It is interesting how news is shared and the views which emanate from it - I was talking to an NHS Manager today and he commented that Bubby Upton's surgery pushed a 'good few' people down the list for things like hip and knee replacements. Further he asked me if competing rider had private insurance for medical intervention in case of accident. I was slightly shocked as the general tone was that 'we' should pay in case of riding injuries as they are in some way self-inflicted?
Hold my hand up to a couple of breaks over the past 45 years which the NHS dealt with brilliantly. How deep does the belief go that we should not be a drain on the NHS in our participation of sport?

I asked family members and was shocked that they are split!

It will have been triaged on importance and she has enough money to go private if need be. How far do you go? Obesity is IMO a bigger drain in NHS and a lot of that is preventable. I have spent a lot of time in cancer ward this year and most people were 80 years old +. Is it ethical to spend so much money on people with a low chance of living many more years? Most of them were incapacitated anyway? What about criminals getting organs? Or the hundreds of thousands spent on niche stuff like gender reassignment, boob reductions, stomach bands, etc?

She had a spinal injury and needed decompression and stabilisation...that's pretty urgent! As in if not fixed urgently she could be paralysed. More urgent than a routine hip replacement in any case. They do triage for a reason...its a pretty serious injury, more than just a fracture.

I guess the question is where does it stop? Do we then make anyone with any sporting or hobby injury go private? Football, rugby, golf, hiking, climbing? Where do you stand with cycling eg. would the NHS treat you if your were hit by a car during your daily commute, but not if you were out training for a triathlon? Or with horses would the NHS treat an injury incurred from a horse at work, but not if it were my own personal horse? It's just far too complicated!

Technically Bubby's was a workplace injury, not one incurred partaking in a hobby as it might be for you or I. Theoretically treating her on the NHS is no different to treating racing staff, or plumbers, or tree surgeons who are injured at work.

Private will never do anything life threatening...it hasn't got the skill or capacity for it. If you have a hip replacement done in a private hospital (or anything!) then get quite unwell after...you'll be packed off to the local NHS hospital quick smart! Private can't handle anything that needs lots of monitoring or interventions.

This with bells and knobs on.

The NHS handles emergencies and intensive care etc much better than private hospitals, if they do them at all. You may still yet be operated on by a consultant with an extensive £££s private practice, but under the NHS.

Or be operated on by a NHS consultant that is doing private work! Private doesn't do intensive care or anything like it. If you're really sick you want NHS care!

It's pretty good to be honest, Badminton tv quality was much better this year than last year...if you like dressage I think it's worth it too. XC day it's really good, better than what you see in person anyway!
