Adverts like this make me so sad. There should be a law against selling an elderly animal that should have a restful retirement or PTS. I have a 21 year old and a 29 year old that I would never part with. Just sad.

a kids pony could have many more years showing new kids the ropes. My rising 24 year old still gets ridden 4 days a week but will retire when she needs to. Unless there is more to this ad not quoted I don’t think you can assume it’s down to the owner not wanting to pay for retirement/pts, pony may be sound but outgrown.

A 25yo Welsh C sounds like the sort of pony the OP on the ‘first pony’ thread would love. Seen the world, super experienced, happy to do a bit of everything while looking after a child, no longer wanting to rush everywhere.

And so will every dodgy dealer who will "lose" the passport and 10 to 15yrs of the ponies life when they sell him/her on.

I know of a 12hh pony who retired from Pony Club work sound at least 38 years old. This pony could have more years left in her than most 10 year old horses. The pony I'm referring to was loaned not sold, but maybe the owners don't have that luxury.

Totally, my daughters riding school has a 33yr old pony who is in amazing shape (he won showing at Olympia at Christmas, he was in H&H!) He still teaches the little ones the ropes and shows no sign of stopping! Ponies do go on forever if they are well looked after!

Definitely if you don't have your own place livery is the only option for a lot of people, I'd not be able to afford retirement livery and livery for a working horse so can totally understand people selling older ponies if they are a still fit and well

"look at my pretty full clipped yearling, head and all!" Said baby had had colic investigations that required clipping patches off as coat was too thick and the owner "couldn't bear for him to look like that". I'd understand a tidy up but literally no reason to clip EVERYTHING off!

There in lies the problem though if you sell them at that age you have no control over how they are cared for and after looking after their riders for many years they deserve a happy retirement. I find it really sad that an owner of an old horse has to sell, I hope I never find myself in that position.

I agree, although I can't say I've ever seen horses 30yrs plus for sale, 20s yes x

Ballsy kid sought for competition loan of a talented young pony - with aim to BSJA. Owner will even take to the comps! Sounds amazing!

Only there’s the small matter of said pony being too terrified to ride (let alone jump) and needing re-backing first. But it’s good to tack up so that’s ok. Anyone want to volunteer their child?

I nominate a large portion of the 'horses under 1000' page on FB. Although some of it's pretty sad actually.

It’s a great place to pick up a feral pony to back or for small youngstock. In amongst that are the ads for the ponies who ended up in the wrong homes - some very honest ads. I have always had success buying from there, and have some lovely ponies currently who we could only afford because they arrived feral and uncatchable, or with another issue that was fixable. All came from really lovely owners, nice honest people. You do need to have your eyes wide open though!

Looking for my next forever horse. I have very picky needs.

Must be:
Filly
From 6 months - 2 year old.
preferably black but will consider bay or palomino.
Needs to have a little bit of sass and be flashy as I want to show and produce.
Close to north east as possible. (will not buy unseen.)
Dont mind unhandled.
Budget Low low four fig

yeah, seems reasonable?

Looking for a new ? is my Welsh sec b

ABOUT xxxx

she is 12/13 yr old mare with an attitude problem the size of Big Ben.

Xxxx will be sold straight from the field, she hasn’t had anything done with her work wise for over a yr because of her crazy ways.
My daughter used to ride her until she became dangerous for her. Xxxx has always been a tad crazy but progressively got worse.
She bucks and kicks her rider off then springs bk to kick her grounded passenger.
Vet check couldn’t find any health issues so we arnt sure why she is like she is.

We don’t have the time to put into her due to other horsey commitments and my only other option is pts but I know there is some wonderful horse ppl out there that could help her.

She doesn’t like her bk legs touching by strangers/farriers but with time and patience and consistency she will come round.
She is barefoot and has been for the time I’ve had her and before that with her previous owners.

I have some previous history which isn’t the best, but will be disclosed to the right person for our girl.

Xxxx is good to catch and lead round but cannot be ridden so needs a home where she can be a much loved lawnmower.

Xxxc currently lives in a herd and lives out 24/7 but is far from happy as she keeps attacking the other horses and more so since our old girl past a couple of weeks ago.

I don’t want to let her go but either she or 1 of the other horses is going to get seriously hurt and I can’t do that to her or the herd.

I’m trying to be as honest as I can and I really don’t want any negative comments as this is heartbreaking enough.

She will stand and be tied all day long and loves a fuss and a brush.
But likes to buck and be sassy when lunged ?

Xxxx will suit an only horse home with NO small children as she may kick if that way out and I would hate that to happen.
Xxxx will only go to a knowledgeable experienced home and home checks will be done.

We love her but what’s best for her is not us unfortunately.

I have been as honest as I can
Be and will require the right person for xxxx to sign a disclosure to say they are aware of her issues

Which is great for people who know what they're doing and will do right by the ponies/horses they pick up. I just hope they find themselves in these good homes not people just looking for a cheap horse with no idea/desire to put in what these young/feral ones need.

Historically they went through the sales, sometimes picking up diseases as they went, with the trauma of the sales ring to add in to it. Ended up in the same sort of homes, just less visible to Jo Public. My latest arrival would have gone for meat - no recorded breeding, little handling, lame behind. As it is, his owner could advertise on Facebook and he found us. Completely sound now, handled and is walking out in-hand to meet traffic etc with tack on. He is proving to be beautifully behaved out and about, and with some more work will make an amazing family pony - really sweet and kind.

I saw this and honestly, if I wasn’t in the situation I’m in with my ankle, I’d buy it just to give it a good home.

So it’s cheeky rather than ridiculous but they are asking for the perfect horse that jumps 1m+, hunts, behaves, is the ideal height and ideal age, and so is probably worth £10k or so. Are people loaning horses like this at the moment?
More than 10k atm. These do make me laugh. We’d all like that type of horse on loan.

Not seen an ad. with "no livery" before. That's going to weed out a lot of buyers...

She is not for a complete novice rider .She loves a cuddle. No livery yards.
A home with a stable to keep her cosy.

(HQ 302864)

Thats pathetic cuddles and cosy fgs it's a horse not a baby 😂

I saw one recently, a girl selling her 'school master horse' at the age of 5, conditions of sale.. He must stay on current yard or one within a 5 mile radius so she can visit weekly to check he is okay. Also in the conditions of her sale she is allowed to turn up at any point for a ride as he is her baby and she loves him dearly.
When asked if it was a loan rather than sale she stated it is definitely a sale, £6,000 for the darling horse she has to sell him as he is too good for her (she prefers a challenge), but she wants to visit weekly for lessons with her instructor.

I am sure he is never going to sell if she is serious!
If that was me, saying I bought the horse, I would turn up when she was gone one day and piss the hell off, who does she think she is?

These posts are ten a penny. People just have no idea of how hard people work to either buy those horses or produce them. Yet they expect a horse like that free
