Just wondering really, if a non pure t b could ever be in a race and if not whom decided this.

It's quite funny in today's society, I am expecting a campaign as it is bound to affront someone in our society at this moment I time.

Do you mean in a race with TBs or just in general? Because there is Purebred Arabian racing, which I think comes under the BHA and is sometimes on the same card as TB racing.

We used to have a member on this forum (Angrove?) who bred high % TB's that were tobiano (so skewbalds and piebalds) and raced them. I don't think they ran well but they were allowed to race.

Hey thanks for that, I wonder if that was more of a colour project ? Off to check what the lowest % tb genes would be sllowed to run in the same race as a full t b

Yes they were definitely breeding for colour. IIRC they were very passionate about it. The horses were lovely and I'd have had one, just not to race. :)

I was thinking the same thing. Some race horses look like they are Irish sport horse they look bigger boned than a Tb should be. my horse is a Irish sport horse and is big boned and some of the race horse looks extremely like her in build and color . It crazy but it wouldn’t surprise me if are breeding them with other breeds and trying to pass them off as race horses .

I suspect that there is more variety within the TB breed than you realise. Also some 'ISH' are really very high % TB.

A flat, sprint bred three year old is not going to have the same body type as a National Hunt horse that goes over the big fences.

I used to ride a US bred horse, so bred to run on dirt tracks and he was massive. The big joke with him was that he probably wouldn't have fit in the starting stalls over here (he was retired from racing when I knew him).

To be able to race in the Derby or the Grand National the horse needs to be at least 7/8 tb. The coloureds were bred specifically for colour and were totally useless as racehorses but yes they bred them through with enough TB blood to race.

There is a TB stallion from America called I Was Framed who is an Overo and produces coloured stock but none of them are very good. It's more to catch the eye than for talent.

There is also Arab racing and whilst Arabs are a lot slower than TB's they can race against each other in bin end racing. It gives the really really naff tb's somewhere to race.

The Shetland Pony Grand National is very popular and happens at events all over the country.

Pony racing the ponies can be of any breed so long as they are under a certain height and the riders under a certain age.

Donkey racing, Camel racing and Heavy Horse racing is more of a spectacle for special events than a routine thing.

I *think* Hunter members races at Point To Points can have anyone enter them on anything if the hunt master deems you safe enough.

Well you learn something new every day, I did not realise 7/8ths could technically run in top flight races!!

Has any 7/8th ever won a big race do you know?

I don’t think hunt members races for non tbs exist anymore. There used to be races over walls etc for them but they’ve all been consigned to history.

Many many times over jumps. Including Sprinter Sacre - He was AQPS as was Kauto Star I think.

On the flat - probably but I am not as interested in that side of things lol!

In France they have AQPS (Autre que pur sang) with a separate stud book that are not full tbs that race. There'll be one strand of AQPS or Selle Francais in their ancestry but if you looked at the pedigree they are a very high percentage tb and been bred to race for a few generations so it's a technicality really. Quevega was one, I don't know if her foals born here are registered as tb but in France they would not be.

Just double checked on SIRE and Quevega is actually registered as a Selle Francais.

They don't have the low rated TB races on Arab cards any more, haven't had them for 3 or 4 years. They never did race against each other.
