WANTED pony suitable for 3 yr old

MUST be half dead and bombproof for the child to actually handle lead and groom (under adult supervision obviously ) and ride

Must be good to catch etc

Pref No bigger than 11.2hh

Pony will have the most loving home with a very good friend of mine living on a private stud yard

PREF loan potentially LWVTB

Please let me know if you know anything 💕

Pony will be housed in Xxxx

What’s wrong with that?
I’ve known plenty of little aged ponies do the loan rounds for toddlers

It was the 'half dead' bit that upset me. I thought it was asking a lot for a loan pony, but I'm happy to be wrong.
it is quite normal for a tiny tots pony. They other one you may hear is "dead from the neck up" just means a been there, done that, probably edging on retirement pony that wont spook at anything.

horse insurance question please help 🙌

I have just received a quote from the vets for laser sarcoid removal at 1.3k…bank cannot afford… it’s a very angry sarcoid and can imagine its painful and it needs to be gone before the flies arrive.

(I have already tried: banding/supplements/thuja cream) laser is the best option (no liverpool cream as it’s near an artery)

horse isn’t insured currently

if i were to insure say “tonight” can i ring them up tomorrow and file a claim so i can get this sarcoid fixed?

or will i have to wait to file a claim? what’s the process?

horse is a weatherbys passport so insurance is VERY expensive (why i’ve not done it yet)

if you recommend easy going/cheap/reliable insurance please let me know!

thanks

Umm that’s not how insurance works

I've just seen a video on FB of a very small child (young toddler), strapped into a basket saddle, being led by a rider on another pony. The child is not wearing a hat, apparently because if a hat is put on his head he screams and throws it off. OP states that it's all fine because the child's mother is walking behind and the lead horse 'won't kick'.
And what if the lead horse does kick?
What if the basket saddle slips?
What if the tiny horse slips?
What if something else goes wrong?

Following the tragic news of the teenager who died after a kick to the head, I'm staggered by just how stupid some people can be.

Haha and now their name is out there for an insurance fraud claim. What. A. Muppet.

I actually would quite like a non riding share, but the ads for them always seem like they are by people who have less of a clue than me. Which is a low bar. Especially when it comes to young horses!
Where are you? I have a lovely 15 yr old non ridden pony (plus a 27 yr old retired 16.2 & a 14hh riding pony). My 15 yr old would love to have someone special to her.

Believe it or not, people turn up to view small ponies without hats for their children too!

I saw that post as well. Didn't bother looking at the video or reading the post. Lots of people seem to think helmets are optional for small children whether that be horse riding, bicycles, scooters or all these new fangled electric kiddy cars, all of which can reach high speeds and cause serious damage if a child comes off.

My mum always made it a condition of riding: no hat, no riding, no horse. I am doing the same for my nephew (who went through a phase of shrieking when a hat was put on his head) and niece.

Generally this person has a good reputation locally however I found this a bit cheeky

Would anyone be keen on an opportunity to help on the yard a few days a week, hack out and learn on a professional schooling / sales yard?
⭐️

Is there is anyone out there who is wanting the opportunity to be around quality horses , learn and assist with the younger and older horses from the ground.
Hacking and lunging for those capable maybe even schooling as well!
An opportunity to come to shows and watch during the week as well as weekends. We also go to stay away shows and compete nationally and internationally.
You will meet new people and add experience to your CV.
Perfect for someone who wants to gain more knowledge, doesn't have the opportunity of having their own competition horses but wants to be involved in the sport as well as the sales and schooling that takes place back at home.
This is not a paid position, it's purely a ' I'll scratch your back if you scratch mine'
I already have freelancers who are qualified and experienced but I'm looking for someone who wants to 'work' alongside me, have fun and gain experience at the same time.
In return for your support , I will support you with any practical / theory based knowledge you require and/or lack.
If you can ride , there will be further opportunities to bring on young horses and compete in the ring should you wish. If you're not yet experienced enough to ride the horses here, we are happy to train you if that's something of interest.
The opportunities are endless for the right person but the person I'm looking for must be happy to also muck in with the day to day jobs alongside myself and be driven and motivated as well as having common sense. We can teach the rest!
Our horses want for nothing , you will have the opportunity to meet some wonderful people within the industry and you'd be welcome to be here when we have professionals to visit such as Roy Midwood , physio / farrier / vets / saddle fitters / nutritionists etc giving you even more of an opportunity to learn from different fields within the same field.
The opportunity to network at shows , we go to high profile shows as well as local events. You will have the chance to meet people within the equine community which may widen your circle for future growth and opportunities
We want you to succeed and will encourage you to do so.
Ideally looking for someone who is available in the week as well as weekends , I don't mind how many days / hours you want to do. Flexible

I don’t have as much of a problem with this if it was a horse mad teenager that could go on weekends.
If they really did help that person learn and let them ride I think it’s a good deal.
The bit in the week sounds a bit off though.
If it’s just an unpaid dogsbody though that’s unfair.

