somewhere where you can trust they will look after him properly in your absence. I hope he isn’t feeling too sore today.
 
I get you do not want to sue or anything but it would be awful if it happened to another horse. They need to be aware of how bad the other horse is and not turn him out with other horses. If you are paying good money for your horse to be looked after he shouldnt be turned out with a known bully! I get horses are horses but this sounds a lot more than just normal horse dynamics.
I hope Atlas and Pepper feel better soon.

Accidents happen, but the YM could have reassured you that the horse in question would not be turned out there again and they could have offered to cover any vet bills. The dog owner could have also reassured you that his dog would not be off lead again, now he knows it to be aggressive. It doesn't sound like they want to deal with the problems, so I think you are better off out of there.
 
I have nothing to add that hasn’t already been said, but I’m truly gutted for you @Michen like you said you needed a safe place to land and they let you down. I really hope this new place is that for you and you can all start to process and recover!
 
Could the new yard be less than 50 mins away when you don’t have a trailer in tow?
Fingers crossed Atlas isn’t too sore.

In response to the comment earlier about getting a body worker to him, I’d not want to be doing that for a good week or two. He’s going to be bruised, and I would find bodywork painful over bruises.
It may be something he benefits from in the future, but personally I’d want those bruises to heal first.

This, when I had a fall & injured my si I couldn’t have physio for a couple of weeks and was told to rest and take painkillers. Assume same applies with horses

So sorry to read this Michen, the new place sounds better and it’s worth the journey if you can trust them to look after him when you are working. I kept my horse just over an hour away as I wanted flat turnout , she was old and arthritic, and after the first couple of days driving I got used to it so maybe you will find the same..good luck and hope this is the last of your problems 🤞
 
It might not be as bad as you think. I've had a horse so similar but almost somersault. I thought there would be broken bones and torn tendons. Nope. A couple of days being a bit stiff, physio and totall back to normal. I still cant quite believe it years and years later.
 
My beloved, gentle floyd got attacked a couple of years back, somewhere on here theres photos of him, it was one of the most awful things I've ever been through. He does still have physical issues from it, but his gorgeous, kind, sunny personality never even flickered. He has no issue with other dogs and has never bothered at all. I was and am still amazed, but hopefully pepper is the same. Dogs are amazing animals.

I was lucky to have a cheap and good farrier (I know shocking!) who was only $250 for all the way around now in paying roughly the same in £ and I’m cackling at the prices like this is nothing 😂 I was expecting to pay around 400-500 cause that’s his package back home (hock arthritis and he’s a princess so all the cushion) I do miss my good pitchfork though. Had a fancy handle and was tough!

Gah I just read through what happened that’s terrifying and terrible. Even if they would ensure that horse wouldn’t be out with him again the fact that an off leash dog is allowed to roam that attacks other animals would make me worry it would eventually attack the horses and that’s something to avoid completely. It sucks how far this is but it gives you a safe place and you can watch to see if something else comes up. With how you described her also she’s probably able to tell you if a barn is outright crazy or not. Good barn owners will cause while its nice to have someone stay good barns aren’t lacking in boarders so it’s not a major thing if you leave for understandable reasons.
 
Oh for sure no reassurances that the horse would be removed. I don’t think for one moment that will happen because “he’s never done anything like that before”.

I didn’t realise st the time that the dog belonged to the owners son. He was awful and couldn’t have cared less. The wife was very apologetic but I’m afraid I was furious, I’m not sure I’ve ever yelled at someone quite like that! The dog was bizarre it came up to Pepper and was wagging and seemed fine and then absolutely snapped out of no where. Like a switch was flipped.

They have a young toddler and I’m afraid I told her I thought she was a terrible mother for allowing a dog like that, that was capable of turning like that, anywhere near a kid. But frankly I mean it. A dog that can do that to another dog IMO could just as easily do that to a kid.

It’s 3.20am and I’m so angry and sad and worried about what I’ll find with Atlas this morning.

Thanks for having our backs guys, Christ I really thought I could be posting nicer stuff on this thread not constant drama.
