Bought unseen problems returning

Ozzy was bought to help with my mental health and arthritis. With my last horse I found my knees strengthened since I took up riding and lessons. I could get up stairs easier than used to. More often than not the only time I got out was when I went out riding or to the stable. Due to my health issues I am usually very fatigued which makes doing things and being positive very hard. I often suffer with anaemia also and at the moment I have my second bout of Vitamin D deficiency all of which can also make you tired. I have an ectopic heart beat, under active thyroid, gastritis, arthritis, psoriasis, as well as mental health issues. It's no wonder that at times I feel like giving up. I had to retire early due to my ill health about 13 years ago. I don't often envy people anything but I do envy those with good health. So something like this can really put me in a bad place. Believe it or not I am actually quite a strong person I have had to be so as not to take the step of quitting from life. I lost both my parents over the last 5 years and have never really got over it. I watched my mum dying of copd behind for the last year of her life all the while dad was getting dementia and ended up in care after mum died. So I think that explains why I have had a melt down over this it's just another bad thing in my life on top of other bad things.

So that's me warts and all. Please be gentle I know many of you have been and I appreciate that.
I'm really glad you came back on here today 🥰 ❤️

Welcome to the forum! 🎉

You've had what might be described as a less than ideal first impression of here, but you're back again so I assume it's not put you off too much. You really ARE a strong person.

Whilst you're here, have a look at the other areas of the forum, in particular The Club House: you may find some people who can support/advise for some of your issues, or indeed, you may be able to support others with some of the same issues as you.

In The Club House there is a long-running thread called 'The safe place to feel down thread' which is where people can post about things that are troubling them, without judgement/comments/criticism from others. It's a tremendously supportive place, where many people have shared their stories in a similar manner to your post. You may find many kindred spirits on there, and you'll certainly get to know some of us a little better and see a more pleasant side of the forum.

I haven't read the whole thread. All I will say is the dealer's T&Cs don't allow them to avoid their obligations under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. you have a right to reject and to get your money back where the horse is not fit for purpose or not as described.

when i moved lily to the yard we’re on now, when i first put her in the stable she went absolutely bonkers - she was on box rest so couldn’t go out, and she actually kicked out and caught me, she’s never done anything like that before.

within a day she’d settled and went back to being a darling, this was the 3rd time i’d moved her if you include when i bought her, and she’d been an angel from day 1! she’s very settled on the yard now and has been from maybe day 2, so it just goes to show you really can’t predict how they’ll be sometimes.

i hope today goes/has gone well for you, i would assume if his behaviour has been less than gentlemanly you’d have been informed by now!

If you had you’d have seen that we’ve covered the likelihood of that meaning they get any money back even if they won in court several times already, ergo zero.

I’m impressed you think it wouldn’t have come up in a dealer thread with 450 replies.

I don't mind having a moan but I am generally not one for opening up as I have done today I think I was just at the end of my tether and I think it does good to explain why I react to some things the way I do. I am definately not one to do therapy or speak to professionals apart from the Dr's and that's with regards to my medication. They have suggested seeing someone but it's not for me.

Oh I know what my rights are but I also get the impression I am not likely to get a refund. He still insists his trumped up terms and conditions stand. I have not spoken to him for a few days and I don't intend to again. I have tried CAB and Trading Standards but they are not the easiest to get hold of and Trading Standards send you to CAB if you try and fill on an online form out. Even this cannot be done until Friday pm through to Monday strangely. I sent my solicitor an email and have received no reply. Why can't these people be there for the job they are supposed to do. My only other option is BHS but you have to be a Gold member and it's expensive.

I went to the stables and they said they haven't had any issues turning him out or bringing him back in. When I went to the field he was in he came over to check us out, had some apple, got chased away by the resident older gent in the field and went back to munching his grass. The YO has said if I want them to do some work with him then they can do that obviously not free of charge. Did I want to do some work with him tomorrow on my riding lesson, not riding him but some ground work. Is that too soon or a good idea. If not I will just have my usual lesson on one of their horses.

I think it sounds like he's settling well and that doing some ground work with him is a fantastic idea and will give you confidence and tools to use to help him and you

BHS Gold membership is only 8.50 a month.
You could set up a monthly DD then cancel after the month.
Their legal line is really good.

I would say have your usual lesson on one of the RS horses but just keep going up as frequently as you are able and seeing him with an open mind and making interactions positive, find his itchy spots etc.

The more positive interactions with him you have the less you will hold against him. Don't underestimate how some horses feed off emotion, so if you are having a particularly bad day then just stay away!

As he becomes more settled then you can start to gradually introduce the maintenance stuff, feet, jabs, teeth, worming etc. Rome wasn't built in a day.

It would probably be worth saving a few pennies to have the yard do the initial riding for you.

That all sounds positive; if your usual riding lesson is good for your mental health I would say carry on with it and maybe see if you could do something with him afterwards? Potentially with a member of staff from the riding school.

I'd probably have a lesson on one of theirs to cheer yourself up (understandable) & then wander down to the field to see if you can have a chat with your new boy.

if you can be around to see them turn out / bring in it might give you confidence that he's not going to be a horror forever.

I think they have another lesson after mine so will be busy.

I am quite happy to forgo the lesson and do some work with him. We won't do anything too strenous probably just some leading etc.

Groundwork with help sounds like a good idea but no harm in giving him more time to settle first.

But the membership is for the year, so even if you cancel before the year is up you still owe the full amount. They don't sell one month's membership.
OP if you have no other public liability insurance BHS Gold is a good idea, I have it but we don't insure our horses for vet bills, so it's different.

Glad things seem to be settling. Re what you do tomorrow don't worry about what might come across as conflicting advice - people are suggesting one or the other because both options are totally fine: Work with him on the ground with some help, or have your usual riding lesson on a RS horse. Just do whatever you feel more drawn to.

Oh. Why do the adverts say only 8.50 a month, seems a bit pointless if you can't actually pay 8.5 a month :-/

I was going to do some ground work I don't feel confident enough getting on him again.

That makes sense. I think gaining confidence in handling him while seeing others ride him, and him staying relaxed and well behaved, can be very helpful when you have had a scare with a horse. You can rationalise it all you want but until those experiences ae counteracted by more positive ones, then they can often stick in the mind.

That is all sounding much more positive. 😊Can you decide tomorrow when you actually get there. Sort of see how you feel about either option. I wouldn't say either is too soon if you have a good instructor there helping you, but very much depends on how you are feeling on the day?

it is an excellent idea to do some ground work. Ask them to start off by showing you an exercise and demonstrating. That way you will see that Ozzy can do it without hurting anyone and also exactly how to do it.

Try and do simple things so that by the end of the lesson you can lead him say up the school and back, turn him either way and back him up.
If you feel confident enough get them to tie him up for you outside his stable and then start gently going round grooming him with just your hands, bit of massage. Just do some of the safe bits if it worries you. You don't have to move out of your comfort zone.

You sound to be a lot more positive today so give it a go tomorrow and let us know how you get on. Do you have a camera or mobile? if so a picture of the gorgeous Ozzy would be very welcome.

I am happy to try working with him but don't want to push him if he's not ready. But I have spoken to the YO and we have given a timescale for improvement so the sooner we work with him the better.
