Breaking news re evolution

No no no.

This theory is like saiyng that if humans never did anything with their hair we'd eventually go bald.

It's like saying that if every man in a long line of men had their arms cut off at birth, eventually their kids would be born without arms. There's no mechanism for it work.

It's wrong

(or is that the point and I missed the joke? :o )

If you bred horses to have smaller/really bad hooves by breeding from horses with bad feet then yeah, probably eventually you could get to having no hooves. But that's nothing like what Lamarckianism says.

Shils I've often thought you should have a career in writing - TV or radio definitely, maybe Julie Birchill type stuff in a paper. It would keep you out of mischief, maybe :)

Out of mischief? Are you joking? It'd be the perfect stage for her to drive the rest of society mad - not just the selected few 'biters' on here.

Shils there is the notion that Einstein's theory on gravity isn't absolutely the only possible one - it's just the best one at the moment. There are undercurrents involving 'string theory' (I won't bore you with details ;) ) and it may well change a lot of stuff we all take for granted.

And about body parts getting longer if they need to? Why have giraffes not developed retractible necks I wonder. They would be even handier. Bet you thought I was going elsewhere with that one...

My oh says that some small breeds of dog will soon be born with no legs, because thay are carried everywhere! :D

They are starting already, i remember seeing an episode of the dog whisperer where a chihuahua was born with no front legs. The owner had made it a kart to zoom around in

This is what I would like to see

We should all write to a feed company to sponsor it! It will be in thier interest and we could supply the subjects!

We should gets Shils to write the abstract now as she is by far the best with words. :D

Not true at all - Lamarck was spot on.

A stallion at our yard grows a fifth leg every time he's in the warm-up ring before a competition. He has obviously evolved it over time to aid his balance and improve his performance as he has a tendancy to swing it from side to side as he moves.

;)

amazing! I wanted a 5 legged horse so uch after reading this that i went out to have a word with the hairy ones in the barn and hey presto i got one now too!!! Its all about wanting to adapt to environment, happens quickly when you want to! Im gonna go speak to the sheep about growing silk instead of wool now......

Or, actually, we could just get the farrier onto half the population of the New Forest ponies and see how it goes...

heck, why stop there????

Pahahahahahahahah

Pahahahahahahahahaha.............

I am going to test this theory but walloping myself about the head with a rubber pipe and then with a metal hammer, both with identical load bearing surface, i will let you know how i get on later :D

OMG you have GOT to tell us how that goes :D

My god this thread has me in stitches!!! Genius!!!!

I especially liked the stallion evolving a leg for balance lol- classic!!

Just absolutely brilliant. Made my night :D:D

Yes, but presumably your head will squash into the rubber pipe, increasing the contact area and invalidating the study.
Note I am not unkind enough to say that some barefooters are so hard-headed that their skulls might sink into the metal of the hammer...
Besides, how will you produce reliable conclusions when concussed?
After consideration, I think it would be better to do the 'Grand Piano v Use a Name' experiment. :p :D
S :D

Off topic a wee bit, but string theory aims to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity and has its roots in Einstein's work.

Have you been watching the Big Bang Theory? Tut tut :D

Gosh, I can't wait for horses to evolve to be born with shoes on. Save me £60 every time! :p:D

Loving this post... it's made even funnier by the people who just don't get a joke :D:p

I LOVE the Big Bang theory and I look forward to seeing how many of the geek references I get from Battlestar Gallactica to the woods of Azeroth!!! :D
Proud to admit I am a total graphic novels, MMORPGs, sci-fi, mild Asperger's geek! :D

My meagre knowledge of physics comes from teaching intro to the philosophy of science. The shift between Newtonian physics and Einstein's relativity is kind of the main example of Kuhnian paradigm shift, and string theory kind of comes up in this context as a grand unifying theory. But that's about as far as my knowledge extends!!!

The world of biology has known for some time that Lamark was right, at least to a certain degree - the field is known as epigenetics, and is a current research funding hotspot and very much the fashionable area of Biology atm. I went to a conference which spent a whole day on it - they're all reproduction mad, so they spoke at length about the genetics of the egg being altered given the environment into which the dam is exposed and therefore the offspring will grow up in. It's also seen in adult animals to a certain degree as far as I can remember too.

Maybe you could have mention this BEFORE i undertook my study!

Anyway back from the old "krankenhouse" and can i just say what a wonderfull service they provide out here!!

Results were conclusive though, hammers ********** hurt :D
