well ive had a show pony in full work at 28, ive has a section B live to be 38, my current welch C is 22 and i expect i’ll get another 10 years from him baring any catastrophic illness like colic.

But they Are ponies and they tend to live longer than the bigger horse in general I find.

23 is a great age for any horse. Heartbreakingly young is under 11.

Most horses I had known prior to her made it into their late twenties - 23 just seems like no time at all. She was only 15hh and her 15hh-15.2hh buddies lived a lot longer and were still in work at the age she died. Perhaps I have just known a bunch of super long lived horses. Do most horses really die in their early twenties?

There was a thread a while back on ages people had lost horses. So many had died young for one reason or another.

I lost Gray in April 2022 due to a field accident at the age of 19yo. I did not expect him to see his 22nd birthday not because he was a retired racehorse but because he was grey and had melanomas. Without those he was a very tough, Hardy, robust American bred tb who grew a coat like a shetland and once recovered from his tendon injury he never had a days lameness in the 10 years I had him with the exception of a hoof abcess - which, of course, meant he was dying and had a broken leg and couldn't possibly do anything else but lay down, wave the offending foot in the air and theatrically wait to die 🙄 20mins later after popping the abcess and applying a poultice he was back up chasing the Shetlands around 🙄😂🤣😂

This one specifies a 4-fig budget. Ok s/he is quite funny but so is asking for a really good big well behaved showjumper for less than 10k.

This one is quite funny because it reads like those ads that list out the perfect horse that everybody wants and says something at the end like, "don't want a worldbeater, just a solid all-rounder" for a mid 4 fig budget - except, this person does want a worldbeater!

People are nuts. Sometimes I wonder if a thread was started on here that stated -

Did you post a wanted advert for unicorn but you only had 50p and a bale of hay as a budget but somehow you purchased Valegro?

if anyone would actually reply? I really want to know if people get lucky 🤣

A friend bought a sweet 5 yo gelding for £1700 3 years ago. DC at 2* last season. Stepping up to 3* this! Does that count!

There is of course a story behind that though. The horse failed a vetting for what looked like trivial reasons. But he was weedy, lacked prescence, not well bred and the dealer just wanted rid. She took a punt and boy did it pay off. Sound as a pound. Scope to burn. Lovely temperament. So yes she got very very lucky.

That ad reads like one’s done by agents looking for really rich families. Usually ending with ‘substantial budget for right horse’. This buyer is dreaming.

Isn’t 2* 1m 15 though? And presumably your friend brought that horse on themselves, so no proven record at 5yo.

The advertiser says 5yo+ yet specifies 1m40 as a height - what horses are jumping 1m40 courses at 5? Anything rising 5 now was 4 last year - jumping 1.10m in age classes, and even at 7 the age class is only 1.35m. So she needs an 8 year or over. So her age requirement is actually 8-10yo and she obviously wants a horse capable of placing because she has a ‘record’ up to 1m35. That’s a horse worth well over £10k!!

Oh I totally agree! Ad is bonkers. She needs 25k for what she wants.

Not that many straightforward horses are capable of consistent DCs at 2* with plenty of scope for more. He will be worth a fortune now. But I agree her situation is nothing like the ad. She took a punt on a horse she felt had potential. And brought that potential out. But she still got lucky as a nicely put together 5 year old who is easy to ride with a lot of scope, a bold attitude and nice paces was worth a lot more than £1700 3 years ago.

And even the top of her budget, £9999.99 is still nowhere near enough for the horse she describes.
Sorry, I misunderstood your post. I thought you were saying that £10k is the going rate for that sort of horse and wanting one for less was cheeky.
That type of horse is way out of my league in terms of both price and talent so I dont know the real going rates.

Oh, no offence! No, I meant her budget is nowhere close but like you, that isn’t my field and I don’t know going rates but I’d imagine it’s twice that or more. X

We have just advertised 2 horses. Now granted I didn't put the location on the post but come on! It takes 2 seconds to Google where we are! I gave up putting the location on the top of the ads as most people ignored it anyway. The number of people who have messaged and asked where we are and how much the horses are (this was written at the top of the ad!) Is unreal! People don't read adverts anymore they just read the relevant bit about the horse and ignore the rest.

My experience, with some of my work colleagues, is that people don't bother to read anything any more! They look at the pictures and make a guess (usually incorrectly) at the rest!

That doesn’t count 😜🤣. Your friend put the graft in and FairPlay to them 😊

"To move yards.
Looking to temporarily put my mare out on loan whilst away travelling.
She can just stay sat in the field, so will only consider the right person!

No price, but to cover all costs incurred during the time frame."

.....

So they want someone to pay for the upkeep of their horse for three months whilst they go travelling, then take them back. What a great deal...🙃

"Looking for heavy carrier, 15hh plus, no novices and “first-horse” friendly. No cobs though

If anyone on here is delusional enough to be selling a safe weight carrier for 1k, let me know. I'll have bought it off you by the evening.
