Clipping? Do your own?

I don't have clippers these days, its easier to get local clipping chum in every 2 months from the end of Sept to do the 3 clips I have. End Sept is usually chaser clip at front and finishes under stomach so can still be rugless. End Nov prob a blanket clip, end Jan all off leaving legs and front of face on.
The 2 tinies will have gullet and belly off at the end of this month before they get too woolly for standard clippers!

I usually do a chaser clip for the first one and then full clips later on in the year but depends on workload and weather

I clip my own horse and I quite like doing it

I like clipping, just hate the hair! I do neck shoulders and half face on my pony ( sort of half a blanket clip) and low trace on my horse. I have a designated 'clipping hoodie and manky jods' which spends its whole life in a plastic bag apart from clipping time. I get some funny looks but if I don't wear safety goggles too I always get an eye infection. The goggles serve me well!

I'm planning to do our hairy pair this year. Probably just taking Morgans neck and belly off and a blanket on the mare. But l wait and see what the weather is like and how they behave first!

I used to clip my own but now I use a professional who does a much better job than I would. she's so much quicker and much more pernickety. I have a full clip including ears but not legs as my horse is quite fine. I still have working clippers but they are now quite elderly.

I would do my own but I can't be bothered clipping them just for the sake of it!

I do nearly 250 clips a year at work. I actually quite like clipping but I can't be bothered doing the faffy clips - all off! Half head and legs left on but the rest is gone! Whoosh! I can strip a TB out in 30-40mins if it stands or is doped!

I put on overalls and do my own, much too money conscious to pay someone to do something I can do myself. The first two clips of the season are blanket clips leaving the head on, then finally when the coats start to change I clip my mare out leaving her legs and the front of her face, my gelding I take the lot off including the legs but leave the front of the face. That way they look good for the early shows when they start in about a months time.

I do my own - can usually get away with one, sometimes two. I like a blanket - pony is sweaty with anything less but I worry about him getting rubs with a full clip as is prone.

Now if anyone can tell me how to avoid the dreaded clipping track marks I’d be very grateful- is there something about a grey horse that makes them worse?!

I have a cob who needs doing every 4 - 6 weeks. I'd be bankrupt if I didn't do my own. Yes the hair gets everywhere - I have a dedicated set of clipping clothes right down to the underwear. Those daft overalls really do not stand up to proper clipping. But the ISH, Connie etc are all dreams in comparison - the hair is so soft and they last months!!

We do a low chaser clip. Can modify according to sweat levels (i.e. take more off if needed!). Only the Shetland gets clipped, and she lives out so can't clip too much off beyond the bib and belly area as she won't wear a rug. And yes, we do our own. Battery operated clippers - can do it at the field and not have to sweep away the hair!!!

Provided you don't live in Shetland, you can clip a surprisingly large area of hair off one before they start to feel the cold.

I cracked last year and got my own clippers. Mine are cordless and brilliant so I don’t regret it! At £50 a pop for full plus half head and legs, and two ponies needing at least 2 clips each a year, the clippers have nearly paid for themselves already after just one year! I was a bit nervous about doing it myself but actually I don’t mind it too much, both are very good to clip, and it’s quite satisfying when it’s all gone. My life is easier because I don’t have any lines, I’ve never tried anything other than it all off, I’m sure clipping a trace/blanket is much harder!

I think it’s definitely the enthusiasm of a novice because I’ve only been let loose on my share horse for 2 years but I LOVE clipping! I find it ever so satisfying.

They both get a sort of modified hunter/blanket clip - head and legs left on and a saddlecloth type patch.

I used to have a very unflattering shell suit to clip in, where most of the hair stayed off my skin.
I do my own, it was getting someone to comb when a very hairy pony was dry enough to clip that started me with £30 clippers.
I then bought some clippers from a friend when I bought her hairy pony which was clipped in summer as well.
I now clip my dog. A dog groomer made him so sore and it was a mess as well. Mine is doggy clip is ragged but effective and I can give him breaks so now he quite likes it. He also doesn’t smell of cheap shampoo. I have already ‘paid ‘ for the clippers in haircuts.

I have an old pair, a friend said they werent working and gave me them, she had a new pair , my hubby is an electrician so i took them home and he opened them and it was clogged with hair 😂😂 ive used them now for 4 years on several horses 🤷🏼‍♀️ So i offered her some money for them since they were ok, after some persuasion she took £20 lol..
