Calling all connemara people!

E19 - just seen your pic she is lovely I think my boy will end up with the same colouring was she darker and has greyed out?

GCG - aw he looks like he has a great personality and a very pretty and unusual colour - I don't think I have seen that variation on a connie (and I have looked at 8 different grey coloured ponies this week alone!)

Una- thank you. Hope I have as much fun over the yrs as you have had with your boy.

KS - thank you for that reassurance I was looking for temperament above anything else - it would be nice to be able to go out in the high winds and not be ejected (I love my TBs honestly). I saw so many nice connies I could have easily bought 6 of them - you are so lucky you have 14 (though I don't envy you having to groom them if they are all grey!). What do you with them? And do you have any pics and stats you can post?

Trix98 - I agree with those sizes as seems to be the consensus here. Thanks for posting those pics - I totally love Bird and her grumpy little face and angry ears (I like the grumpy ones I find them so amusing when they put on the evil pony face!). The foals are adorable too, makes me really want a foal next time. I am a total (re)convert to the breed though I might change my mind next wk! What do you do with yours?

P79 - do you know the breeding of your pony and your YOs? I have recently been reading up on the breed lines so interested to see what various offspring look like.

SO19- vet didn't think he would make more than 14.2hh and I don't mind if he does or doesn't - anything under 15.2hh is a pony for me! A few producers were interested in him as he would have qualified for all the junior classes this summer and offered seller more for him but seller didn't want him going to a professional jumper. He should do well showing but that's not my thing really. There were loads between the 13.2hh - 14hh mark but of course they are snapped up by professionals for the season as they can be sold on for €15k if they do well. If he is everything th say then he is a complete bargain - you can't put a price on something that makes you happy! Except may €136m winning the euromillions!

Ahh welcome to the club! I am technically only a part member because my pony is a Connie X but still ;)
He isn't actually a pony anymore, he is 15 hands now!! :O I have always had him in 5'9 rugs, they are a bit too big for him but he is only a youngster to he will fill out.. or at least he better had!! ;)

Here is my very special, very handsome but terribly unusal boy! :D

Have had some experience of connies being tricky to saddle fit. They seem to have big shoulders. I would try to find some thing secondhand incase he changes. Mine isn't fat but he needs a v wide saddle. Mine has been dream horse and best friend for twelve years

Yes she was roughly the same as your boy then gradually greyed out. Now in winter fully clipped she's white :( then the dapples come back for summer :) .

Hate to tell you saddle also went from medium to xw!

OP - I dont know, I can ask, they did the usual trick though...saw something in him as a foal.

Your boy is gorge! in fact looks very similar...same colour and build. YO turns out hers with tail plaited, otherwise he is so used to baths he doesn't get rugged too much.

I will definately have a connie again, my mare is very special (only a cross but its the connie face and eyes that look at me!)

Re the saddle....my girl was fitted (by nathianel underwood) with a Bates 17'' Cair GP due to the shoulder movement. The Bates is a 'large' 17'', the seat area isn't large but apparently the area on the horse is. It would possible be too big..but if your interested PM me as I have recently started advertising it.

Bird seemed to have that expression perminantly on her face! She was a misery  They weren't mine although I owned a Conne x (With what, we haven't a clue!). The woman who owned them simply let me ride them in return of mucking out and general helping on the yard :)
She initially bought the stallion to breed with her Conne mares but he decided he didn't fancy the podgy ponies and instead fell head over heals for 2 of her TB's, so instead he produced 4 very lovely Conne x TB's :p In fact, the picture of Holly and her foal was completely unexpected as he never paid her any attention and her Mother always chased him off when he went anywhere near! We just thought she was getting podgy.. oops
As for the others we simply schooled, hacked and popped a few small courses. They really do turn their hoof to anything!

Yay you finally got your connie! He's beautiful and you HAVE to show him - he'd make a beautiful SHP\WHP even if its just at local level...plus you know you want to jump him!

LD - he's lovely, what an unusual colour. I dont think I have seen a connie like him - all of my options were various shades of grey (steel grey, rose grey, fleabitten, grey, white grey etc etc) and one bay which I didnt like. How old is he now?

Small - what saddle are you in at the moment?

E19 - I think she is a lovely colour so I am not bothered about him greying out (he is going to be difficult to keep clean regardless!)

P79 - thanks - I have seen those mane/tail bags etc I think I might have to invest. Does she keep him "natural"? I have always had everything pulled so was planning to do the same with the pony as I am not planning to show.

T98 - you were very lucky to have such great ponies to ride. I was looking for a small allrounder so I thought a connie would be the best option as, like you say, then can pretty much turn their hoof to anything and hopefully he will enjoy doing a bit of everything.

Hi yes, in all the excitement I hadnt even told people - just announced it on here! Hopefully will do a bit of everything with him and will get him out a bit this yr.

How are you and the new boy?

I have recently bought what I think is mostly Connemara. Passport doesn't say, it's all "unknown breeding". Vetting cert says ISH but I know that term is used very lightly! He looks like mostly connie. He's supposed to be 15hh (according to passport) but I'd say more like 14.3hh. He's just turned 6 so am hoping he might go up another inch, and he has plenty of filling out and muscling up to do yet.

He's in a 6ft rug, cob to full size bridle (cob size is done up on the biggest holes but full size needs extra holes punching!).

And he's ace :D

CC - he most likely will go up an inch.

Looks as though I am going to have to wait a little longer to join the club - transporter just called to say lorry has broken down and wont be fixed for a few days so he wont be picked up until Friday and delivered Friday night/sat morning. Am contemplating taking horsebox over to Ireland and collecting him myself at this rate.

Oh how frustrating.

Sorry, have only just seen this, i was wondering how he was getting on. Roll on Friday...........
