Brecon Sales 15/06/25

2 years ago I paid £30 for a large 3 string hay bale. Its £40 from my regular supplier this year but more worryingly he won't be able to top me up in Jan which is when I usually run short - so I think breeders are offloading early (good breeders as well as dubious)
I have heard of people having to pay £50 for a bale of straw recently...with water, fodder and bedding issues whole flocks and herds are being sold/considering being sold as they are losing all value on the hoof. I'd want another horse to keep like a hole in the head!

Shade Oak go there!? 😳
They started coming this year I think - I don't remember them in previous years - and have brought at least one horse to every sale at Worcester and Brecon over the past couple months, often 15 handers, but sometimes bigger. It's a weird contrast seeing them there as you've got your dodgy dealer cases, and then next to them a pristinely turned out TB with hay and water and its handler by its side the whole morning.

Shame to see today's two go to Dunbar, when they'd be worth a decent chunk of money if given time and then ridden away for polo.

God, that's a depressing watch 😐 why are there numerous random people stood in the ring
Bid spotters, horse handlers, and some of the dealers who are well-known to the auction sometimes pop into the ring for no apart reason.

I leased a share in a Shade Oak mate, she didn’t stand up to racing so they took her back for breeding (I know, I know). She was stunning, it’s an awful thought that she may have ended up there.

Is it usual for breeders to sell off mares with foals at foot at this time of year or is this in advance of an expensive winter?

I've noticed an unusual amount on most selling websites, lots of studs seem to be 'downsizing' - can only assume due to hay shortage

FWIW, afaik all the Shade Oak horses that go to Brecon/Worcester are unbroken 2-3 year olds, so I very much doubt your mare will end up there.

Yes, I think so and whilst Brecon represents a pretty respectable market, there are smaller, more rural markets especially in Wales that have had poorer stock going through them. Hay, grazing and bedding as well as inflation more generally suggest a degree of stock dumping in preparation for a leaner Autumn and Winter has been taking place. It would be a brave or foolish buyer 'investing' in horses ATM but that won't stop the TB and Sport horse breeding programmes...

As an aside the knacker trade has seen a significant increase in horses in the last few weeks :( Our local fallen stock company usually sees maybe a couple of horses a month but the last few weeks, they've taken 6-8 a week apparently! I guess this is the time of year for it but I also think people are disposing of more horses that are unsellable or that they don't want to over-winter or continue with veterinary treatment (or even keep for the next couple of months). I find that rather sad though I know the fallen stock people are excellent at their job.

Several comments including one from a sanctuary saying they’ll have him. He’ll go for very little, I imagine. Hope he gets a soft landing. ❤️
Yes some local Facebook pages near me are sharing his post asking people to buy him to retire and a few people have commented they will try and get him so fingers crossed 🤞

She's nicely bred and very pretty. I wonder why she didn't sell?
She was the second lot in of the day and went unsold at 1400. I'm not au fait with Welshie trade, don't know if the seller was just being greedy or is 1400 not much for her breeding and colour?

Yes unsold I guess the owners wanted more? I’ve no idea what the going rate for a 2 year old D would be but others on the day sold for around that…perhaps as palomino they wanted more. I’m tempted to message and ask her price l, purely for research purposes 🤣

Just spotted this post on Facebook regarding the 25 year old pony going to Llanybydder. His owner doesn't seem to want to sell privately and he will have a £1000 reserve which he's unlikely to make.

Fingers crossed he lands on his hooves at a lovely home or that EMW are able to secure him.
For goodness sake, perhaps the owner thinks there will be a bidding war for him??
