Looking a lot better than a week ago!

Currently on 61 with entires closing today. Before anyone says that’s low - it was around 65 last year, and with the Euros only finishing yesterday it’s still a decent field!

Oli and Harry will have to drop at least one ride. So it’s still just mid 60s, which is a pretty poor field IMO. I love Burghley and have been regularly for nearly 40 years, but not sure if it’s worth the journey and price. It’s such a shame it’s always affected by various team championships. But I think entries to our 5* events are becoming a worry in general. They’ve gone down as ticket prices rise.

The number of entries at Burghley have been relatively stable for the last 10 years, which considering we've had Brexit and a pandemic, isn't that bad imho!

2017 - 61
2018 - 72
2019 - 67
2022 - 52

I probably haven’t been for over six years (people keep being hospitalised for Burghley!) but it always felt more towards 80. We’re those actual runners or entries? Anyway I’m sure you will still have fun. Hope all of the 67 get there. It just feels smaller to me. (52 last year, wow! My dad was on end of life care last year so I didn’t pay much attention. No wonder 67 sounds good this year)

I took figures to include even those who were eliminated at first trot up.

We, too, are regular attendees (only missed one since 1994) and were initially disappointed at the big drop in entries last year. However, increasing the interval between starters to five minutes on cross-country day went some way to making up for the lower number of starters as it made it easier to get from fence to fence/get refreshments etc. without missing a horse.
On a more general point, I share your concern about entries in our 5* events. I do worry that the shortening of the Olympic cross-country tracks and - in particular - the downgrading of the World Championships cross-country to 4* leaves the 5* events a bit out on a limb.
And, of course, Burghley's timing means it is always affected by the proximity of a major championship or the Olympics.

Oh that’s good that they’ve spread out the Xc times a bit, I hate it if you’ve not time to get round and watch a horse or two at each fence.

I don’t know about this year but they certainly ran at five minute intervals last year. I suppose it will depend on just how many start on the Saturday.

Her Facebook page has an update. Doesn’t sound particularly pleasant!
Meh she will be back after 2 weeks. The last one was supposed to be severe and she was back eventing after 3 weeks - not quite the injury it was first made out to be. She never wears a BP out xc schooling…. As has her own course at home.
