Can you REALLY afford your horse(s)?

The horse is of Olympic standard, which is worth more

nope, you can insure a horse for death and theft if it's not yours, so long as you have a witnessed loan agreement. Personally, I like to ensure vets fees are covered myself, after all it'd be ME calling MY vet out and I'd want to be 100% that the readies are there should the worst happen.

I can't afford all the things I'd LIKE for the ponios, but we can scrape together enough for all they really NEED. I think as in other walks of life, the media can convince us that we NEED an awful lot.

Then who gets the money if the horse dies? I can understand the vet fees part....but the death payment?

I can afford everthing my horses needs, but not necessarily everything I would want. Would love a WOW saddle or 2 one for each but have saddles that fit. I own 1 and share 1 with a friend, even if I had to buy her out I would but the sharing works so I dont need to

My horses are my luxury, I wouldn't have them if I couldnt rake up whatever they need. There are a lot of people who have them and can't afford their fees, to me this is unfair.

Yes I can afford my horse, but although I have said that people who cant should not have one, I do feel sorry for them.

If someone cant afford kids you can bet they will have them anyway because they feel it's their right to have a family........ and one day it will be too late.

Isnt it a bit like that with horses too. One day you will be too old to enjoy it all, so as long as the horse does not suffer, I dont think a bit of scrimping and scraping will kill anyone.

I can afford to keep both my horses but they are on DIY, they never go without, I have enough to have lessons and attend the odd show but have very little over for clothes, going out, holidays (haven't had one in years). But I would rather this than not have my horses.

I can afford mine - just! I do have a sharer, but that's because she approached me and asked if she could share my mare. But like lots of the other replies, the cost of having them takes up all my salary and a bit of my hubbie's. And we don't have holidays. And our house needs doing up. And we rarely buy new clothes. But we are all happy and don't want for any essentials!

And you don't have them forever, do you?

My horse gets everything she needs but I drive an x reg car, get my clothes from charity shops, don't have holidays and my social life consists of helping at RC events! Would love to be able to afford transport for my girl but would not put myself in debt to do it.

To insure something, you need to have an 'insurable interest'..ie the owner. If I ever loaned a horse, I would expect the owner to pay the insurance as they would be getting the benefit of any pay out.

I know thats off the subject a bit! Yes, I can happily afford my horses and am not in debt.

My mortgage...well, thats a struggle sometimes!!!

I'm another one who says yes I can afford my horse but I can't afford new clothes, a regular hair-cut, a social life or Christmas pressies for OH!
I did actually buy Jerry with a credit card cheque.
Only cos I was waiting (and waiting .. and waiting) for insurance money from E&L for the death of my previous horse. (Yes E&L DID pay out eventually!!).
I am not in debt now - I hate owing money. (except the mortgage!)

Are you in debt because of your horse?
.......No

Can you afford everything your horse needs?
......Yes but not everything I want !!!

Have you considered selling up/loaning./sharing because of not being able to afford all your horses costs?
..........If I was in that situation I'd have to consider something!

Do you think you shouldnt have a horse if you cant afford all the costs yourself, ie without sharers etc
........ I don't think it'd be a good idea to take on something you can't afford

Would you ever take out a loan to buy a horse?
........No

I wouldn't go (and am not) in debt for my horses. However, I do have a creidt card which I buy everything for them on, but pay of the bill every month in full.

I can afford everything that my horse needs, but not everything that I want (who can)!

Funny that this thread has popped up as I was just reviewing my banking.

I couldnt afford my horse at this point in time myself. I am in an extremely fortunate position in that my father helps me pay for the livery putting £100 a month towards it plus paying for a few odds and ends. My mother doesnt ask for any rent. Tyler doesnt lack in anything he needs. Spoiled boy :P

That will all change once I qualify in a few months and I will be required to and be able to afford everything myself.

I do feel bad about taking money of my parents, but it is on the understanding that some of it will be paid or worked off which I dont have a problem with.

I dont go out, buy myself anything and take my own lunch everywhere lol. Its a bit of a bummer, but worth it when I turn up and see my supposedly grey ID looking a gorgeous black colour with what I could swear is a grin across his face!!!!!

i can afford my horse, its tight but totally possible now i finally earn a more respectable wage with my newish job -started june 07, instead of working two jobs to keep my horse as i did for a year!
i often borrow a little off my OH for odds and sods, but i pay him back on my next payday, my horse is not too expensive to keep really, but she certainly takes a bit of money, but is so worth it

I can afford a horse, although I've just sold my last one and am not planning to buy a new one until the spring. I couldn't always afford one so I waited until I could before buying my first. I wouldn't go into debt to buy one because there's so many unexpected costs that I think that could be a slippery slope !

I do love the way some posters have said things along the line of ........ "I can afford my horse, although I am (or have been) in debt but it's NOT because of my horse". I do get what they're saying...... but technically horse costs are a contributing factor to the overall debt. LOL.

I can afford mine just now, but then I'm still at home and don't pay rent, bills etc! I will just have to afford him, hopefully it'll spur me on to get a better job. I wouldn't get a loan to buy a horse, no way! I couldn't afford him if he was on full livery or competing a lot, but thats not an issue as I wouldn't do either lol.

I said yes to top 2,can afford to get what horse NEEDS am probably in debt(not overly just credit card) because of what I want not need for them

.
Have shared when younger with my sister as only way we could get a horse for any of us.Worked ok luckily enough.
And would consider loan to buy horse but only if I felt it was finacially viable on top of other costs.

I can afford everything for my horse, and would not get into debt for anything that is seen as a non-essential in life. I suppose it is the way I was brought up. I only use credit cards that I can pay off each month etc. Horses are a costly business and you have a living, breathing, eating animal to consider.

I do get very cross with some people on my yard who deprive their horses of a decent haynet at night and moan like hell when they cannot turn horses out because it costs them extra hay. If you cannot afford to adequately feed your horse you should not have one. Somethings cannot be scrimped on!!

I wouldn't take on a horse knowing I had to have a sharer to cover basic cost but having got a horse, sometimes life changes mean you can no longer afford something. I often say I would work the red light district rather than give up my horse!!!
When things change you have to find solutions.
Oh and yes I can afford my horse, no loans, no sharers, no waiting for stuff that's needed. I did have to wait until I was almost 50 yrs old before getting my first horse though.

Ditto. I can afford full livery and lessons and extras and everything he needs. But I don't have much left over to save and so other things in life are meagre. I can afford everything now, but me and OH hope to buy a much bigger house next year (he earns much more than I do). I am extremely lucky that my OH is understanding about my horse and is prepared to make good the mortgage difference himself. I feel extremely guilty about that though, so im my mind I can't afford everything as I feel everything we buy should split 50/50 between us. Though I'd still be hard up as he earns that much more
