Brecon Sales 15/06/25

Lot 101A, ROR, £500. Same reason? Possibly a risk?
It’s a very dodgy buy. I’d bet good money that it was turned away because it’s unridable, lame or both, not because of a ‘lack of stables’. And why did it need a holiday? (I just checked on racingpost and it finished racing years ago, so it’s not that it’s been let down after racing.)

Plus it’s off the warranty which makes it seem dodgier, it wasn’t in the catalogue so no one came to the sales specifically looking to buy it, and it’s a bay TB in a sales where coloureds and cobs usually go for the most. TBs never go for much money, even the nicely turned out Shade Oak ones.

The coloured cobs are going for more. Don’t think I’d risk a ROR even as a companion, I’ve seen too many cost their owners far too much time/money.

Shade Oak go there!? 😳

She went for £3200, @Clodagh

It is a heart breaking watch, especially the scared youngsters.

213, Welsh D filly, gorgeous looking horse, but the vendor!! Bloke must have brought a positive fleet of lorries with him!

But they're in and out in no time at all. They'll be off to their new homes before they know it. I think it all looks OK.

Is it usual for breeders to sell off mares with foals at foot at this time of year or is this in advance of an expensive winter?
There are serious fodder issues now so I suspect anyone with fragile grazing/overstocked or feeling the pinch of the cost of living will be selling now rather than in the autumn. Hay and straw may be very hard to buy at any price. Brecon attracts vendors nationwide and I think the numbers this month reflect those concerns.

There's a lot coming from my part of the world (Bucks) which surprised me - but the grass / hay situation is dire here so I can see why breeders are shifting stock.

Yes, but I suspect responsible breeding isn't the approach used...I hope we are not all watching a welfare crisis if we have a difficult winter.
Given his history, plus however many more of this kind of breeder is out there, I wouldn’t be amazed. I’m out of touch with hay prices, but if we have a hard winter, I think the irresponsible ones will be trying to offload yet more.

2 years ago I paid £30 for a large 3 string hay bale. Its £40 from my regular supplier this year but more worryingly he won't be able to top me up in Jan which is when I usually run short - so I think breeders are offloading early (good breeders as well as dubious)

Currently small bales of hay are £8.95 collected from local large ag store. Good quality though...
Haven't seen that price there since early 2011. Usually between £5.50 to £6.25 all year round.
