Never been in debt til now for horses but my mares vet bills have sailed over her insurance limit which will take me a few months to get paid off... or an interest free credit card
Can you REALLY afford your horse(s)?

I can afford my horse but only because she sits higher in my priorities than things like socialising, buying clothes, treating myself etc.
She doesn't go without for anything but there are things I would do differently if I had more money - buying new rugs instead of second hand off ebay for example.
I think there is a big problem in the equestrian industry that there is a perception that horses have to cost a lot of money and if you aren't able to afford the best of everything you are being cruel or selfish. My view is that as long as my horse is healthy, warm, well fed and happy she doesn't need tons of fancy kit and expensive supplements. I do wish horse insurance was cheaper though - mine is more expensive than my car insurance!

No i very much doubt i could afford my two if i kept them at a livery yard and had to pay for everything.
Maybe could afford to keep one, if i could keep a horse with £250 a month?
But i am very lucky in that B keeps them along with the other 7 on private land so no livery costs. In process of building a lovely new stable block too!!

What do you class as debt? Having a loan, credit card or being in an overdraft, can't pay it back etc?
I did take out a loan to buy Oreon, and was worried about it, but he's been the best thing for me so can't say its a bad thing but i don't class that as debt as i am paying it back as i can afford to and worked it all out thoroughly beforehand. And if i couldn't have coped with it then, i wouldn't have done it.
I only see debt as when you can't pay it back.

Yes, I took out a small loan over one year to buy her!!

No, I would but only if I felt she wasn't getting enough attention, money dosn't come into it.

No. There;s always things to pay out for, my horse can cost me anything from £50 to £300 per month, there must always be enough money for the horse whatever comes up. If I had to rely on money from a sharer I'd be panicking.

I can afford my horses but sometimes stupid things happen that i really shouldnt let happen, eg- ran out of older horses feed who is prone to loosing weight and the only mix i had about to feed him was slim and healthy mix lol and he will have to be on that until i get paid tomorro......

Whether you can pay it back or not doesnt class it as debt, borrowing it in the first place puts you in debt.