We have tried to gauge interest in both mares going together with zero interest,

Hopefully someone can take the chestnut mare that will have a new friend for her as she is joined at her sisters hip, we would
Of loved both going together but there isn’t any interest unfortunately.

10 years old 16,2 by national hunt sire Flemensfirth.
She is a typical chestnut mare and can put her ears back. She has had one previous foal. No injuries, sound and healthy.

Project to ride under saddle again after a few years of doing nothing or broodmare.

Her sister is available also, we will have her under saddle next week, she will make a nice riding horse.

Transport available

Who would want to buy two bonded mares as riding horses? Sounds like an utter nightmare. Looking at the photos I would particularly want either of them as broodmares either.

In my area this type of position would be advertised as a modern apprenticeship. Young people get £7.55 an hour and are supposed to receive training alongside working, yards still struggle to get someone who can turn up. Freelancers are also difficult to come by unless you're very flexible with times / dates and are close to another customer so I can't imagine round here you'd get someone to work for free.

I did something similar in my twenties. Went 1 day a week to a local dealers, mucked out a couple in the morning then rode whatever needed riding, occasionally got a lesson or taken out for a schooling trip or beach trip in the lorry. Had a whale of a time!

I did something like that in my 40s! But I wouldn't have had the opportunity to ride pi-pa, piris, 1 time changes etc if I'd been huffy about doing the mucking out for free.

Same! I had the opportunity to ride horses I never would otherwise, including youngsters who went on to be 5* event horses. I love all the looking after them bits and groundwork and hacking though.

I love these posts. I work in insurance and if people don’t think that insurance companies aren’t all over social media like a rash when needed 🫠😂 also does it not occur to them that in the paperwork the vet will give the history… so they’ll have paid a premium and still not be covered, and invalidate their cover.

All the go fund mes make me sad. Someone on my yard suggested she would do one for my colic surgery which is on credit cards, bless her and I was like I actually couldn’t, at the end of the day I took the risk not insuring him. Especially when I see them asking for £15k + for a very valuable, competing horse’s vet stay, like you afforded the horse, you compete the horse and keep it in a yard and wear all the designer gear…. At least I look homeless and only put myself into debt 😏😂

Many of us “older” people will have learnt our skills through this type of experience. In the days before everyone became litigation conscious it was common to help at yards, you gained valuable experience and often had opportunities that can only be gained now by paying £££s. As long as everything is in place l see no reason why it can’t continue.

I suspect it can't continue because it's no longer legal or insurable. And that's probably because of excess litigation and of exploitation of young people. Whether it's a change for good or bad is up for debate I think. Yes a lot of valubale opportunities are no longer possible BUT also I was able to do crazy things as a kid which were fun but definitely not safe, and I suspect unpaid labour led to some sgnificant abuses of young people's desperation to ride or be around horses.

Are working pupil roles no longer around? If they are genuinely offering training, then there should be a scheme whereby they can. But with some transparency about what training you get for your labour.

You can train under the modern apprenticeship scheme in a whole range of things including equestrianism. My niece does childcare. You are supposed to be training for at least 20% of the time and get paid for your work, there's a minimum rate which is not necessarily as much as the nmw. Haddon training have courses which support this, as an alternative to bhs qualifications.

I applied for a working pupil position decades ago. The working week was 60 hours, this was all work. Outside of your scheduled hours you could join the regular riding school lessons if there were any running at a convenient time when you had finished working and if you weren't physically exhausted. The pay at the time was a less than you got on benefits and the working hours meant you couldn't top it up with bar work or waitressing. This would be illegal now both the working hours and the low wages. There are also specific rules about how many hours school children (under 16's) can work, even if they say it's unpaid or voluntary.

Back in the 80’s I was a working pupil. 6 days a week.1 weekend off a month. £6.50 a week with a very draughty cold cottage provided. Daily lessons both ridden and stable management and plenty of hacking. It was hard work but I learnt so much. Exams paid by the yard. I can honestly say best 2 years of my life lol. Oh in winter hot chocolate and custard creams provided on both breaks

Hmmm hot chocolate and custard creams 😀 how many yards would provide them now? The living conditions on some yards were less than desirable whilst others were quite amazing! Yes we live in different times some things have improved massively others not so much.
