Unfortunately I agree hard work may get you some things grifting, inheritance, luck, lack of scruples and not paying taxes will get you more.

If someone told little me she could have a pony in every colour and lovely stables a horsebox etc. of course you would want that. It's the parents job to understand the actual responsibility, cost and effect on your child of displaying them to the public like this.
 
Well speaking for myself I'd rather build a modest life for myself with my own work and my own effort....I don't think money is the be all and end all to everything nor a flashy barn, big house etc.
Like one day I will have a little bit of land for myself and I will own a mule and a proper outbuilding for my fishes and I will do it myself with money I have saved up. None of this scrounging off others with sob stories
 
The more I thik about this the more I struggle to understand why people are paying. Olaf made more sense! MD was genuinely at risk of losing him.

Here is family where the child has multiple decent ponies out competing successfully. They also have a quality stallion busily making lots of money for them every year. Look at that life and it looks pretty good. I am sure they do work hard - I'd bloody hope so if they have enough money to run multiple ponies for a young child.

But it's not enough. They want her to have her own 'Dream Yard'. At her age! And - gasp - if she can't have that yard ALL THE PONIES HAVE TO BE SOLD to fund it. Oh no!! That woulld be terrible. Must crowd fund to give her this ludicrous luxury. Or, you know, just have them where they currently on on a normal yard like the rest of the world.

Presumably almost everyone donating would like a dream house or a dream yard. I've designed my 'Dream Yard' in my had a thousand times! So I just can't see how people read that and think hang on why does she need a 'dream yard' rather than: I must encourage a child to chase her dreams. Bonkers.

We had one on our yard which had seriously bad feet, one which pretty much almost made him unrideable, he was badly mannered and by the owners own admission not particularly talented in anything, including very basic schooling at 7. He didn't keep weight, albeit was big, and was just a tricky horse to manage/keep in work. Pretty, but not progeny I would laud...

Haven't we all dreamed of our dream house, yard etc etc. The thing that screams to me is that they are taking a child our of a livery yard (I'm assuming) environment into her own 'dream yard' therefore taking her away from her horsey friendship group. It's a lonely place for a kid on a sole use yard with only adults/parents for company.

Also how much are they expecting to get built for £30k ? they've bought a bit of land I'm assuming they want an arena big enough for jumping in, stables etc. And they'll need planning for all of this.

We’ve already purchased the land and are ready to get started but this will enable us to get started on the yard building work immediately and hit the ground running so to speak. I think you're giving them too much credit re: this having anything to do with I rather than about serving their own ambitions.

I actually thought that it's very probably *their* dream yard.

I think they've said that they've 'grafted' (ahem) 'every step of the way', having started since before Ivy was born.

There's a strong vibe that they're using their daughter to persuade people to fund a yard that will become a major financial asset to them.

And yes, forget a dream yard, I'd be happy with a small area of hardstanding right now. Very few of us are lucky enough to have our 'dream' setup, but most of us realise that we're lucky to have what we do have because owning horses is a privilege.

An ex friend who I occasionaly here of had a young colt. Shes a pro and he was so sharp and reactive she gelded him, made no difference so he was sold. He didnt appear to have the talent to compenstate for the issues he had

This one doesnt bother me. They arent sharing it or begging. People who follow asked to dontate so they made this. Will I donante? HELL NO! But if people want to the GFM is very clear that they dont need the money. If people are daft enough to donate then thats fair enough. Parasocial relationships can be very strong. People get a lot from watching her and want to feel invovled. It makes them feel good to donate.

I have zero issues with GFMs like this. They are clear with the background and intent and it hasnt been shared around begging with a sob story, its very transparent.

Sounds the spitting image of this one - they bought direct from stud so wouldn't be the same horse, but he was gelded and ultimately he was a large part of the reason they were asked to leave the yard, as it wasn't safe for the YO to deal with.

Unfortunately this just isn’t true. There are those of us who have worked our backsides off since leaving school (I worked all through my degree aswell- plus had 3 horses at the time) regularly do 6 day weeks, and still barely scrape by at the end of the month.

There’s really no incentive to work hard in this country.

Have you seen the associated Instagram post tho? It is emotionally manipulative in a way the GFM isn't.

Agreed!

Although people have to be free to do whatever they like with their money, I do worry about the extent to which GFM/Just Giving is becoming increasingly common, particularly for people who are basically privileged and not in desperate need at all. I don't like the way it's all normalised. Not that there's anything I can do about it, I just don't like it at all.
 
If I can throw my hat in the ring for crowdfunding, you can all have a % of Sadies value (whats 1% of zero???) and if you come visit she will give you a kiss for a grass nut. I only need a tenth of what this lot are asking for 😂

Yes, they are entitled to ask but we are all also entitled to think its gross.

Has anyone seen the video with the lady showing pics of her (pretty standard for the time of year) fields and her last round bale of hay - talking about how she usually pays in arrears but now her hay supplier has run out and she needs to pay this year’s prices at point of purchase. So she might have to sell all her horses.

Lots of people sweetly offering to help. I dunno. Mixed feelings.

I have eight in my field now, 2 at a friend’s because she has plenty of grass. I have taken on extra work this month to pay the hay bill. I have also carefully rationed the grass we did have so we have some left now, when the prices are highest, to mitigate the cost.

All around me is livestock living out when they would normally be in. Everyone is struggling. Everyone is paying those prices. Those who cannot are selling - there was nothing and now there are so many ads I lose ones I wanted to find again in seconds. They’re selling the young, the small, loaning out companions, cutting back.

I feel bad for her, but at the same time - everyone is staring down the same barrel. Her supplier would have warned her they didn’t have enough to last the winter. Sell one or two, loan them out, get a sharer, poo pick for a local yard, something. We all had plenty of time to plan. If no one made any plans, how would that work?

Many years ago, I did actually request haylage as my Christmas present. I got it too. It may have been the same winter that I got a wheelbarrow for my birthday (February). I was chuffed with both. I hate receiving tat.

Field looked pretty good 😅. If you decided to keep 6 horses throughout the winter it wasn’t hard to know you’d have to budget for increased forage prices 🤷‍♀️
