if I was op I would get a second opinion as it’s very Rare for a mare to be due December/January naturally . Most of the time theses mares need medication to get back into session to be breed and to have a due date this early.

Don’t worry too much about the udder for a maiden mare, she may or may not get one. One thing I may suggest however (although it may not be possible) is to trim some of the booby hair away around the area. Foals will lick and suck around for a long time and it’s not unheard of that they will irritate the hair/suck wet hair/get hairballs. In summer this wouldn’t be as much of an issue but at this time of year with shedding season just around the corner it’s worth thinking about. Many mini/Shetland owners give their broods a “brood” clip taking all the hair from the udder area and around the stifle area. I could just be overthinking things tho ?

It's not that unusual for a healthy mare to be in season in winter, the only thing that's really unusual is for them to be near a stallion and not already pregnant by him.

Have you read the thread? I think the diagnosis is pretty sound, and the foal is being seen moving a lot, so there's something badly wrong with the mare if she's not pregnant.

Yes I did but I not saying she is not in foal I meant that the vet could have gotten the due dates wrong . It would just save op being on foal watch for months at a time .

We didn’t have a due date pony was bought in foal and the vet couldn’t date just said 3rd trimester

the only info we have is that she caught before mid March as there were no stallions at the last yard so must have been with previous owner which we believe to have been travellers

How did I miss this thread? I'd have sworn from the original pictures that you just had a tubby young horse, I'm rubbish at this. 😂

Looking forward to seeing foaly!
